NFL Tourney Week 2 Best TE by RANK

Top 5 as of 12/4/07

1. Kellen Winslow CLE 2nd in Receptions, 1st in yards and Yards per game, 7th in TDs and 4th in first down catches

2. Antonio Gates SD Weak Qb but still 4th in Receptions, 3rd in Yards and Yards per game, 2nd in TDs and 3rd in 1st down catches

3. Tony Gonzalez KC 1st in Receptions, 2nd in Yards and yards per game but slips due to beings 8th in TDS

4. Jason Witten 3rd in Receptions, 4th in Yards, yards per game and in TDS but only 14th in first down receptions

5. Chris Cooley 7th in Receptions, Yards, yards per game, and in First down catches but is 3rd in TDS

1. Jason Witten

Witten is T-2nd in REC, 4th YDs, 4th in YPG, T-4th in TDs, and 3rd in 1stD. Witten may not have the most REC, YDs, or TDs, but he combines his elite receiving with his ability to block. Balance.

2. Kellen Winslow

Winslow is T-2nd in REC, 1st in YDs, 1st in YDs Per Game, T-5th in TDs, 1st in YPC, and T-1st in 1stD. Winslow is here because he is arguably the most dangerous receiving TE in the NFL. Without Winslow, the Browns offense probably doesnt look as good as it does.

3. Tony Gonzalez

Gonzalez is 1st in REC, 2nd in YDs, 2nd in YPG, T-6th in TDs, and T-1st in 1stD. Gonzalez probably could make a case for himself about the NFL's best receiving TE against Winslow. The only difference, Winslow beats him in both categories for yardage and then in touchdowns.

4. Antonio Gates

Gates is 3rd in REC, 3rd in YDs, 3rd in YPG, 1st in TDs, 2nd in YPC, and 2nd in 1stD. Both Gates/Gonzalez have QB issues, but, the reason Gates is at #4 is because he's behind Gonzalez in REC, YDS, and YPG.

5. Jeremy Shockey

Shockey is T-4th in REC, 6th in YDs, 6th in YPG, and T-7th in TDs. He's over Cooley because he's better in REC, YDS, YPG, and YPC.

% of catches for first down Witten is 14th at 58.5% The reason why he has so many is half his catches move the chains. Kellen Winslow on the other hand moves the chains on 70.8% of his catches Heath Miller is first at 75.7%- a monster rate for a ball control offense.

My error in not putting % in the above arguement.

Shockey ranks 16th in 1st down %

Cooley moves the chains almost 9% of the time more with his catches than Shockey does

and the difference between the two is 1 catch for 13 yards for Jeremy but Chris has 4 more TD's and like I said a much better 1st down %

1 more catch and 13 more yards is not going to make up for 4 more TDs at any rate.

I understany why you have Winslow at number one. He is easily the best receiving TE statistically in the NFL.

What I'm shooting for here by placing Jason Witten not only ahead of Winslow, but also at the #1 spot is something that isnt seen in the stats for a TE. Witten is an exceptional blocking TE. A TE has a dual responsibilty to block on the line in both pass protection and run, and then of course; run routes in an effective way to get 1st downs and more. THAT is EXACTLY what Jason Witten is good for. He's a balanced TE for the Cowboys. THAT is why I put him ahead of everyone else on my list.

Cooley takes a few stats over Shockey, and Shockey takes a few stats over Cooley. Take your pick.

As far as Gonzalez and Gates...Gates gets more TD's, but, Gonzalez beats him in REC, YDS, YPG, and 1stD. That is why I placed Gonzalez ahead of Gates. That, and I'd take Rivers over Huard or Croyle any day. Gonzalez has done more in more statistical categories on a worse off offense.

Ok- I;m going with this again

"Cooley takes a few stats over Shockey, and Shockey takes a few stats over Cooley. Take your pick. "

ok I will I'll take the guy with 4 MORE td's over the guy with one more catch and 13 more yards.

I cannot understand how you rate that higher by ANY means- one catch for 13 years is nice but the name of the game for a tight end- actually any player is to move the chains first and foremost and get the ball into that paint at the end of the feild-

step 1- Cooley moves the chains 9% more often on his catches that is a HUGE number considering neither player is excatly playing for the Pats and Colts here.

Step 2 - pretty easy- 4 more TDs- over TWICE as many Tds this year 7 to 3

Cooley is a MUCH better TE than Jeremy this year- and considering that the giants are 15th in the NFL in offense and the Skins are 17th.
