The Houston Texans are the best 5-7 team in the NFL right now

Gates' Bodyguard (0-2-0) vs Bigalke (134-41-16)

The Phillidelphia Eagles, with help from the Brian's, look to be the best 5-7 team out there. With an injury to Donovan the team isn't looking forward to the rest of the schedule. With a good looking, intense, defense and Westbrook carrying the team on his back the Eagles are my pick for the best 5-7 team today

Arguing the best 5-7 teams is like arguing the best strains of the flu: it is all fun and games until you are stuck with 'em. But, seeing as Sr. Bodyguard has taken the Eagles, I feel it is in my duty to argue for the topic team, the Houston Texans.

With a young defensive core starring DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams, and an exciting offense led by Falcons castoff Matt Schaub (the best backup in the NFL over the past three seasons finally getting his starting chance) and Pro Bowler Andre Johnson, this Texans team is far better than their 5-7 record indicates. They have played tight games against division rivals Indianapolis and Tennessee and could easily be 7-5 right now. They play in the toughest division in the AFC and have nothing but upside.

Whereas Philly is getting older (McNabb and Westbrook won't last forever), the Texans are a team gaining valuable experience as it learns how to create a winning environment.

Yes, I put Houston down first and never changed the top, stupid of me, however when looking at the numbers I saw that Philadelphia is a better team, here's why:
Defense
Eagles are 12th overall, 9th in rushing, 19th in passing (One of the best defensive coordinators in the game, Jimmy Johnson)
Texans are 21st overall, 25th in rushing, 16th in passing

now these defenses haven't had any changes with injuries to cause anymore argument, so these numbers are very solid.

Offensively the Eagles are 5th overall, 11th in rushing and 12th in passing
Houston looks to be where they should, due to injury to johnson and schuab, at 9th overall, 23rd in rushing and 6th in passing.

NUMBERS DON'T LIE!

VOTE COLT BRENNAN FOR HEISMAN!

As I said below in the comments, if Green Bay were 5-7 I would probably be voting them as the best 5-7 team... just as I crowed to anyone I could find that they were the best 4-8 team last year at the three-quarter point. It is highly unlikely that either Houston or Philadelphia are going to make the playoffs... so we need to evaluate from the standpoint of who will make the greater leap next season, I would think...

On that basis, it becomes readily apparent that the Eagles will almost certainly be much weaker next season. McNabb will undoubtedly be headed out of town... and the defense, while Johnson has done an admirable job keeping it effective, continues to get older with no significant new parts. Unless they shore up that issue, they are destined to remain mid-pack NFC...

Houston, on the other hand, has a young defense that continues to come together. Injuries have blighted the Texans offense, and a healthy Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson will serve to make the unit much better as they gain comfort in the system. A running back still is needed -- Ahman Green doesn't look to stop getting injured -- but can be easily remedied. Houston will make more of a leap next season.

who cares about next year these teams aren't thinking about next year, even though they probably should. but with football players they never quit both teams want to win out and end on a positive note. andy reid is doing a great ob for what the kids at home, or in jail, are doing. for the here and now, the eagles are the best 5-7 team in the league.

what a stupid throwdown but i thought a friend would pick denver and he denied it, because he knew i was right.

Once teams either have their postseason spot locked up or guaranteed not to come, it is natural to begin looking forward to next season. Crowning a 5-7 team as the best reeks of the macabre, but it must be done here... as I did take the challenge.

Further, I was bold enough to take the topic AS WRITTEN and at least give an argument for its veracity. For a team that has nothing except four more games where they have the potential to play spoiler, all there really is to look forward to is the hope of next season. The Texans have an offense that, once healthy next season, should on paper be much better than a Philly team slated to lose its franchise QB. With young defensive studs like Williams and Ryans, the Texans are growing together into a unit that looks more formidable than the Eagles' defense, and are younger to boot.

Of course an athlete wants to win every one... that is what they get paid to do, and what they have tried to do since childhood. I would be more likely to expect Houston than Philadelphia to have a Green Bay-like turnaround next season. And, in the end, isn't it future success that defines quality for those who can't have success right now?

First you said that the Texans are the best then you said the Eagles are the best. That's messed up

trust me... if the Green Bay Packers were 5-7 right now I would be extolling their virtues as the best of the sorry lot... just as I was last season when they were 4-8 at this point...

The numbers DO lie. The Texans were terrible without Andre Johnson, but now that he's back, they are way, way better than the piteous Eagles offense. Other than their 56 points against DETROIT, they are horrible, and they have the same record against their division (3-6) that the Texans do. Oh, and by the way, if the Texans didn't play the Jags, Colts, and Titans TWICE, then they would probably be 7-5. The Cowboys are a little better than the Colts, but Washington and New York can't run with the Titans (with Haynsworth) and the Jags. Also, Donovan McNabb is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. They should release his sorry ****.

Vote to Zack Bigalke for actually arguing the TD. The other guy said he didn't care and then started talking about Colt Brennan.

The Texans are a better 5 and 7 team than the Eagles because unlike Philadelphia the Texans know who their QB will be next season.

eagles almost beat the patriots, that's gotta count for something. defense wins championships, brian westbrook for MVP

December 7, 2007  06:21 PM ET

the numbers are where they should be, the texans have the 6th best passing game, that's where they should be, that's the only ranking that could differ because people have been hurt. 6th is a good ranking for them for how other teams are passing the ball this year, eagles are still a better team, better coached team as well

i talked to antonio gates just now and he told me that he agrees with my throwdown and that the chargers would kill both teams
