The Twins are losing Hunter, a fan favorite, who is also leaving a gaping hole in CF. The Twins also can't afford to resign Santana, and Santana has been vocal that he doesn't think Minny is where he belongs. The Twins are going to try and get as much for him in return as possible, and they have to trade him. They can't let him walk in free agency.
My prediction is that Minny asks for ridiculous offers this off-season to see how desperate other teams are, while honestly hoping that no one takes the bait right away. The Twins keep Santana in the first half of next year for the Twin's own playoff hopes, and then they trade him away right before the deadline.
The team that lands Santana needs really deep pockets to resign Santana at the end of the year. They need two young pitching prospects to replace Santana, and they need to offer a CF. The Red Sox can offer Lester, Buchholz, and Crisp. No team can beat that offer. The Yanks can (and probably will offer) Hughes, Damon and then I'm not sure who else. But the Yanks were trying to trade Damon last year, and no one was interested. Damon is obviously declining, he is old, and his contract is too big.

I'll bite on this one.
There have been reports that Epstein is looking at the possibility of nabbing Santana from the Twins. That would be a great move, if he could find a way to do it and not dumping any of his young studs.
I'm gonna refute your idea completely by saying that the Red Sox WONT get Santana at all. Why? You pointed it out yourself. They would have to offer a lot to get Santana. Putting guys like Coco Crisp in a trade deal aint no big thing, but putting Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz is a no-no.
There is no way in hell that Theo Epstein trades away two young studs like Lester and Buchholz. Those two guys are going to be the future of the pitching staff right along side Beckett, Papelbon, Dice-K, and Okajima. Those two guys can become future dominant starters.
Santana is the best pithcer in the game right now. Lester and Buchholz can become two of the best in the game and Epstein wont let those two guys go.
If not them, there arent any other guys I would see Epstein putting in a trade to get Santana.
The Sox wont get Santana. Period.
enderandrew said 11/21, 10:47 PM
Young prospects are maybes. They could be great. They could be busts. You don't know.
10 years ago the BoSox traded away Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. for Pedro, and people said they couldn't trade away both studs. Look how that turned out.
2 maybes versus one great player.
And riddle me this Batman, but consider a rotation of Santana, Beckett, Dice-K, Schill and Wakefield. How does that rotation lose in the playoffs?
That is a World Series team, no questions. World Series team, or two maybes?
And they still have guys like Tavarez, Hansen, Lopez, etc. as emergency starters, and they are talking about signing Kerry Wood as a free agent.
You have Timlin, Okajima, Wood, Papelbon as your bullpen. That's insane.
You're saying the Red Sox wouldn't pull the trigger on that deal? If they don't, they have to worry the Yankees end up with Santana, and you can't allow that.
Regardless, what other team can make a better offer?
The Red Sox are the only team that makes sense.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3121887
The Twins want 3-4 big name young studs. A few of them ones they could stick in their opening day lineup.
The Red Sox have "reportedly" said that they would be willing to trade ONE of their young studs. Those guys being: Ellsbury, Buchholz, or Lester. That is it from Red Sox camp.
Your argument is based on the premise that the Red Sox would be willing to trade not only Buchholz, but also Lester, and then Crisp. Crisp has a 5 year contract right now with the Red Sox, and he's making over $3 million per year. Crisp is not an answer to the problems in Minnesota, and the money isnt worth his production. The Sox are not willing to trade more than one of their young guns, nor should they. Buchholz and Lester may never become the quality pitcher that Santana is, but they will still be the #2, #3, or #4 guys in the rotation for the Sox behind Beckett and Dice-K. Epstein would be OUT OF HIS FREAKING MIND to trade away all those guys you say they would be willing to give for Santana.
This deal wont ever get done based on the information given as of today.
enderandrew said 11/21, 11:08 PM
That's because it is early in negotiations.
I predicted the Twins aren't going to let him go until they absolutely have to, and of course the Twins are going to demand 3-4 prospects, just like the Marlins said they wouldn't trade Cabrerra unless they got Lester, Buchholz and Ellsbury all at once. That isn't happening either.
And Boras said you needed a 350 million dollar offer just to talk to A-Rod.
When the trade deadline hits, where else is he going to go? You can't answer that question, and I've asked it three times now.
No other team makes sense. He has no where to go, but to Boston. And again, two prospects or the best pitcher in baseball? Who doesn't pull the trigger on that?
Mac Has Left FN (For Now) said 11/21, 11:14 PM
You just dont get it.
Epstein, Henry, and all the big execs in the Red Sox office have been building this team for the future for a few years now. They have been digging up guys from all over the place. Beckett is the foundation for this team, and guys like Buchholz, Lester, Dice-K, Okajima, Delcarmen, Papelbon, Ellsbury, and Pedroia are all the pieces to the rest of the puzzle.
Theo Epstein is not going to deal his pieces out two or three at a time. He is going to protect them like Mark Cuban is hiding Dirk Nowitzki away from the Lakers.
"When the trade deadline hits, where else is he going to go? You can't answer that question, and I've asked it three times now." Your answer for it is illogical, incorrect, and I have already answered it three times counting my final argument.
The Boston Red Sox DO NOT NEED the best pitcher in baseball. Period.

He said he didn't think the Twins were for him, and the Twins can't afford to sign him.
Lifer, name one other team that is going to get him. No one has the right pieces to trade.

i don't think the twins can afford him either...and i think the Yanks were looking to trade damon to the White sox...very good possibility that he would end up in Bean Town

It would be nice to have Santana play for the Sox, but giving away such young talent like Buchholz, Lester, or Ellsbury(Much less any of the other young studs from the pitching staff) is a price I dont want Epstein to pay.

OK, ender...first off, just b/c the Twins can't sign him doesn't mean he's going to be traded.
Secondly, there's a few teams that could probably afford him...the Yanks could, the Mets could, the Marlins could (Miggy would put the kibosh on Nick Punto at 3rd)

Are you honestly saying the Twins let him walk in free agency and get nothing? The fans are already pissed they are letting Hunter walk.
A couple teams could AFFORD to sign Santana, but they can't offer the right pieces in trade.
Again, no other team in baseball makes sense. He has no where else to go.

Uhh...the Yanks are pushing hard for them, and the Mets are pushing hard for him. Both can afford what the Twins want. The Marlins are interested, and they could certainly afford him as well.

The Sox can definately afford Santana, but trading away such young stars like they have is out of the question. They do not need Santana. That is in short, what I was trying to get across.
Good TD, enderandrew. I havent been in a good TD in a while...

You're saying you shouldn't try to get the best pitcher in baseball? That prospects are better than the best pitcher in baseball?
PROSPECTS ARE BETTER THAN THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL?
Has anyone ever projected Lester to someday be half as good as Santana? When you can get the best pitcher in baseball, you do it. And again, you avoid the question.
Who had the trade pieces? No one except Boston.
Keep ignoring that.

i know i was agreeing with the point that the twins cant afford him...and it makes no sense for him to just walk into free agency...thats just dumb on Minn. part....and why couldn't the idea he purpose work?

I have not ignored the question. I have stated pretty clearly that keeping Lester, Buchholz, or any other young studs that I've named and not nabbing Santana is the right move. I've stated that multiple times. I've stated that the Sox do not need the best pitcher in baseball.

The Angels probably could afford to nab Santana, but then again, they are conservative. They need a bat anyway...(Just random thoughts now)
