And maybe even in the top 3.

I can't figure out why everyone keeps on turning this position down.

Unless you coach for USC, Ohio State, or Notre Dame, this would be a step up.

If you have a career, your #1 priorty should be progressing to be the best in your field.

Southern Cal
Texas
LSU
Ohio State
Florida

These are the top 5 jobs. All are traditional football schools, all but Ohio State are in desirable climates, all are in or near hot recruiting territory, all pay HUGE bucks for coaches and all can guarantee a player exposure.
Michigan is still a big time program but no longer top 5. They aren't getting the big time recruits the once did yet the expectations are the same. This is a risky job for a prospective coach right now!

Others equal to or above Michigan: Alabama, Penn State, Auborn and Notre Dame (although I don't know why)

History tells us that only Notre Dame (11) and USC (10) are the only 2 schools that have more players that MI (7) in the the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

If I were a young football prospect, I would want to go to a school who such statistics.

Recruiting for the next MI coach should be a breeze due to the high turnover of NFL Draft picks. I can't recall the last year a MI player was not sent to the NFL in the 1st round.

Webster says:
History - noun; The branch of knowledge that records and analyzes past events; Something that belongs to the past.

A young rospect wants to go to a school will:
- get him drafted into the NFL
- contend for a national championship
- use pro style offences and defenses
- has an innovative coach
other considerations might be location and academics (hopefully)

Michigan has had 1 (one) player taken in the first round in the last two drafts. None in 2006 and one, cornerback Leon Hall to the Begals with the 18th pick in 2007. The only Big Ten team that continues to place players in the first round is Ohio State and the SEC dominates the first round.

The top recruits are not going to Michigan, coaches know it. They don't pay as well as the schools I have mentioned and it's freezing in Ann Arbor during football season!

Who wouldn't want to coach for the school with the most wins and highest winning percentage in the NCAA history (I know you hate that word)?

That has to count for something.

Why would I hate that "statement" not word? I have no vested interest in the matter. I am baseball guy first and foremost and as far as college goes, I follow UNC. UNC football sucks most of the time, we are a basketball school. The ONLY reason I have any interest in the BIG Ten is because my father-in-law is an OSU alum and it's in my best interest! lol
Sorry, this isn't personal for me.

Tradition and history are important, especially to fans and alumni but to a prospective coach, they are like a garnish. They make a great dish look even better.

All the facts I have presented are true and apparently they are having an effect on the Michigan search for a big name coach. If not, then YOU explain why they are having difficulty.

Alabama had a vacancy and Saban leaves the NFL. LSU had no difficulty replacing Saban. Carroll has turned down the 14-2 Chargers to stay at USC. You couldn't throw Mack Brown out of Texas. Oklahoma and Florida never have a vacancy too long.
Michigan needs to hire a young innovative coach that runs a modern pro style spread offense so they can lore the more athletic prospects and get away from the tired old Big Ten grind it out style?

I can't argue this but if its a Top 3 as you say vacancy, then their must be something wrong the the program if everyone keeps turning it down. And all the coaches they are going after, they have a top 25 team their coaching right now and why leave when they can do so much more.

December 7, 2007  12:27 PM ET

Not a step up... Michigan is a good program. Not great. Not the most elite or prestigious coaching gig in the NCAA. People are probably turning it down because of several reasons and in no order they are, 1) $$$ 2) AD Influence and control 3) environment and other reasons that are personal to each potential coach. I'd put Michigan about #10-12 on my "places I'd most like to coach" list.

December 7, 2007  12:32 PM ET

Going to vote for the Coach. At one point Michigan was a top 3 program but not anymore. Mediocrity has set in at Ann Arbor and other programs have shot past.

December 7, 2007  12:34 PM ET

If I had to do a top three:

1. Notre Dame
2. U.S.C.
3. Oklahoma

Those are all desirable jobs. If Charlie Weis, Pete Carroll, or Bob Stoops were to leave those jobs coaches would be fighting each other to land one of those spots.

