I'm assuming this topic is referring to so far this season. With that in mind I'm going to argue that the AFCN has had the best RB's so far this season.

3 out of the 4 starting (McGahee, Lewis, & Parker) RB's in the AFCN are in the top 11 in the entire NFL in rushing yds. (No other div. can claim this)

2 out of the 4 starters (McGahee & Parker) are in the top THREE (3) for rushing yards in the NFL (WOW, no other div. can claim this either)

2 out of the 4 (McGahee & Lewis) are in the top 7 in the league for rushing td's (this is unmatched also)

2 out of the 4 (McGahee & Lewis) are, in terms of TOTAL TD's (rushing & rec.) in the top 21 in the NFL including every other WR, TE, & RB.

Plus, out of the 9 RB's in that top 21, Lewis places 5th w/ 8 total TD's & McGahee places 8th w/ 7 total TD's.

Sure there are others in the league that have scored more total or rushing td's or have more rushing yards than these 3 top backs have, but the catch is this: There's not one division that has more than 1 or 2 at the very most ahead of these 3 guys in pretty much any crucial statistical category.

Lets look at the Full division shall we?

Take the Top 50 runners in the NFL

The Average rank by yards of the 6 RBs in the North (Jamal Lewis, Willis McGahee, Kenny Watson, Rudi Johnson, Willie Parker, Najeh Davenport) = 23.0

Average Rank in the NFC EAST (Marion Barber, Julius Jones, Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, Brian Westbrook, Clinton Portis) =19.0

Total TD in Both: 25

Dallas has two backs- Marion Barber and Julius Jones- that are ranked 13 and 32 The G-Men 2 headed Back are 13 and 37 and of course Westbrook is 4th and Portis is 7th

All 4 teams have backs that are better than 37th The North has 2 backs in the 40s

The East also run for more yards than the North

671.3 to 638.3 per game, they also have a better Average than the North- 4.5 to 4.1

Also the RBs have gained more First downs as a group 206 to 176 a pretty good margin there.

Hey Dave good #'s there and argument but you gotta keep a couple things in mind.

1. When you did the avg. rank by yards of the AFCN you included someone who has played on and off because of injuries to R.J. (Watson) and someone who doesn't really play much at all except around the goal line (Davenport). This isn't 100% comparing apples to apples because your AFC East guys you compared included 2 guys who split time (cowboys RB's) and a guy who's played alot due to injuries to Jacobs (Ward). None of the AFCN guys split time, all are starters or backups. I feel that's an advantage comparison-wise to the NFC East because of the guys splitting time and Ward playing so much because of Jacobs injury where a scenario like that isn't found in the AFCN right now.

2. The AFCN has 2 teams (Cle & Cin) that throw more than run. The NFC East has only one team that's like that (Phi) where the other three run the ball alot. This is why they're leading the AFCN in yards and just slightly in overall top 50 ranking. I also believe this is why there's a better rushing avg per game for the NFC East and more 1st downs as well.

Overall scoring between the two divisions is nearly identical too.

1. no in just included the top 50 backs by rushing yards in the NFL

2. It is STILL 6 on 6 between the 2 divisions

3. ok, I don;t understand this: "The AFCN has 2 teams (Cle & Cin) that throw more than run" If the div has such "great" runners as you say- then shouldn't they all run? One of three things happen when you pass, and two of them are bad- as they say

4.
AFCN
2 games over 500 2 teams at 4-7 best record 8-3

NFCE
10 games over 500 2 teams at 5-6 best record 10-1 (loss to the pats)

Better Div? Seems to me the NFC East easy.

1. You had to go outside the top 11 in in rushing to find more than 2 AFCE rushers. To find 3 out of the 4 AFCN starters I only had to look in the top 11 & if not for injuries Johnson would be in the top 10 or 15.

*The AFCE hasn't injury problems like the AFCN has & their #'s are almost identical w/ a slight edge to the AFCN if you compare all 8 starters.

*The only true receiving back in the NFCE is Westbrook. The AFCN has 2 excellent rec. RB's in Parker & McGahee.

2. The main RB's are the starters, they matter the most to these teams for W's.

3. The AFCN has great RB's but that doesn't mean that 2 of their offenses (Cin & Cle) have to change their philosophy of pass first, especially w/talented QBs.

Name one other NFCE QB who's been steady this season other than Romo. Theres none, this is why the NFCE has had to run the ball more for the most part, even PHI who usually throws alot more w/ Reid's offense (the only pass 1st offense in the NFCE).

Comparing overall W's is irrelevant b/c that includes total offense which includes passing, QB/WR play & not just rushing. You can't win with just running the ball, you have to pass so that argument is null & void IMO.

Of course I went top 50- I mean you talk about division you have to get some depth there-

Other wise I could state the AFC east has the best QBs WRs and the NFC North has the Best RBs - By virtue of Brady, Moss and AD

The NFL has used top 50 to shows stats and depth- as did I- and my average is STILL better than yours with a BETTER record

November 29, 2007  07:37 AM ET

I think the AFC North has the toughest division.

November 29, 2007  12:07 PM ET

wht about the afc west? it has the 2 best backs in the nfl, and before injury/suspension travis henry was the rushing leader. and currently jistin vargas is 12 in rushing

November 29, 2007  12:07 PM ET

Can't deny the facts..NFC north gets my vote

November 29, 2007  02:14 PM ET

East is more complete, vote to NC

November 29, 2007  02:55 PM ET

NCshvDavid makes interesting statistical arguments. Unfortunately, statistics are not always an acurate measurement. They can be misleading, based on the sample set selected... and this sample pool is obviously disputable. What is being measured is disputable as relevant. I haven't seen an argument from either, based on the most relevant RB statistic... yards-per-carry. NCshvDavid lost me when he made arguments based on overall division records.

We're measuring RB ability... not division records. The only consideration for team records realizing that, at 4-7, the Ravens and Bengals are throwing more to play catch-up. Of course that is going to impact their RB numbers... although it doesn't seem to hurt McGahee. Doesn't that tell you something? Point to #18 fan

AFC North has all around better backs

November 29, 2007  05:14 PM ET

I dont think anybody voted for NC's arguments, just against loud mouth Reed. Vote that way.

November 30, 2007  09:02 AM ET

The division that has McGahee and Parker will win everytime unless we go into a time machine when Larry Johnson was still a force. Then maybe a case can be made for Johnson and LT

November 30, 2007  09:59 AM ET

been there, Reed stated that the North was the harder division-

that is why I used records to prove him wrong.

November 30, 2007  10:44 AM ET

dave go back and read all 3 of my arguments I never once state that the AFCN is harder than the NFC East, not one single time.

December 1, 2007  07:50 PM ET

Ed Reed wins this TD for the TD League due to Dave not responding in the time period. It's been over 2 days, as of right now... Congrats to Ed Reed, and I'm sorry, Dave.
