Ken Anderson is currently nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
I say there is no way he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Anderson only went to four Pro Bowls. Compare that to some of the other QBs in history, he wouldn't even be nominated.
QBs should only get into the Hall of Fame if they have insanely good stats or if they win like crazy. Anderson did neither. He's only on the top 20 in pass completions, but that's because he played in the West Coast offense where I would have a good completion percentage.
I think that the only reason he's nominated is because he won the MVP in 1981. He isn't even top 25 in passing touchdowns. I don't think he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame sometimes is more than individual stats. Sometimes the HOF represents innovation, or relevance to his time, and his place in history.
Jackie Robinson would be in the HOF for baseball regardless of stats, because of his impact on American culture.
Ken Anderson worked with Bill Walsh, and ushered in an era of the West Coast Offense, and aspects of that offense are used at every level of football decades later. The innovations can not be ignored.
Previous era of QBs also did not throw the ball nearly as much, and the game was so vastly different, that it is hard to compare.
When you look stat-wise at QBs, all the "greats" played from the mid 80's on it seems. How is it possible that the greatest QBs only played in the past two decades? Because the eras were so different, that stats are very slanted towards modern offenses.
For his time, Ken Anderson was extremely relevant and important, and his place in history should not be forgotten.
He deserves at the very least to be considered.

Ken Anderson was great. He's definitely in the top 85 of eligible HOFers, but I don't think he should be a Hall of Famer. In my opinion, Hall of Fame quarterbacks should be reserved for people like Sammy Baugh, the first true QB, Joe Montana, the greatest winning QB of all-time, and Dan Marino, the former stats leader for the QBs. Ken Anderson was one of the first QBs to play in the West Coast offense, but that doesn't mean he should be a Hall of Famer.
There are only 23 QBs from the modern era (post WWII) in the Hall of Fame. Almost all of these guys (besides Broadway Joe) are better than Anderson and bigger names.
Anderson isn't Hall of Fame material. You can't forget on his Super Bowl team he had Dan Ross, Anthony Munoz, Cris Collinsworth, and Charles Alexander. This wasn't a normal Bengals team. They had a great offense.

Are you suggesting that Joe Montana shouldn't be in the HOF because he had guys like Craig, Rathman, Rice, Clark, Lott, Young, etc? Some say Montana's 49ers are one of the 3 best teams of all time. Joe Montana was surrounded by more talent than Anderson, and your argument is we should discount a candidate because of talent around them.
I say good players get in, regardless of talent around them,
IrishR#1 said 11/17, 02:20 PM
No. Montana performed when he was surrounded by some lesser talent early in his career, and again, he won 4 Super Bowls. Ken Anderson had bad teams early in his career, and he lost games. I'm saying that the 1981 season was a bit of a fluke because of the talent, and when he lost some of that talent, his performance suffered.
enderandrew said 11/17, 02:43 PM
Fair enough.
All I'm really saying is that even though his numbers don't stand out as being amazing compared to a Marino today, when he retired, his numbers were still pretty damned good for his time.
The game has changed so much, and passive offenses are all much better today than they used to be, and that is in no small part to the advent of the WCO. Anderson didn't invent it, but if early pioneers like Anderson didn't have success with it, then maybe it doesn't catch on in other places. If Walsh flopped developing Anderson, would he get to develop Montana later on?
Anderson's play, and the early development of the WCO had a HUGE impact on football on all levels from high school to the pros. That kind of impact needs to be noted in the hall.

Bill Walsh didn't invent the WCO. It originated with Sid Gillman decades earlier and took many forms across the league at the same time Walsh was using it.
Walsh was an innovator in many ways, but to attribute the WCO to him is factually wrong.

Most people consider Walsh the father of the WCO because he championed it, and made it famous.
Chuck Berry invented rock and roll arguably, but the Beatles and Elvis get credit, because that's how it became huge.

Also, I didn't say that Walsh invented the offense. I said Anderson ushered it in as a player, which is true.

Anderson does not belong in the Hall. Phil Simms is more deserving. I can't believe this guy is actually comparing Ken Anderson to Jackie Robinson. That's like comparing Christopher Columbus to Manny, Moe and Jack

The only reason Anderson is not in the HOF is because he played for The Bengals, they are a small market team and he got less press than some others.

The only reason Ken Anderson is not in the HOF is because he played for the Bengals. Had he played in a larger market and gotten more hype he would be in by now.
