San Antonio Spurs

They are the DEFENDING NBA CHAMPS!

You can't take that away from a team. That proves they are STILL the team to beat in the NBA. Here is what their stats look like, so far this season:

97.9 Points Per Game - 3rd In Division
88.3 Defending Team's PPG - 1st In Division

3 Of their players average OVER 17 Points Per Game, and 1 of them is on their bench, (Manu Ginobili).

Alright, now, I don't want anyone to get excited about their win over the Spurs, it was only by what? 6 points... Is that much at all? No, I could make that myself in 2 shots, with people my size. So, I don't think that game proves the Rockets are better.

Also, the Spurs are a team of Stars, that WORK WELL together, and it has shown. 2003, 2005, and 2007 NBA Champs, isn't that somethin' else? I think it is very good.

However, we are talking about who the best team is now, and they are looking pretty good in their conference, and don't have the easiest schedule, yet not the hardest either. This year, you know this team will do good, because they play consistent, and other NBA coaches and Teams know what they can do, since they pick off Teams in the Playoffs A LOT.

You're Up

This division is crazy-good right now. The Mavs, Spurs, Rockets, and Hornets are all teams that look capable of going far in the playoffs this year. However, I think the strongest team in the division is the Houston Rockets.

Looking to the future, I believe the Rockets can keep up the pace they're on right now. Yao and McGrady and finally both healthy at the same time and are looking great out there. T-Mac (an MVP candidate) is averaging 27 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 steal per game. He is doing everything he can out there. Ming Yao, on the other hand, is averaging 24 points to go along with his 10 rebounds a game.

They beat the Spurs this year by a score of 89-81. They also embarrassed the Bucks and handed losses to the Lakers and Jazz (both of which made the playoffs last year).

Now, a good barometer I like to use to give somewhat of an inkling as to how good the chemistry is on a team is the percentage of baskets that were assisted. You said the Spurs have great teamwork and 56% of their field goals are assisted and 54% of their opponents' are. Houston has 62% of theirs are assisted and 54% of their opponents. Is the Spurs' teamwork overrated maybe?

How can you even ask if their teamwork is overrated? That is insanity, unless their 2003, 2005, and 2007 Championships were all flukes, or overrated. You can't be overrated, to win championships, unless the teams you play are weak, and the Pistons are not weak, The Suns, Mavs, and Lakers are not weak. The Jazz are not weak, how could their teamwork be overrated?

My main problem with the Rockets, is Tracy McGrady. He HAS been Injury-Prone. I don't know how much more that can be stressed. If he goes down this year, they are in some trouble. At the beginning of the Season though, everyone is playing for the NBA MVP. The race is wide opened, everyone is a contendor right now. So, I don't see how saying he is an MVP Contendor helps you, because so is, Tony Parker, and others that lead their teams right now. I think that is too early to call right now.

Here are the Standings as of now, to give the voters a Head's Up:

Spurs (7-1)
Rockets (6-2)
Hornets (6-2)
Mavericks (5-2)
Grizzlies (2-4)

Spurs Offense/Defense:

Offense - 15th
Defense - 3rd

Rockets Offense/Defense

Offense - 19th
Defense - 7th

The San Antonio Spurs are still the team to beat right now, too.

I didn't exactly say they were overrated. I just showed the stats and let you decide if maybe they aren't as cohesive as everyone thought. Most basketball staticians would agree that the percent of field goals that were assisted is a pretty good measuring stick of how good of ball movement a team has. That's all I was saying. I never said they didn't work well together or anything of that sort.

With your Tracy McGrady argument you're looking into the future. The topic is "Which Team Is The Best In The Southwest Division?" What happens later in the season does not matter. It is RIGHT NOW we are talking about. Besides that, the only way the Rockets fall into 4th or 5th place in the division is if T-Mac AND Yao both go down. Also, I don't think many people realize that Tracy played 71 GAMES last season.

How can you say everyone is a contender for MVP right now? Is Ben Wallace a contender? Is Nazr Mohammed a contender? I think you get the point. In the most recent Race to the MVP on NBA.com T-Mac is 3rd. (Note: Duncan is 7th while KG takes 1st.) If we had this discussion three weeks ago you would be completely right but we didn't so you're not.

Rockets beat Spurs by 8, not 6.

Overrated means that a team is not for real, or they have yet to face a tough challenge to prove their strength. The San Antonio Spurs are nowhere near overrated. In the playoffs, they face MANY tough opponents, since they are on the tougher conference in the NBA. If they were just dominating the other conference with the Pacers and Hawks, then I would claim them overrated, but they are in no way overrated.

Right now, the San Antonio Spurs are the same team they were last year, and last year they dominated throughout the season and the Championship. If anything, they only lost minor players. I don't think that will damage them, like it does to others.

Now, back to that rant from me where I said anyone is up for MVP right now. I meant that anyone, EARLY this season can come off the bench and start playing very well. There could be a nobody that starts playing like a BIG time all-star, so you can't tell if anyone will come out from the shadows. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes there are those people that choose to step up their game and contribute well.

My problem is that I don't think the Rockets have the depth in their team, to keep beating the Spurs.

2 Points

To clarify your overrated argument: you meant just their teamwork, not the entire team I suppose. All I was saying about their teamwork was with the stats given, which weren't much, it does seem that the Spurs didn't work with such fluidity as people thought.

I wouldn't say they dominated in the regular season. They came in second in their division behind the Mavs. Yes, they were good but definitely not dominant. Are they the same as they were last year? I don't know. This year, they're outscoring their opponents 99-91 (+8). Last year's regular season, they outscored them 99-90 (+9, slightly better) and outscored them 96-92 (+4) in the playoffs, which is against good teams. Now, it wouldn't be fair unless I averaged only last year's playoff opponents from this year's schedule. They've only outscored their worthy opponents by a score of 92-91 (+1). So are they really the same? Somewhat, but not as much as you're making it out to be.

Now, the Spurs recently were dominated by the Mavs, 105-92. (Their worst loss of the season.) The Rockets' worst loss was also to Dallas but only by 9 points.

Also, tonight at 7PM eastern time Houston and the Spurs will face off on ESPN.

The Spurs are defending champs. You can't argue against that.

Rosco, I am ready to unload on you. Haha, I just don't have time right now. Get ready for my rebuttal...

November 14, 2007  05:58 PM ET

Bring it on, I am ready to be amazed on how you say an injury prone team is better than the World Champions...

November 14, 2007  06:29 PM ET

I'll start by pointing out that you took what I said out of context which you did do if you read over my argument about teamwork. Never ONCE did I say the Spurs teamwork is overrated. You possibly could have inferred that from what I said but inferences do not count. Also, I have something good regarding MVP contenders.

November 15, 2007  03:37 PM ET

"Is the Spurs' teamwork overrated maybe?"

I read it how it was. I don't know what else I would have said, I can't take in the fact that you ask that, lol.

November 15, 2007  04:24 PM ET

I'm holding it all in right now. Hehe. My argument will be presented shortly.

November 15, 2007  07:25 PM ET

HOLD UP! It went from the Spurs' teamwork MAYBE being overrated to their teamwork BEING overrated to the Spurs in general being overrated? That's ridiculous. I wasn't at all saying they were overrated last year. Where did you get that from?
