Pick the 3 women athletes in history that would have been the best candidates to be the first women to play in the 3 major American sports.
Baseball- JENNY FINCH. She's a horse. Big and heavy enough that she would be around the MLB average is size and weight. Her 71 mph "riseball" has been called the equivilent of a 100 mph fastball in baseball. If she can throw heat like that, she shoulda been in this dang league. But most revealing is her ability to regularly strikeout all sorts of .300+ MLB hitters on This Week in Baseball. Including LoDuca, Garciaparra, Edmonds, Sweeney among others
Basketball- CANDACE PARKER- The best college b-ball player in the world right now might wanna reconsider what draft she's gonna go for. At 6'3" and with a 33+ vertical and wingspan of a 6'7" player, she could easily be effective out on the perimeter. She frequently slams in womens games and her outside shooting and quickness is unparalleled. She could be like a Richard Hamilton type, without the giant head.
Football- MARIA SHARAPOVA. 6'3", great footwork and with a cannon arm. She'd be at least as good as a Pennington at QB. She also has the reflexes to get off quick slants a-la Montana.

Let me preface this by saying I am downright scared of fast-pitch softball.
Regardless of that, I don't think Jennie Finch could make the transition from softball to baseball easily, if at all. If she could, it would have to be at one of the positions, not pitching. And even that would be tough becuase of range and size-of-field differences. This is mostly due to fact that the pitching mechanics of baseball and softball are so radically different. In softball, the "stress" is more on the elbow and in baseball it's on the shoulder, which takes a bigger toll. That's why we don't see most pitchers pitching every day anymore, unlike softball in which a girl could pitch just about every game of the season.
Do I think Jennie Finch could make fools of Major League hitters on the softball diamond? Damn right. Do I think she would have the same success on the baseball diamond? Probably not.

Damn it, jets. I thought you were gonna make a list. That was the purpose of the TD! But since i challenged you i can't reasonably complain.
Finch's father was a respected pitching coach. He would teach her the mechanics of overhand pitching. She is 6'2" and over 200 lbs. (although for womans vanity reasons she lowers that number)
She has legimate abilities to locate the strike zone and a powerful gun.
I'm not saying she would be a teams ace. But you could probably get some middle relief out of her.
and, the fact that a hitter is facing a woman would actually be an imtimidation factor for some hitters. They would want to get a hit so badly, they would over press. And strike the **** out. She could be successful, if someone would give her a chance.

Ahh, alright--after you said what you did in the other I thought I'd have to do what I did. My bad, Noon.
As for Ms. Finch (or is it Mrs. something else? Ithought she got married?), it would take a while to build up the shoulder strength necessary to pitch even middle relief. While the men may press against a woman, she may press due to the added distance and change in throwing style. While on this, I'd like to see Clemens pitch underhand. It'd be a hearty LOL indeed.
Now, to get back to what the TD is supposed to be about--I think Maria Sharapova would make a good pitcher. Tennis is all about the shoulder and the range of motion in serving and pitching are VERY similar. Baseball and tennis both incorporate quick reaction times and great hand eye coordination. Strange as it may sound, I think a tennis player would have more success at baseball than a softball player.

Ah, that's a pretty interesting theory, jets. I wonder what a 125 mph serve translates to off a mound. Maybe the Cubs oughta give Maria a call.
So I assume, if you want Maria as your baseball player, then does that mean you want Jenny in pads? She's pretty well built, maybe a good fullback?
In all seriouness, though, the most likely of these 3 sports to have a woman b able to compete with the men would be baseball. It's not a contact sport and the athletic gap is less significant in most cases. You could find a good woman 2nd baseman.. er i mean basewoman, who could be a good contact hitter and fielder like that girl Watley from UCLA.

I'd definitely agree with your statement about baseball/softball. The transition would most likely be easiest there but, like I've stressed, a pitcher would have to definitely change positions due to the mechanics.
Finch wouldn't be bad as a runner but how about Ms. Parker at WR? She's got the ups and got the height so why not?

I wanted to put more reasons for Maria, but they cut me off.

Report Offensive CommentI think a female kicker is more likely than a female QB. Can Sharapova take a hit from Ray Lewis? She looks pretty small.
There are female kickers in the college ranks.
And what about Diana Taurasi? She plays WNBA, European Ball, and on the US team all at once, and she dominates in all of them. She was also a monster force in college.

Report Offensive CommentThought you should have tried to put forth a top soccer playr for kicker in the NFL.
Attacking baseball with a pitcher might be a stretch as well, though no reason she might not be able to compete in AA or AAA (you didn't specify the big leagues) (what do I know of women's softball?)
Still, theJets is trying to woose out on listing some better prospects (that was the point of your TD), or maybe just stalling until his last argument....
So, for a lack of displaying and <ahem> of his own in his opening TD, vote goes to Noon.
