The Detroit Tigers will represent the American League in the 2007 World Series.

It is true that the Tigers, who currently lead the AL Central, are still two games behind the Boston Red Sox as of May 16. But, despite all the praise Boston has received, the Tigers will represent the AL in the World Series for the second straight year.

Remember, the Tigers are better than last year's team and they have a stellar record without arguably their best starter (Kenny Rogers, out until at least late June). Take that into account and realize the Tigers are playing .667 baseball with four solid pitchers and a Triple-A rotation taking the No. 5 spot. Also, Sheffield is hitting under .200 and is starting to get going.

There is no question the Tigers are one of the top teams in the AL. There also is no question they will defeat Boston in a Best-of-7 series when they meet in the playoffs.

There is no doubt that the Tigers are a solid team this year, but there is less than a 30% chance that they will represent the AL in the World Series this year. The Boston Red Sox are a much more complete team than the Tigers. The Tigers have a nice line-up, the Red Sox have a phenomenal one. The Tigers starting pitching is good, the Red Sox is great. Anytime that Dice-K is a third pitcher and Wakefield is a fourth pitcher, you are in superb shape. Not to mention the Tigers have a lot of competition within their own division this year. The Indians are coming on strong (and are actually the team I picked to win the division), the Twins always make a run later in the year, and it is far too early to count out the White Sox. The Angels also appear to be a quality team out west that is only has two fewer wins than the Tigers do right now. Meanwhile, there is still that certain pinstriped team up north that has a $25 million investment they hope to guide them back to their familiar success. The Tigers are a nice team, but they are at best in second place right now as the favorite to take the AL.

You seem to be overestimating the Red Sox lineup. Trying to convince anyone that Coco Crisp, an elderly Mike Lowell, Willy Mo Pena and Dustin Pedroia make an offense phenominal is crazy.

The Tigers have the most feared 3456 in the league (Sheff, Mags, Guillen, Pudge). Couple that with a top-3 rotation of Rogers, Verlander and Bonderman and you're talking a tough playoff out.

Relying on blister, er, Beckett and an aging Schilling is asking too much.

Well their entire lineup certainly appear to be doing quite well now. Coco is still among the elite leadoff men in baseball, I see no to believe that Mike Lowell will not produce. I don't see how you can possibly compare anyone's top three pitchers in baseball to the Red Sox, all three could be considered in the race for the Cy Young this year.

Dice-K's ERA is over 4, Beckett is heading to the DL and will deal with blister problems the rest of the year. Sounds like good Cy Young candidates to me. Take away Detroit's injuries - Rogers, Bonderman, Zumaya, and they would have a better record than the Sox right now.

And, the Tigers play in a tougher division. By having tough games against the Twins and Indians all season, Detroit will be primed for the playoffs. Your games the pitiful AL East won't help come playoff time.

Hmmmm...I wonder if Ms. Cleo realizes that someone is trying to steal her gig...

No question that the Tigers will beat the Red Sox in the playoffs? How do you know that? They could very well meet in a playoff series this year, but beyond that...

Excellent Red Sox argument TheDeity!

no one beats the red sox in a 7 game series right now

Tigers won't even win their division. Go Tribe!!!

shef is not under .200 hes actually hitting .240. but nice try

What the hell is it with you people and the Red Sox?

May 16, 2007  08:57 PM ET

The Red Sox are a great team, but so are the Tigers. And, when Boston is relying on a Japanese rookie, a 38-year-old crybaby and Mr. Blister to carry them to a title, all I see is a bunch of questionmarks. I'll take young-gun Verlander, Bonderman and Kenny "Mr. Dirt" Rogers anytime.

You complain about Schillings age and antics but you support Kenny Rodgers?

the catcher is the 2, not a 3, 4, 5 or 6

In 2 games against each other this year, Red Sox won 7-1 then Tigers won 7-2.... It's an even matchup, so it just depends on who thinks Detroit is better and who thinks Boston is better.

Put me down for Detroit.

Jeremy Bonderman is on the DL...which ailment has him out?

May 17, 2007  02:15 PM ET

I liked that somehow I did not get a closing argument...

May 17, 2007  09:22 PM ET

tigers = 2007 world series champs!!!!!!

May 17, 2007  09:51 PM ET

It looks like you posted the same argument 2x -- the second of which says it came from "my side" -- so that is why you got two instead of three...

As much as I always hate the overhyping of the Red Sox and/or Yankees, the Sox definitely seem to have a potent team this year all-around, and just about every team in the AL Central is in the race (besides KC), which will make it tough for the Tigers to even make the playoffs....
