Yes, we all know that Ryan Braun won. We all know that Braun had one of the best seasons ever by a rookie, blah blah blah. But was he really that good?
I don't think so.
My boy Troy Trever Tulowitzki should have won.
It doesn't appear so when you look at the immediate offensive stats (HRs, RBIs, AVG, the like) as Tulowitzki had solid numbers for a rookie, but Braun had amazing numbers for a guy who only played 113 games.
But if Braun is such a talent, why wasn???t he on the Brewers??? active roster at the beginning of the season?
His fielding.
Braun???s fielding was horrible. .895 FP and 26 errors? That???s horrible. And did Braun really help his team? When Braun made his debut on May 24, the Brewers were 28-20. They finished 83-79. With Braun, they went 55-59 which cost them the playoffs.
The Rockies went to the World Series. Who helped more?
TTT.
Nomarfan5 said 11/16, 06:05 PM
I know that everyone here is such a TT lover, but here me out. Anytime a rookie sets multiple significant offensive records (HR per AB, SLG %) I think they deserve the ROY. Yes, Braun was not as good a fielder, but lets compare the other stats, I will type the total stat and the average per Game stat.
AVG.
Braun- .324
Troy- .291
HR-
Braun- 1 every 13.3 AB's (34)
Troy- 1 every 25.38 AB's
Hits
Braun- 146 in 451 AB's
Troy- 177 in 609 AB's
Runs
Braun- 1 every 4.96 AB's (91 total)
Troy- 1 every 5.86 AB's (104 total)
RBI's
Braun- 1 every 4.65 AB's (97)
Troy- 1 every 6.15 AB's (99)
SLG %
Braun- .634 (highest in NL, but did not qualify for title)
Troy- .479
OBP
Braun- .370
Troy- .359
SB
Braun- 15
Troy- 7
So, lets for the sake of argument, say that every single error Braun made resulted in a run. thats 26 Runs, 15 more than Tulo would surrender. But lets say that Braun got 609 AB', the same as Tulo. He would have
48 Homers to Tulos 24
123 runs compared to Tulo's 104
131 RBI's compared to Tulo's 99.
Total that is 24 more Homers, 19 more Runs scored, and 32 more RBI's, for about 49 more total run production.
49 runs helping > less than 24 runs hurting.
Braun for ROY
DJTG_2010 said 11/17, 10:38 AM
Ok so Jim L. has basically been making my argument for me, but here is another thing you conveniently forgot:
If Braun had played the same number of games as Tulo, he would have 36 errors in the 155 games Tulowitzki played.
That is atrocious. I don't care who you are. As Jim said, TT set the record for most HRs and RBIs by a shortstop and all that good stuff.
Also, Tulowitzki spent most of the year batting in either the second, seventh, or eighth spots, which are not condusive to RBIs and such. Braun, however, only batted cleanup in all of the games he played. As most of us know, cleanup hitters usually have the most opportunities to produce runs. Put Tulo up in either the 3, 4, or 5 spot and he's got a bunch more RBIs.
The offensive stats don't really tell the story for these two, as their different spots in the batting orders led to different stats. With the fielding, however, I think we can all see who the better player was.
Nomarfan5 said 11/20, 11:24 PM
FACT: Braun is a HORRIBLE fielder, i give you this
also FACT- He is still more valuable to his team.
You bring up the Brewers record with Braun as opposed to without. Well, The Rockies might not have benefited as much from Tulo as they did other sources. The Rockies pitching staff had the lowest ERA in the MLB after the All-Star break. They are the main reason for the Rockies success, not Troy
Lets take a look at both of their Post All-Star Break stats
AVG-
Braun- .309
Troy- .296
Errors
Braun-
Troy-
SLG
Braun- .618
Troy- .474
OBP
Braun- .358
Troy- .356
HR's
Braun- 23
Troy- 15
RBI's
Braun- 65
Troy- 61
Runs
Braun- 55
Troy- 54
If you take a look at these stats, they are similar, and Braun is better than Troy in every one. Yet you criticize one for his teams performance (Braun,) while lauding the others? I'm sorry, but this just doesn't make sense.
You also bring up the point that Tulo broke NL SS records, well, Braun broke all time rookie records, come on, if a RB breaks a record for passing TD's by an RB, Brady is still the better QB.
Braun is a bad fielder yes, but he contributes more to his team, wins them more games, than Troy Trever Tulowitzki
DJTG_2010 said 11/23, 10:53 AM
At the All-Star break, the Brewers were 49-39. They went 34-40 down the stretch to finish 83-79. The Rockies were 44-44 at the break. They went 46-28 down the stretch.
Also, when you bring up the numbers, you have to take into account the batting order. Braun was in the cleanup spot from Day 1. When a player is in the cleanup spot, of course they are going to have more opportunities to drive in runs and be pitched to. Tulowitzki spent most of his time bouncing around between second, seventh, and eighth in the order. A player is not going to get that many opportunities that low in the order.
You say that Braun contributed to his team. How could he contribute to the team if Yost had to take him out of the game for a defensive replacement? It's hard to contribute positively from the bench.
Braun is a product on offensive emphasis, where everyone sees the offensive stats and does not see the defense. As Jim L. said, again, Braun was last in range factor and zone rating for third basemen. Do you really want this guy manning the hot corner for you?
It's quite obvious that TTT should have won this.
Defense wins championships.
Who was in the World Series?
Nomarfan5 said 11/23, 11:57 AM
The Rockies Pitching staff had the lowest ERA in the majors, while Tulowitzki's 1st half stats were not significantly better than his 2nd half stats. You are giving hi credit for something that is not he was not primarily responsible for.
The Brewers, on the other hand, had one of the worst 2nd half ERA's, and Ben Sheets was injured. Are you saying that this is Ryan's fault?
You bring up batting order, and yes, while this may help RBI's, it doesn't help stats that Braun produced more prolificly at, such as AVG., SLG, OBP, Homers, and Runs
You also say that how can he contribute to his team when Yost took him out in the 8th or 9th. Well, he contributed by putting up the stats he did for the other 7 or 8, then not being out there in the 8th and 9th. Are you honestly trying to tell me that Braun did not help his team win games?
And if you did want to mention playoffs, I would proceed to mention his .195 AVG in the playoffs, with 1 homer and 1 RBI in 12 games. Oh, and errors? He had 3 of them.
If you still insist on playoffs as a reason, the voting took place before the postseason.
thank you have a nice day, and good TD

