Penn State needs to NOT extend JoePa's contract beyond next season.

I know the man has been Penn State for 40+ years, but the time has come for Penn State to move on. This is a decision that honestly should have been made years ago, but his legacy justified a great deal more patience than the average coach.

He had a chance to leave on top with the 2005 team, but chose to stick around, and has allowed the team to fall back into mediocrity since then, on the field and off. Next season they return 20 starters (assuming Justin King wont go pro), so they have a chance to have a decent season for him to go out on. He has 1 year left on his contract, and Penn State should decide that 2008 will be his last season as their coach.

Remember what happened 3 football seasons ago when people all over the nation (and in Happy Valley) said "The time has come for Penn State to move on"? Maybe you do. But just in case you don't, let me refresh your memory. The Penn State Nittany Lions went the season with only 1 loss and finished at #3, only behind USC and Texas. They then beat Bowden in the Orange Bowl. Now it's happening all over again. Look, this man can still coach; he has it in him. He has no control on what those players do off the field; it's not like he can follow all of them around all day. This "mediocre" team is still an okay team, and you never know, he can have an even better year next season. I mean, come on, this season is filled with upsets. Maybe he had a bad year, I don't know, but there is no doubt in my mind that Joepa can still coach college football. And I don't think 20 starters returning won't just give you "a chance to have a decent season". And after that season? He can get good players to build with. This year is an off-year, and you can't just go running around predicting next year when this year's season is still going on. They can go from "mediocre" to great next year, like GB in th NFL

My off field comment wasnt even as much directed at the teams 2 campus fights, underages, or DE from '04 being convicted of stabbing a man 97 times as much as it was the mediocre recruiting classes they've been putting together. Why? JoePa almost never visits players at their high schools or houses, which the likes of Tressel, Carroll, and the great recruiter Zook do all the time. Paterno wont because he's old and stubborn.

And I remember '05, I also remember '00, '01, '03, and '04. Penn State can count on one hand the number of victories over Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa since 2000. Off hand, I count a win over OSU in '01 and '05, no wins against Michigan, a win over Wisconsin in '05 and '07, and over Iowa in '07. Thats it. 0-6 v. Michigan, 2-6 v. OSU, 1-5 v. Iowa, and 2-6 v. Wisconsin. If you only get your wins against the lesser teams, you are the definition of mediocre.

2005 was a result of Michael Robinson being a phenomenal athlete, period. We had great senior leadership and a quarterback that could take the joke of an offensive gameplan thrown at him and make something of it.

JayPa will not be fired until Joe is gone. That is enough on its o

Paterno has a different approach on football. It got the PSU program pretty far so far, and he's not going to change his methods. He can still recruit, look at some of the players he has gotten (D. Williams, D. Connors). You can't say he can't recruit. Pure records against conference powerhouses don't tell the whole story. The last 3 Michigan games could have gone either way, they usually play okay against OSU (who has been a national powerhouse the last few years), last year could have been a W against Wisconsin. Look, Paterno's teams come out to play every Saturday. They could have won some of those losses, and you can't use 7 years ago to predict what's going to happen in the next 3 years, just like you can't use the Yankee's World Series championships in the 1920's and 30's to say how they will do next year and the year after. It's all in the past, and I think JoePa would be a huge contributor to the future. As for 2005, it wasn't just because of Robinson, he had players all around him that year too. One player doesn't win every game but one, gives you a #3 ranking, and wins an Orange Bowl. 22 players plus special teams do all of that. JoePa has to stay to keep PSU a big name.

JoePa has to stay to keep PSU a big name? Have you seen the facilities there? Do you know Penn State has the largest alumni group in the nation. No one man is bigger than the program. Penn State is a traditional power, and it will not go away when JoePa does.

You name a couple players that Joe recruited, but look at their overall recruiting classes. They are middle of the pack, which in turn, makes PSU a middle of the pack team. People at Penn State want a team that does more than finish middle of the pack, with 1 exception every 10 years, which is what we are now. 'playing ok' and 'could have gone either way is not enough'.

You say Joe wont change his ways, but he already has, and thats why he needs to quit. There was a time he wouldnt begin to let his QB's turn it over 4 times in the red zone in 1 game and leave him in, but he does now. There was a time when you could depend on him to outcoach the guy on the other side, now you couldnt name me the last time he did that. We lose to teams that are more talented than. What does that tell you?

Joe had a great quote "winning without honor is an unseasoned dish". Well losing with it is no better.

But when you think "Penn State", the first thing that comes comes to your mind is "Joe Paterno" or "football". PSU is known for Paterno. Just because your recruiting is middle of the pack doesn't mean your team will be the same. That's where the great coaches like Joe step in. They take that so-so team and turn them into an amazing team.

