i was watching lsu play today and saw hester playing rb. i was like holy crap i cant believe i never thought of this before. the chicago bears should use devin hester at rb. hes got crazy speed and could catch out of the backfield. he could be a reggie bush type player. and then chiacago could go after someone like lamont jordan or a power runner to platoon with him.

Wait, wait, wait... I think you're getting your players confused here. Are you talking about LSU running back Jacob Hester? Are you saying the Bears should draft him?

Or are you talking about using Devin Hester at running back?

I know you said Devin, but I wasn't sure if you made a mistake due to the LSU reference.

Anyway, I'll argue against both. If you are talking about the LSU Hester, you are way off base. He is actually slow for a running back, not fast. He is kinda similar to a Brian Leonard type player, a hybrid halfback/ fullback.

Now, if you are talking about DEVIN Hester... First off, why would you WANT a Reggie Bush type player? I hate to tell you this, but Bush is a pretty bad back. I mean, he has under 500 yards rushing 10 games into the season. He is averaging a PATHETIC 3.6 yards per carry. He has only 4 touchdowns, and yet he has fumbled a WHOPPING five times. His longest run is 22 yards. So, you kinda WOULDN'T want a guy in the Reggie Bush mold.

Now, as for Hester- do you have a death wish for him? Do you realize he weighs only 186 pounds (and listed weight, at that. He is probably closer to 175)? He wouldn't survive a practice at running back, much less a game

no the bears shouldnt draft jacob hester. its just that the last name kinda triggered the devin hester thought. sure hester is only 175 pounds, but if he gains weight this offseason they can start grooming him to be a rb. y wouldnt u want a reggie bush as a platoon player. plus hester would be better. he is faster, has good hands, and can run between some tackles. with the extra weight and training he could do it. this season the bears are going nowhere, but he could do more for them at rb in the future than he will at wr.

Are you kidding me? You know that weight kind of, you know, SLOWS YOU DOWN, right?

Now, no coach will play you at under 200 pound it is just too risky. Most coaches would like their backs to be at least 205 or more.

Hester is probably about 175. You are gonna tell me that Hester is going to put on 30 pounds of muscle in the off-season, and he will come back and be just as fast? Dream on. First off, Hester has a small frame. I doubt he could reach two hundred if he tried his hardest. even if he did make it, he'd be way overweight. The explosiveness would be gone, he'd be WAY out of his comfort zone, and you'd now have a dud RB and no star punt/ kick returner.

Also, Hester CANNOT run between the tackles. First off, I'd like to know how you could, seeing as he has never even done it before. Second, remember he is VERY light! Do you seriously think it is a good idea? The Bears play in the same division as the Vikings. You gonna let Hester go up the middle twice a year on the Williams brothers, who combine for about 660 pounds? 660 on 175? That isn't fair! You gonna send him up the middle on the Packers guys? Jolly, Pickett, Harrell? Or maybe on the Lions, and 360 pound Shaun Rogers

yes its a good idea. pitch it out to him every once in a while. he doesnt have to be the feature guy. and if u think thats too much weight then he doesnt need to put it on. dont let him run up the middle. only on pitches and reverses. and give him some time at wr.

Well, he really ISN'T a running back if you pitch it out to him twice a game and give him a reverse.

And just using him for 3 or 4 plays a game would be two obvious. If he can't run up the middle, everyone knows what is coming. The defense can either expect pass, or flare out the linebackers and spread the line in anticipation of a play stretching the field.

And now, you say use him at receiver. Well, you sound like you're kind of going back on your running back idea. At first, you sounded like you wanted to use him as a full time, or a platoon back. Now, you are talking about using him like a specialty player, giving him just a few snaps a game on offense.

Which is it? Oh right, sorry, you're out of space. Oh well.

Hester has 4.5 speed, which is pretty good, but he's really a guy to be used as a FB/HB. He's a beast!

November 23, 2007  08:46 PM ET

And I'm a tad bit confused here...

Which Hester!?

November 23, 2007  08:46 PM ET

Actually, Hester is more of a 4.42 guy (LOL, 4.5 just sounds so SLOW), but he has better game speed than that.

November 23, 2007  08:47 PM ET

Oh wait... you mean JACOB Hester???? Now I am getting even MORE jumbled!!!!

November 23, 2007  08:47 PM ET

3.6 yds is still better than the bears.(3.3)

November 23, 2007  08:47 PM ET

OK, Jacob Hester is actually closer to a 4.55-4.6 guy, though he could be an excellent player on Sundays in the Mike Alstott role.

Devin is like a 4.4-4.42 guy

November 23, 2007  08:48 PM ET

Yeah, but bigsteven, Devin hester is puny.

You gonna run a 186 pound punt returner into the line of scrimmage right at a pair of mammoth defensive tackles? You can't pitch out on every play!

November 23, 2007  08:51 PM ET

to clear it up. not jacob hester. its just that they have the same last name so it made me think that DEVIN would be a good rb. devin should platoon with someone else to solve the bears rb problem

November 23, 2007  08:58 PM ET

its a good idea IF the bears also pick up a guy to run in between tackles. pitch out to hester ocasionally, and u can still play him some at wr. he would be like brad smith of the jets. kind of a wr-rb combo, but with better hands and AMAZING speed. im not saying he would be the feature back. just help that horrid running game in chi town

November 23, 2007  09:16 PM ET

well i still got comments so i guess im not outta space. they would still line him up at rb even if they arent giving him the ball. ever watch a jags game? best block of the year was jones drew on merriman. how big is he like 5 something? hester could take some carries or make catches out of the backfield

November 23, 2007  09:17 PM ET

Are you serious? You're comparing MJD and Hester?

Drew is short, but he is like 215, and is one of the strongest, thickest backs in the NFL. Hester would get run the **** over.

November 23, 2007  09:18 PM ET

Did you not read my argument? When you put a guy in the backfield two or three plays a game, and never run him up the middle, it is no surprise and it will never, ever work! Plus, defensive linemen can still hit you on pitches and flare routes!

November 23, 2007  09:22 PM ET

did u read mine? he would be in more than just the plays where he gets the ball. he would be in like half the plays. sometimes as a decoy in a 2 back split so that the bigger guy could run up the middle

November 23, 2007  09:27 PM ET

worst. idea. ever.

November 23, 2007  09:28 PM ET

Decoys don't work when everyone knows that you aren't gonna give him the ball.

November 23, 2007  09:34 PM ET

The Bears can line up Devin Hester at runningback about once or twice a game, but to suggest that he be moved to runningback to play the position perminently is ridiculous. He's not big enough to take the pounding and he'd probably get hurt. I think it would be a great idea if the Bears used some packages that line up Hester at runningback and do some different things from those packages, but he can't play runningback. He's not that kind of player.

November 23, 2007  09:34 PM ET

He just can't play the game perminently.

November 23, 2007  09:35 PM ET

I meant to say that he can't play runningback perminently.

November 23, 2007  09:50 PM ET

I say put him at running back you dont have to be 205 i mean look at Warrick Dunn he is like 180.

November 23, 2007  09:59 PM ET

he's also played RB his whole life.