Tulo had GREAT offensive numbers for a rookie SS...set record for homers and RBIS by a rookie SS...but he also played the best defense of any SS in baseball...
Braun was the worse defensive starter in baseball...at any position...and he's a converted SS, you'd think he'd have some range, but he's last in range factor and last in zone rating for 3Bs...not only does he make a lot of errors, he doesn't get to the ball either...
When I think about awards like MVP and ROY, I look at the whole picture, not just offense...if Braun was middle of the road defensively, cool...but he wasn't
To quote a site I read a few days ago:
Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers.
John...That last sentence is what I've been saying for years...and it comes to all awards...I mean, Tulo was, by far, the best fielding SS not only in the NL but in baseball and he didn't even win the gold glove...
check this out...
In the NL balloting. Ryan Braun barely edged Troy Tulowitzki, 128-126, to pick up the hardware. This was a very tough call, and it's not clear whether the closeness of the vote reflects the difference in the performance of each player's team, a desire by the voters to show that they're not cowed by big hitting numbers, or an actual understanding of the defensive difference between the two.
That difference was astronomical, probably enough to overcome Braun's staggering edge at the plate. In about two-thirds of a season -- remember, the Brewers didn't call Braun up until May 24 -- he was worth 50 runs above a replacement-level hitter. Tulowitzki, who played from Opening Day, was worth 30. Defensively, however, Braun was wretched, costing the Brewers 15 runs as compared to a replacement-level third baseman. Tulowitzki, meanwhile, was a terrific defensive shortstop, saving the Rockies 46 runs above replacement.
When you translate those performances to wins, you find that Braun was worth 3.9 wins above replacement (WARP), and Tulowitzki a whopping 8.5 WARP.
This isn't just the difference between the two in one system. John Dewan of Baseball Info Solutions estimates that the difference between the two defensively at more than 50 runs, and the gap between them will be comparable whether you use Ultimate Zone Rating or Probabilistic Model of Range or any of the play-by-play systems out there that evaluate defensive performance. Ryan Braun was an amazing hitter in 2007, and in most seasons would have deserved the Rookie of the Year Award. This year, however, he was up against arguably the best defensive player in the league, and a good hitter in his own right.
if you get to the bigs, you SHOULD be able to do all parts of the job...not just hit...and I don't think you can be award the best rookie in your league if you can only do half the job...no matter how well you do it...