December 7, 2007  12:37 PM ET

oops I did forget Oklahoma.
I am not sure Notre Dame is a top 5 job anymore either. Weiss is an alum and had ellusions of bringing back the magic. Outside coaches would think twice as recruiting isn't easy and expectations are also unreasonable. The only thing that is a draw is the HUGE cash N.D. is willing to pay.

December 7, 2007  12:39 PM ET

If Michigan is so great they would offer their coaches top dollar to get them where they want to be. Michigan still thinks they are @ the head of the class, and they don't have to offer big time bucks to big time coaches. I mean when a coach @ Rutgers....RUTGERS for gods sake turns you down, you know you have hit a rough spot in the road.

December 7, 2007  12:39 PM ET

I would say that the Ohio State and Michigan jobs are about the same as the Oklahoma and Texas jobs, AMAZING PLACE to coach if you can beat your rival. If not, get your resume ready.

#1- Penn State
#2- Florida State (these two will let you coach FOREVER!)
#3- Hawaii (You get to live in Hawaii)

Just a different spin

December 7, 2007  12:42 PM ET

LSU does not rate above Michigan as a prime coaching job. If it was, then we wouldn't have had Nick Saban walking way from Baton Rouge and all the talk of Les Miles possibly doing the same. For most of its history, LSU football has been a second-tier program. It has achieved its greatest success, by far, in the last five years.

Although Michigan has been sliding lately, it has the tradition, fan base, and resources to return quickly to elite status with the right coach. If it's not a Top 5 job, it's pretty close.

December 7, 2007  12:43 PM ET

Hawaii?!? I agree with the residence but not a premier coaching job, at least not yet. Besides, the travel alone will kill ya! lol

December 7, 2007  12:47 PM ET

Saban went to the pros and if I am not mistaken, Miles went no where and just extended until 2012. He used Michigan to get a raise. How many championships has Michigan contended for lately? LSU has one in 03 under Saban, will play for another this year and is in the running nearly every year.

December 7, 2007  12:47 PM ET

true but you only have to gameplan for DII schools, and DI schools that are flat out awful. So you can enjoy Hawaii

December 7, 2007  12:48 PM ET

I was kinda going off prestige Coach but I can see your point about the Irish. But, if Weis leaves and someone comes in and turns the whole thing around he would be treated like a God. That's why I put Notre Dame as the number one job.

December 7, 2007  12:48 PM ET

MOH

ND is no longer a top school to coach at

Parity

December 7, 2007  12:49 PM ET

LMAO if Hawaii beats Georgia, 42-14 and gets National title

Fitting end to a crazy season

December 7, 2007  12:49 PM ET

Truthfully a coaching position is what you make of it, Florida wasn't a good job at all before Spurrier, USC wasn't anything to write home about before Carrol. Ohio State had seen better days before Tressell. BYU, SMU, Houston, UCLA all used to be hot spots, and you can add ND to that list as well.

December 7, 2007  12:51 PM ET

J Hova Weis did turn the program around, just in the wrong direction. They let Willingham go too fast and they are keeping this fool around too long.

December 7, 2007  12:52 PM ET

I hear ya J Hova but I don't think anyone is going to turn it around and I believe the top notch coaches know that. It isn't the glamour place to play anymore and kids are going elsewhere. To their credit, they have lofty academic standards but that eliminates a hoard of talent too.

"Saban went to the pros and if I am not mistaken, Miles went no where and just extended until 2012. He used Michigan to get a raise. How many championships has Michigan contended for lately? LSU has one in 03 under Saban, will play for another this year and is in the running nearly every year."

The Throwdown addresses the "Top 5 coaching jobs," not the "Top 5 Teams in the BCS as of December 7, 2007," much less a list of the last 5 teams to win national titles.

In my view, the ranking of a NCAA football coaching job is based on cumulative tradition, fan base, and facilities and resources. By those measures, Michigan still easily ranks ahead of LSU.

That said, another five or 10 years of subpar football will knock them down several more notches.

December 7, 2007  01:01 PM ET

Yeah Weis was pretty impressive winning with Willinghams recruits, and even though Weis had the #1 recruiting class, it hasn't paid off yet. I guess we will see next year.

Just like in those NCAA football video games LoL.
