Last night was an embarrassment to the Steelers organization and the NFL and they should force the Steelers to replace the field. Its been terrible for years and peaked last night.
The league is making hundreds of millions of dollars in profits and you have your athletes who are making millions out there playing on ground more chewed up than Gettysburg after Picketts Charge.
Its pathetic and the NFL needs to step in and do something about it.
You want to play a game? said 11/27, 09:12 AM
Agreed
But they won;t
Ever been to Phillys stadium? It was MILES behind Heinz feild on its WORST day- "like playing on painted concrete"
and the NFL never made them upgrade
part of the reason- what are they going to do?
Most teams don;t own the feild or the stadium- and lease agreements prevent them from saying "fine- Either replace the feild or we'll play at the other feild."
The NFL can bring pressure- but can;t do thing one about it-
Not to mention is can be considered homefeild advantage- knowing where the soft spots are and where the permanet divots are- Jerry Rice said one time he could draw a map of the feild and show where every drop of rain drained.

The NFL forced the Bengals to replace their field with Field Turf a few years ago, so obviously it can be done. I am sure that Goodell can bring the pressure to make the Steelers thing here.
They have Pitt playing there, and then 4 WPIAL playoff games over the weekend. No field can handle that. The NFL has too great an interest in the games and the health of their players to allow the Steelers to continue with this field.
You want to play a game? said 11/28, 01:41 AM
So how do you "force them" to do so?
Take a Draft Pick? Make them forfeit the game if the feild gets muddy?
It's FOOTBALL- Mud, Ice, Sleet,Fog- we playing the game- no matter the condition no matter how bad the feild gets - the game will be played.
This aint no pansy Baseball player gotta go inside causa the RAIN
MAN UP- Play the Game!
Pitt played on the SAME feild as Miami did- and WON.

How do they 'force' teams to wear certain brands? How do they force them to use proper safety gear? How do they force them to stay under the salary cap?
There are ways to force teams to do things, or every franchise would violate every rule set up by the league. I agree natural occurences are part of the game, but 6 games on 1 field in a weekend followed by 3 inches of sod being laid over the previous sod is not some natural occurence.

It stinks because they tried to re-sod it, but it blew up in their face with the rain and that they didn't give the sod enough time to settle. Hopefully this embarrassment will convince them to change the field.

I dont think the league will need to intervene. This is not a case of the owners beingt cheap. It was a good try. When the new stadium was built, the players, the Rooneys, the fans...everyone wanted that "real grass" experience. The team has actually done their best - they paid millions to have that quagmire installed for last night's game. I just wonder what they plan to do to get it ready for the Cincy game next week.
The grass might work if the stadium wasn't also used for all Pitt home games AND all the high school championship games. At a time of the season when grass is going into it's winter hibernation, increasing the number of games played is not the best idea.
It's time to go with field turf - it would actually benefit the Steelers offense, which is now a speed game with super fast guys like FWP and Santonio Holmes. I believe the Steelers will change the field of their own accord in their own best interests.

What an embarrassment both by to the organization (for the shoddy field conditions) and the team (by only being able to win by 3).
Hopefully the Steelers are on the road next week. Laying sod on sod looked to be a pretty bad idea that blew up in their faces.

And I don't want to hear that the field conditions justified why neither team could put up points. I don't expect the Dolphins to put up much offense anyway, but Pitt has a running game right???

Pitt hosts the Bungles next week. How can you run in that mess though?

The only players in that game last night with any advantage were pass rushers. It was impossible for any other player to cut or even to move. Looked like they were running in wet concrete.

If there hadn't of been a major storm, the field would have been just fine.

it rained, hardly major. Its not like there was a hurricane (ie the time the Steelers played the Dolphins 3 years ago in Ben's first start and there actually had been a hurricane and the field was in much better condition than last night).

wbcincy, i live right outside of pittsburgh it down poured from 10 p.m. sunday all the way until game time on monday. so it was a "marjor" down pour. the field was already bad after 4 wpial games and a pitt game. for some reason they thought they could replace all that sod in one day. they ended up just laying it on top of the old stuff creating major drainage problems or lack there of. and the field from 3 years ago was way worse. it was completely brown. quit looking for excuses as to why the bengals are going to lose on sunday.

How are you supposed to vote? They agree with each other.
Football is meant to be played on real grass...that wasn't the problem.
The problem was that there were more than 5 high school/college games, and the field got tore up. The real disaster was that they laid sod over sod the night before the game, then the cover leaked.
It's an NFL field...they shouldn't have let school teams ruin the turf

SteelCurtain, I'm confused, I live in Mt. Washington, go to Duquesne and am a lifetime Steeler fan who bleeds black and gold as much as anyone. Cincy is only in my title because I lived there for 6 years until I started school here this fall. I despise the Bengals with an unending passion from having lived there. I hate their bandwagon fans and their criminal players.
I know it rained for a while, but like I said, its not like there was flooding here in Pittsburgh or a state of emergency was called, it was just a day long rain. The fact that the WPIAAL playoffs and Pitt also play on the field means they need to have it replaced because they Steelers are always the last to play on it each week. They to lay sod because it was destroyed from the weekend, but thats a terrible solution as well. The only solution is to get field turf.

Wbcincy - I understand the argument you're trying to make... and why you're making it... but I can't vote for you. The playing field conditions last night were deplorable, and it happens to Heinz Field around this time every year. However, suggesting that the NFL would... or could... FORCE the Steelers to change the playing surface at Heinz Field goes a bit too far.
Am I the only one that remembers how eager everyone was to get the NFL players off of Three-Rivers Astroturf, and onto a natural playing surface? I'm sure that the Rooney family remembers that, too. Even the Steelers players are on record this morning, stating that they would rather keep the natural playing surface... once it dries out again.
However, Pitt officials installed an artifical surface for the Panthers' practice field, and are urging a change to field turf. Just last week, Steelers officials travelled to West Virgina University to inspect the Mountaineers' newly-installed playing surface... so an artificial field hasn't been completely ruled out...
For what it's worth, wbcincy, I'm not voting against you either. Your opponent hasn't made much of an argment.
