Right now LSU is No.1 in the country and in the BCS. They are the odd on favorite to win the National Championship.

But there's one thing that could derailed their chances.

The Michigan job.

Reports are that Lloyd Carr will not be back as head coach next year. The most logical to replace Carr will be Les Miles the head coach of the LSU Tigers.

Miles played and coached under Bo Schembechler at Michigan. Because of that, Miles name is going to be bought up until he accepts or states that he will stay at LSU. Miles does have a buyout for the Michgan job.

This will be a major distraction for LSU as they go for the national championship. Their head coach will be metion with Michigan until Miles or someone else fills it.

Les Miles will have a major decision to make that could hurt LSU chances of winning the national championship.

While I believe Les Miles will definitely end up at Michigan next year, I dont see it effecting their chances at the national title.

A lot of the kids on this LSU team werent recruited by Miles anyway, they were recruited by Nick Saban, so they are used to the coaching carousel and media circus that surrounds it.

While you are right about Nick Saban and his situation, Les Miles is going to have to deal with this until the Michigan job is fill by him or someone else. Also the players that Miles has recuited to LSU will not know for sure if Miles will be at LSU. Plus LSU will have 37 days between the SEC championship game and the National championship game. During that time the rumors of Miles going to Michigan will be talk about until the job is fill by Miles or someone else. While Miles prepares for the national championship game, the rumors of him going to Michigan will not go away until the job is fill.

Again though, there were the same rumors of Nick Saban and NFL jobs leading up to their bowl game his final season with LSU, and that certainly didnt stop them then.

What exactly is it about talk that he might leave that will make them not be as great a team as they are? Will Glenn Dorsey become less of a monster? Will their skill players lose their athleticism?

I dont believe that in game, any player will suddenly blow his coverage because his mind slipped away to thoughts of losing the coach who didnt recruit him to begin with.

I'lll give you a example of a coach being a distraction.

Leading up to Super Bowl XXXI there were rumblings Bill Parcells was leaving the Patriots to coach the Jets. The Patriots were about to play the Packers in the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Parcells did not get along with Bob Kraft and both had to deal with it leading up to the game.

The Packers beat the Patriots 35-21 to win the Super Bowl. Parcells went on to coach the Jets after that Super Bowl.

The same thing might happen to Les Miles. Assuming LSU plays in the national championship game. Leading up to the game, there will be rumors of Miles going to Michigan until Miles or someone else fills the job.

Here's one thing to consider for Les Miles. If he goes to Michigan, he will have a better chance to win the national championship there than at LSU because the SEC is a much tougher league than the Big 10. Plus at Michigan, they will have a better path to the game than LSU because LSU has to content with Florida, Auburn, Alabama, etc. every year, while Michigan has to content with Ohio State, and that's it.

Either way this will be a distraction for Les Miles and LSU.

Ok, let me see if I follow this logic.
A - There are rumbling that a coach is going to leave a team
B- Said team loses the Super Bowl to one of the greatest QB's ever.
The only possible explanation for B is A?

Gonna have to disagree there. There are 1000 variables to any game, so it is impossible to say that this was the cause or even a contributing factor. Of course over the course of sports history you'll be able to point to an occasion where a coach was in a controversy about leaving and his team then lost. Its a 2 team game, there's a 50% chance the team of the coach in question is going to lose.

Almost anyone who has played sports at any level will tell you that nothing off the field effects you on the field. When you're out there, everything else is zoned out. This does not effect performance. Its just an excuse if your team does lose.

Paragraph 4=meaningless to this TD, but for fun, here goes. SEC is overrated. They are the best conference, but are still overrated. Big Ten is not 2 teams, get over that. PSU won it 2 years ago, Wisc is consitently good, as is Iowa. This year is a down year, you're kidding yourself if you think its easy in the Big Ten

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have to know that Callahan is going to be gone next year, and often players play HARDER for a coach they know is going, to somehow defend their coach.

The kids at LSU want a title, and they won't stop playing because Miles might leave. You don't have to convince an SEC program what the stakes are.

My only concern is that if Les Miles leaves, that LSU offers Pelini the head coaching job. We want him in Husker Land.

At least you have the hope that comes with regime change enderandrew. At PSU we know that until he gives it up, we need to accept 3 and 4 loss seasons. Only time that changes is when an athlete as unbelievable as MRob comes along and take a horrific offensive game plan and make it work anyway.

I think and SEC title game might have a lot more to play into LSU chances then any michigan rumors

It is a huge distraction for the coach. So, yes, it affects the chances.

I don't know what "could derailed" means, so that makes it hard to vote, but I'd lean toward YDT.

Yes, it is a distraction but not a huge one. I cannot see Les leaving LSU. One, he access to better talent in the South at LSU, and two LSU would match whatever Michigan will offer, especially if Les can get the Tigers to the Title game.

Nah, Les can stay in Baton Rouge for all I care.

Assuming he goes, Carr won't be gone until after the bowls are over, so why is this an issue?

There won't be an open seat at Michigan for the media to ask Miles about all the time. Sure, some will ask him about it now, but it's much easier to dismiss when Michigan still has a coach (a tenured coach I might add). There's no distraction there.

I agree with the minority. This can be a big distraction! Also, when the Pistons were playing the Spurs in the 2005 NBA finals... wait, Tim Donaghy was officiating that series. Never mind. Coaching rumors can be a distraction to players though. I mean the Lloyd Carr rumors have to be distracting to Michigan. I love how Carr is handling the situation and how Les Miles is handling it.

Sooners had the same rumors when Stoops took OU to KC for Big 12 championship and then the orange bowl for the title. They still won both.

It depends on how well the staff keeps kids focus.