Joe does not need to quit. He is too good of a coach. It's the same for him with Brett Favre; people always say he needs to quit, but we don't wait to see what he says for himself. He comes back, we complain, and then he has a great year Joe Pa in the future is a good future for PSU.

haha, same here, that last word is supposed to be 'own'

this is a great throwdown, and being a penn st. fan, i would have to agree with wbcincy one on thing...that PSU should take a wait and see approach to his contract, and if PSU wins their bowl game, and has a big ten title season next year or better...keep him for a couple more years. but another mediocre team or worse, and PSU might start grooming Tom Bradley for the spot. WE ARE....PENN STATE!

1199 characters this time, I'm doing good!

Keep in mind just how die hard I am for Penn State and how much this TD truly pains me to have to write about JoePa. I just think for his sake and the football team, its time. My grandparents were class of '39, my parents were class of '72, and I'm class of '04. We've had our season tickets in our family since the Beaver was built, so I'm as invested in the team as anyone, and I have desperately wanted JoePa to be able to go out on top, but I'm afraid he had his best shot in '05.

Just look at some things, JayPa is the QB coach, and he calls the passing plays. Thats right, someone else calls the running plays, great scheme there. And then when Joe doesnt like whats called, he screams at McQueary, who then has to relay that up to those 2 in the booth, because Joe wont wear a headset. Back to JayPa, what has this guy ever done to deserve his position other than be born with the right last name? Name a QB for Penn State who has improved from his freshman season AS A QB at PSU under Jay? I know MRob was great, but he was great as an athlete that could create, not in his ability to read D's or improve his quarterbacking skills.
Against Michigan this year, Joe said after the game he thought we could run on them, and thats why our offensive gameplan didnt work. Did he even considere watching either of UM's 2 losses? You know, where teams beat them with spread O's? Nope, its a big game on the road, so rest assured that Joe will have the most conservative gameplan ever.

November 19, 2007  10:51 PM ET

i'm a penn state fan and i say he needs to go. the only reason they are still turning out good seasons is simply because they are penn state. people want to play for the white and blue. joe pa, god bless his soul, is a penn state legend but needs to step down. have u ever heard his press conferences? he has no clue whats going on. he's merely a figured head. tom bradley should be the coach.

November 19, 2007  10:53 PM ET

also, morelli is a bum and i can't wait til next year when he's gone. we also need a solid running back. kinlaw is mediocre at best.

November 19, 2007  11:36 PM ET

luckily kinlaw is gone. I liked what I saw of Royster this year, and Stepfon Green, who redshirted is supposed to have breakaway speed. Also, we have 2 RB's from Ohio coming in next year, a speed guy and a bruiser, that are very solid, so I think RB ought to be alright.

I get optomistic about our potential talent, and then reality hits...we're going to get outcoached and it is very likely we wont have our best players on the field because they havent 'paid their dues' yet.

This year, Royster should have been in over Scott and Kinlaw. Chris Bell is a stud, but since he's in Joe's doghouse, he doesnt sniff the field. At the US Army all-america game, all week at practice it was a debate over who was the best WR, Chris Bell or Percy Harvin....lets so which coach utilized that talent best the first 2 years.....
Could we have done less with more than talent than we did with Quarless this year?
Its all just so frustrating, these kids deserve better.

November 19, 2007  11:56 PM ET

ya, joe pa's system is based solely on seniority. that's good news about the rb's tho, should be interesting. whose up at qb? devlin?

November 20, 2007  04:02 PM ET

The QB is a big question, I hope its Devlin, but again, Darryl Clark has paid his dues, so who knows.

Either way, we're going either have a more intelligent QB who can check down and mayb even go so far as to audible (gasp), or a mobile QB who can create when things break down. So I'm hoping for improvement at the position either way.

November 20, 2007  04:13 PM ET

i'm PSU all the way....and maybe now with Carr retiring we can finally beat Michigan....but prob not until Joe Pa goes. He is everything PSU...but he is holding a good team back....as hard as it is- vote to Wbcincy

November 21, 2007  08:54 AM ET

Cheezhead, you cant be a Penn State fan or you'd know better than this. You talk about Joe taking an average team and turning them into an amazing team..this isnt the 80's, that doesnt happen anymore. Joe takes great talent and makes them an ok team. Name for me the last game where Joe outcoached another coach? If you really are a fan and you watch the games, you'll have to look way back.

I could see where the casual fan doesnt see where I'm coming from, but trust me, Penn State fans know that what you're saying about Joe is no longer true

November 22, 2007  11:27 AM ET

I'm a big PSU fan, and you wait, if they keep JoePa, great things will happen.