you DID make a good argument...
but here's the thing...corner outfielders traditionally produce more than middle infielders...Tulo didn't put up Braun numbers offennively, but he DID set records for HR and RBIs by a rookie SS...and he was the best fielder, by far, at one of the 2 hardest postions in baseball...
Since you bring up wha tBraun would have doine if he had played the whole season, If Braun had played since the beginning, he might have set a record for errors in a season...see, not only was he the worse fielder as far as fielding % of any starter in baseball at any positon, he was last in range factor and zone rating...

corner infielders traditionally produce more than Middle, now, if we compare 3B to SS< i wholeheartedly disagree. I would say with the exception of A-Rod, SS are better hitters than 3B these days.
Good hitting SS
Jimmy Rollins
Hanley Ramirez
Jose Reyes
Tulowitzki
Edgar Renteria
Derek Jeter
Miguel Tejada
Orlando Cabrera
Johnny Peralta
maybe more
good hitting 3B
Aramis Ramirez
Braun
Zimmerman is pretty good
A-Rod
Miguel Cabrera
Mike Lowell
NOMAR!!!!!!!! lol
there are probably more, but these are who pop into my head. I think in todays game, there are more SS that are very good hitters than 3B.

Did you conveniently forget David Wright, Chipper Jones, Garrett Atkins?
...and I meant, power hitting and run producing, not singles hitting...my apologies for not being more clear. Tulo was 5th in homers this season for SS...his homer total would have been tied for 8th in homers...

Besides, how can you get an award for being the best rookie when you're the worse fielder in baseball?
I mean, there are two parts of the game, offense AND defense...Tulo was great at both (especially for a SS), and he was the best fielding SS in the game...as a rookie...Braun had great offensive numbers, but was the worse fielder of all starters in baseball, at any position...

Seriously...should the rookie of the year have t0o be pulled late in games cause his defense is THAT bad...? Check it out....
Third base may or may not be his long-term spot. A poor fielder, Braun had to be removed for defensive purposes in late innings, which not only embarrassed him but also eliminated a bat that produced the highest slugging percentage for any rookie in big-league history.
It is possible that Braun, who became a third baseman mostly after he turned pro, will learn to adequately play the position. Ned Yost has requested that he take 1,000 ground balls a day during the off-season, a drill that Braun will soon begin in California. Mets third baseman David Wright became a passable defender, so, yes it is possible.
Problem is, the Brewers don't have a lot of time for Braun to demonstrate that he won't hurt them defensively. The Brewers lost the NL Central by two games last season partly because they were a bad defensive team. The window of opportunity in the division will continue to narrow with Chicago's money and St. Louis' resolve.
After Braun's presentation to the local media Tuesday, I asked general manager Doug Melvin where the Brewers will eventually play their natural-born hitter. Melvin said Braun was completely open to change, that he would willingly go to the left-field spot vacated by Geoff Jenkins and learn the position.
Presumably, Braun would do less defensive damage in an outfield corner if he doesn't report to Maryvale in three months with a better grip on the infield corner. But that's a spring-training decision for Yost to make. In the meantime, it gives Melvin more options in the free-agent market. He could, for example, sign a third baseman.
