In his first year in Houston, Matt Schaub will not be better than David Carr was in his years with Houston.

A lot has been made about Matt Schaub's trade from the Falcons to the Texans. Personally, I do not think that Schaub will be able to produce in Houston in the next two years. First off, even though he played in all 16 games in his last two seasons in Atlanta, he never saw significant action, with only two starts. Secondly, he is playing behind almost the exact same offensive line that David Carr played behind. Schaub is a little bit more mobile than Carr, but he can't escape from traffic as well as some other quarterbacks. This will hinder Schaub's career for a few years. However, I am not predicting him to be a bust with Houston. I think he can really get it going and eventually be the franchise QB. I just think his first few years in Houston will be rough.

Schaub enters in a much better situation than Carr did. he has the benefit of being around the NFL longer and having a better knowledge of the game. Houston's D is really getting better. Also, houston will have a much better run game with their off season pick-ups.

It's still Houston. They are getting better, but everyone thought they would improve under Carr too. In 2004, the Texans finished 7-9 and in third place and everyone thought they were going to get better, but the next year they finished 2-14. My real point of this is Schaub. He has been around the league longer and has a better understanding, but he is in the same point of his career where Carr quarterbacked the 2-14 season. The supporting cast has gotten better, with a better running game and wide receivers, but the main point is the offensive line. They may have gotten a little better, but David Carr was still a tackling dummy last year. Through his first season, Schaub will have to suffer through the same fate until some more help is brought in. I am just arguing about his first year. He will not be the savior some Houston fans envision.

The line has greatly improved. Schaub will do nicely coming out of his back up role because Houston now has weapons for him to use. also, Carr never had a chance to see how good he was. Schaub has done very well in what little playing time he's had. so there is the possiblity that Carr never was that good to begin with.

We still do not know how good Schaub is. I remember him almost beating the Patriots in one of his only starts, but that was about two years ago. He has been hyped for a while now and hasnt shown his true skill set yet. It will take time for him to develop, so this first year, this is what this throwdown is about, will be on par with Carr's years. Schaub has to learn the new system and get settled in. I'm not saying he's doomed for the future. I want to see him do well, but this year, I do not see him leading Houston out of the cellar. Third place maybe overtaking Jacksonville, but Tennessee and Indianapolis will have the top. In closing, I want to see Schaub have a good career and bring Houston out of the cellar, but I do not see him having that good of a year THIS year.

in the two years since the near pats win, he most certainly got better. he has had plenty of developing time, and has a great skill set. the Falcons had no weapons (other than Alge) for him. Vick only made up for that by running. Houston has Andre Johnson to throw to and a newly refurbished run game to ease Matt's load. it is not the same team Carr went to. it's much better. so, in turn, Matt will do much better. that's all there is to it.

He will not be the savior immediately.

Schaub's weaknesses will be exposed when he becomes an every day QB.

May 16, 2007  05:30 PM ET

Carr had the misfortune of playing behind one of the worst O-lines in history. Put Schuab in Carr's place and you get the same results. Fact is Houston ruined Carr! Will they now ruin Schuab? A QB will not succeed in Houston until they fix the O-line problems!!!

May 16, 2007  05:30 PM ET

he won't be that bad.

May 16, 2007  05:38 PM ET

NO O-LINE NO QB, why would anybody think that he would do anybetter, even if the D is better, who going t o protect him????

May 16, 2007  05:38 PM ET

Carr was the victim of an inept personnel staff and the worst O-line in recent history. Schaub will benefit from a better D and running game. He will certainly not fail like Carr in his rookie year.

May 16, 2007  05:46 PM ET

If Carr was a rookie now not then going onto the Texans team I'd take Carr over Schaub! With the teams current line compared to the teams line Carr's rookie year!!

May 16, 2007  06:03 PM ET

Even Brett cannot be effective without the protection of hard playing, determined offensive linemen. Schaub will do ok, but he will not turn this franchise around in 1 year. More free agents and more drafts picks will only do that.

I don't know...i've always liked Carr (he is from BAKERSFIELD just like me!) honestly i feel the team never gave him the offensive support it could have and being the most sacked qb in the NFL while he played is almost an impossible situation to play in...And throughout it all Carr never complained and always tried his best, so i wish him the best in Carolina...I hope he actually beats out Delhomme for the starting job...as for Schaub...there is not much to say about him because he hasn't done anything. He's looked great...in PRESEASON games but what about regular season?

dgal has a much better argument.

which is?

May 16, 2007  09:08 PM ET

Even if you have the biggest **** in the world, if your game can't get you into bed with a girl, it doesn't matter. If Schaub can't throw it, there will be no stats. After being hit that much, he will be more prone to scrambling and he will be jittery and throw off his back foot, ruinging his throws like Eli Manning does sometimes.

That's a pretty random comment. This is the best Throwdown I've been in so far. Thanks for giving me a challenge.
