The NFL should conduct their overtime and play reviews like college. It would make for more fair games and speed the games up too.
This is not the Pimp you want said 12/03, 07:51 AM
No WAY
have you seen LSU? they have completely tore up thier season by having to go to triple OT in 2 games-
a 10-0-2 vs a 10-2 record normally would mean a high teir non BCS bowl in most years.
I prefer the NFL- winner take all first person to score wins-
In the NCAA you don;t have the sticky D you have in the NFL- yet almost every team has a Kicker than can hit from 40+ You would see OT become kicking contests if they used the College OT in the NFL
You might see a 87-90 game with about 23 overtimes- and games could go another 2 hours
THREE DOLLAR BILL, Y'ALL said 12/03, 07:56 AM
OK, but the way NFL overtime is set up is the winner is usually decided by a coin toss. Thats ridiculous. You can be the away team, get the ball in the 1st overtime get a decent runback and pound a 50+ yard feildgoal without effort. The way its played in college gives the teams equal opportunities. I dont believe the games would go on forever like college (you know like 3 OT games and such), because you always see more scoring in college games and they are basically like shootouts. The NFL doesnt have enough OT to worry about the fact that it could increase game length. You also didnt state your opinion on conducting play reviews like college does.

Man I hate it when the Facts get in the way- don't you?
From 1974-2003 complied by Science News online
http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20041106/mathtrek.asp
Total no. of overtime games (1974???2003) 365
Both teams had at least one possession 261 (72 %)
Team won toss and won game 189 (52 %)
Team lost toss and won game 160 (44 %)
Team won toss and drove for winning score 102 (28 %)
Games ending in a tie 15 (5 %)
only in 28% of the time did the team who won the toss go on the win on that FIRST drive - meaning in 72% of the games the other team DID get the ball with a chance to score
Keep in mind this is over a 30 year span - pretty good span of data
THREE DOLLAR BILL, Y'ALL said 12/03, 08:29 AM
OK,it also says 52% won toss won game. Thats 1/2 games. In the NFL there is always alot of the refs made a bad call here or that play shouldnt stand. So say a ref makes a bad call against your team which sets the other team up to win. You know for a fact that the play was no good but it doesnt matter because you just lost by a field goal. BUT, if you play college style, it gives you a chance regain what was just taken from you unfairly. It basically wipes out the people who whine that they lost because of bad refs or calls because it gives you a chance to strike back. Also your stats are from 1974-2003, it may have changed from then to now. Your using stats that are 4 years old. Also as far as challenges and play reviews in the NFL should also be done like in college. Instead of having the ref run across the field to look in a box like the NFL, college automatically reviews after every play and then makes the call down to the ref is it is being debated. This cuts down the time it takes to review and therefor dowsnt stop the game as long. Its more efficent. The NFL should also do that. (I stated this in my opening argument and you havent given an opinion yet).
This is not the Pimp you want said 12/03, 08:50 AM
ok let me break it down a little bit for you- You seem to have missed something
Team won toss and then scored on opening drive I.E "we want the ball and we will score" 28%
Thats it- 72% of the time the other team got the ball
the 52% is the team winning the toss winning PERIOD- if two teams are TIED after 60 minutes don;t that normally mean they are pretty evenly- say 52% matched?
Point 2
You stated that giving each team the ball negates bad calls- really so If the refs make a bad call and the team I am playing scores it don;t count because I have a chance?
ask a Seattle Fan how that worked out in the Super Bowl
ask ANY fan if one call ever got balanced out becase they got the next possesion- that is not real life- you can have a bad call in the 1st Q cost you a game JUST as easy as one in the 4th (ask the Colts)
Bad Calls are a nature of the game and even replay is NOT perfect we had several calls this year go VERY wrong even with replay
no to mention the fact that the BIGGEST call of all- pass interferance- this call can give you the biggest chunk of yardage in the NFL
and is NOT reviewable under either sytem- and I don;t like unlimited challanges

David will win this in a landslide
College ball OT is stupid, way too easy to go to multiple OT's if u both get an opp
Sudden death, defense and offense both need to step up

Report Offensive Commentcompletely agree with jhartle on this. I hate the idea that a well played game by both teams can be decided on a 50/50 chance coin flip at the end. Forget sticking your game MVP out there to call it in the air, you need your best coin caller. The last time I checked they didn't test coin calling in the combine and people don't go to pro-bowls for calling the best flip. Its rediculous.

Report Offensive CommentThe winner isnt usually decided by a coin toss by the way in the pro's
Usually each team gets the ball and if so, who cares???? Your defense needs to step up

Report Offensive CommentI would like to see a combination. Give each team the ball on the 40. If its still tied after that, then flip a coin and first to score wins.

Report Offensive CommentWhat is the diff between scoring on the last play of regulation or the first play of overtime?
You still lose
And with the winning flipper winnnig 52% of the time overall not that big a deal stat wize.
and 4 year old data still covers THIRTY years and 365 games - how many OT games do we have a year? 2 ? 3 at the most- so 4 year old data will add what 10 games to the THREE HUNDRED SIXTY FIVE counted-
Not that big a difference.

Report Offensive CommentThe college ovetime is great. Give both teams a shot. In the NFL, a team can get a good runback on the kick in overtime. Then all it takes is a couple good plays to hit a long field goal. I have see to many great games decided on the person with the ball first. I really wish they would make it even and let them other team get a shot to.
I agree that the defense has to step up but I don't like the fact that if your team has played lights out all game and then gives up a big play at the end your done without even a chance to redeme yourself.
Why dont we just play a best out of 3 paper-rock-scissors instead.

Report Offensive CommentNot only fix the OT, but give the referees more leniency w/ instant replays....in other words, do away with the "inadvertent whistle", the "forward progress was stopped" and the "player fumbled the football but possession couldn't be determined".
There should be some sort of common sense rule that applies to replays...for example though, yesterday, some QB (can't remember the game but I want to say it was Giants v Bears) got stripped of the ball and the opposing defense clearly recovered it in the replay. Challenge flag thrown, reviewed, and refs said "yeah it was a fumble but we couldn't determine who recovered it and by rule the ball stays with the offense as an incomplete pass". 1 frickin guy fell on the ball....how was it not clear?

Report Offensive CommentOK hartle, yousaid that the team that won the toss won half the games (52%). I'd say that's statistically obvious. A team has two choices - heads or tails. They have statistically a 50% chance of winning the toss, and the toss winners win half the games. Well, duh!
And in case you missed this: 2+2=4

Report Offensive CommentThe College overtime is a joke. The special teams are a non factor except for the kicking game. At least in the NFL, the special teams are involve in overtime. Both the NFL and college need to change the overtime.
I propose that both teams will get the ball. No time clock will be used in overtime. Meaning someone will win or lose. To start overtime, teams will kickoff. If the score is tied after each team gets the ball, then the next team that scores wins. This will take effect on both college and the NFL.
