His time was up. The 2007 Yankees finished with their least amount of wins with Torre as manager since 2000, and even then they still beat the Mets in the World Series.
After winning four World Series titles in his first five years and appearing in the World Series in 6 of his first 8 years, it was clear it was time for change in New York.
In 2007, the Yankees finished second in the AL East for the first time since 1997, Torre's second season. They had not been to a World Series since 2003 and had not won since 2000, a "drought of biblical proportions" in the Steinbrenner era. The Yankees had not made it past the ALDS since their 2004 collapse against the Red Sox.
It is clear that the Yankees needed some fresh air by getting rid of Torre and bringing in Girardi. Torre simply did not have the touch he had in New York he had when he started.
Exit Torre.

The Yankees made Torre the scapegoat.
Funny how the Dodgers snatched him up with lightning quickness once Torre anounced he wasnt accepting that insulting offer better known in Steinbrenner eyes as a gentlemenly demotion(paycheck hatchet job).
The Yankees problems were that they got greedy by signing all this talent on offense instead of pouring money into that pitching staff.
A-Rod, Giambi, Jeter, Posada, etc. would have been the pieces necessary to win in the playoffs had Ebeneezer Screwthepitchingstaffbrenner been willing to spend dollars there as well.
Nobody knows how GREATLY the Dodgers will improve with Torre running the show, but there is NO DOUBT that when Torre does vastly improve them, it will show that his managerial skills were not the problem in NY, it was the guys making the decisions above him on where to spend the money necessary to win.

Ok, so if Torre is such a great manager, how come what some called the best managerial work of his career only merits a first round exit? If he is such a fantastic manager, he should be able to manage around lack of talent.
Fact is, his time is up with the Yankees. He should be able to win every year the talent on the team. He has been losing considerable ground since the 2001 World Series the Yanks lost to the D'Backs. The Yankees needed a fresh face. Torre's act was getting old in the clubhouse. If he was really that good of a manager, he would have won one or two more World Series since 2000.
The main argument I have is that the Yanks needed a fresh face. Torre had been there for over a decade, won four World Series, and that's all nice, but it's clear he wasn't getting the job done anymore.
Enter Girardi.
Cassidy's House: '67 GTOing said 11/24, 11:40 PM
Torre is a great manager. Ask any player he has EVER played for. Nothing wrong with Torre, but everything wrong with Yankee front office who supplies Torre with substandard starting pitching every year because they think they can just sign all these offensive guys to just outscore people and that doesnt work.
Girardi wont win more games this year with the Yanks unless they do something out of character and sign some FA starters of quality, not guys past their prime like Randy Johnson, etc.
The lack of rings in the Torre years isnt his cross to bear. That crap belongs squarely in the lap of King George, Cashman, and the rest of the the Yank brainrust. Yes, rust.
Whats a fresh face worth? Dusty Baker in Chicago? No. Grady Little in L.A.? No. Bruce Bochy in SF? No. I could go on endlessly, but fresh faces are not the answer. The act that is getting clubhouse tired is Steinbrenner, but since he wont fire himself, Torre was a sacraficial lamb on an altar that should of had Porgie's head on it.
Enter Girardi will prove to be more of the lame for the Yanks.

Torre had a bunch of young and inexperienced pitchers in New York. In Los Angeles he's getting a bunch of injury-prone veterans. Also, the Dodgers have overpaid for some guys and made some bust moves recently. Also, for the fresh faces part, Baker was six outs from the World Series in Chicago, Little took the Dodgers to the playoffs in 2006, and Bochy inherited a very bad ballclub in San Francisco. But this is all besides the point. We aren't talking about Torre in LA. We're talking about Torre in New York.
Torre was done in New York. You say he was being made the scapegoat and all that good stuff, and that is exactly why he was done. He was losing all of his impact and control over the players. Many of the players were playing for greed. Torre barely had control over the major parts of the clubhouse. He was done. No more control over the players. Being blamed for the troubles. It was time for him to get out. He deserved to lose his job.
I personally think he won't be of that much help in LA...
Cassidy's House: '67 GTOing said 11/26, 09:57 PM
Torre's young and inexperienced pitchers in New York are the responsibility of Yankees management who either drafted them or traded for them or brought them up early due to injury, BUT NO FAULT OF TORRE!
Torre NEVER lost control of his players. Name ONE player who ever bad-mouthed Torre, ONE! There is NONE!
Torre deserved A RAISE for all the crap Steinbrenner put on his plate.

Report Offensive CommentI agree with Cassidy on this one. The Yankees left him with a lack luster pitching staff(those young pitchers are all going to be good in a couple of years) and he just couldnt win with all of that inexperience, and an aging Mike Mussina

Report Offensive CommentVote to Cassidy. If Torre had won the division every year up until now and had won 2 WS the people in favor of sending him packing would say "he should have won more WS." If he had won 8, they would be saying "with that talent he should have won 10!"
It never ends with Yankee fans.

Report Offensive CommentTorre deserved a bonus instead of a pay cut. "The Boss" cut his legs off, then bought him a new pair of tennis shoes, and penalized him for not running fast enough. Torre got the most out of what he had available. You can't win at this level without pitching. Someone above said Torre was the scapegoat. Steinbrenner bought everything else, so he had to have one. Torre was an easy target.
Vote to Cassidy

Report Offensive CommentMeh, it was time for Joe to go, just to shake things up. He didn't "deserve" to be fired, but he also didn't deserve the huge contract he wanted.
He's no worse than anyone else as a manager, and he handles the clubhouse as well as anyone does (which makes him a perfect replacement for love-him-or-hate-him-but-mostly-hate-him Grady Little), but his bullpen management was legendarily bad and his other in-game moves were occasionally inexplicable.
Joey Four Rings usually wasn't the reason the Yankees won when they won and he usually wasn't the reason they lost when they lost. He mostly didn't matter at all.
Nice guy, though. I wish him well.

Report Offensive CommentThe Yankees' first round exit was not the fault of Torre but hose who are on the field and swing the bats. Managers can only do so much... other than suit up themselves and hope to alter the result. by their own hands.

Report Offensive CommentI've said for a few years that Torre needed to go. He was a failure with the Braves and the Cardinals. He only succeeded in New York with an unlimited checkbook. Anybody could succeed with that roster.
