As NFL commissioner Roger Goodell starts the crackdown on off the field issues, it reminds me of how sports stars get away with many off the field things, and do not receive proper punishment. Many examples come to my mind. The first one is that of the Ravens' Ray Lewis who was charged with murder in 2000. He was acquitted and he did not face any reprimand from Paul Tagliabue. No one knows if he actually committed the murder, but for a normal person, a verdict probably would have been reached. Also on the Ravens, Jamal Lewis was charged with dealing cocaine in 2003 or 2004. He spent about four months in jail, while the person he was involved with was locked up for about a year. The other man's attorney tried to get his client a lesser sentence like Lewis', but he was denied. Pac-Man Jones' repeated run-ins with the law would garner punishment for any normal person arrested or acquitted that many times. It is right for Pac-Man to be punishment and suspended the entire season because his actions warrant those consequences. These are just a few examples, and I hope my facts are right because they are just from memory.

Not most sports stars think they are above the law, some sports stars do like VICK or PACMAN but only a few do things like them not most!
DJTG_2010 said 05/16, 01:25 PM
Yeah well there are still a lot of stars that think they are above the law. There are still the humanitarians. The NFL is one of the better leagues with only a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. Major league baseball is similar to the NFL in which most of the players are good people. In the NBA, many players have been caught at strip clubs and with gun charges. I think many of them think they have money, so they have power. If they want to do these things, they have to think of the consequences and how the public will receive them. If they want to do these things, they can't act like they didn't do anything wrong. Many professional athletes need a wakeup call. Pac-Man and Vick just need a louder one.

NOT alot of stars some stars! most stars would not put there carrear and legacy on the line to do some durgs or get in a fight most stars do not do stupid things
DJTG_2010 said 05/16, 01:38 PM
Most stars don't really care about their how well their legacy looks: Ex.: T.O., Randy Moss. A lot of these guys don't care at all. They are millionaires, so they do what they want. Most of these problems stem from money. They have the money so they do stupid stuff. I agree with bugsy some of the way. African-American players usually get a bad rap, and all the information about Hancock makes it seem a lot worse. Sports stars have the money, therefore, they get the drugs, the women, the alcohol. They think they have money with power so they do what they want. It's just a tragedy.

KOBE you had no point at all in your post, so I voted for dgal. I would say that "most" major league athletes think they can get away with a lot.

there are a lot of good guys out there that are law abiding citizens. it's a shame that a few bad apples ruin the image for everyone

I would have to disagree with dgal2010 because saying MOST of the sports stars is a broad and inconclusive statement. What exactly is most? I doubt that "most" professional athletes are doing anything highly illegal. The cases you point out are far and few in between and also in this age of technology its easier to over react to the slightest thing. If sports stars really thought they were above the law they would do whatever they wanted and MOST athletes aren't doing that. A few bad apples spoils the bunch but thats what it really all is...just a few bad apples.
Having said that i still voted for you because your argument was just better.

Wow, a guy named KOBE is defending guys like Kobe. I agree that most athletes stay out of trouble pretty well, but it's apparent that some of these guys do think they're above the law and unfortunately it seems like most of them (the bad ones) are. If "tank" Johnson wasn't a pro athlete would he have been allowed to get off of his house arrest to go to Florida for the superbowl? Would you or I be able to pull as much crap as Adam Jones and still not be locked up? If you killed your ex and her boyfriend would you be able to write a book about it, while taking some time off from golfing?

bugsy, you are way out of line, it has nothing to do with race, the only reason that comes up is as a defense.
