SIFS- Round 1- Which team outside of the top 10 in the AP poll has the best chance at a Final Four run?

I will be choosing Texas A&M. My reasoning? To start off, they have decent depth. 7 players average 20+ minutes and each of those guys average at least 7 points per game so they definitely spread the ball around. The Aggies have a forceful center in freshman DeAndre Jordan. I saw him play in the NIT and I was impressed to say the least. Currently, he's averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds and he's only getting better.

Next is their schedule. It hasn't been treacherous, but they've had tough games against Ohio State, Washington, and #21 Arizona. Thirdly is A&M's experience. Let's not forget that many of them were part of the run to the Sweet 16 that they had last March. Joseph Jones (12 pts, 5 reb), Josh Carter (13 pts, 2 ast, 5 reb), Donald Sloan (9 pts, 3 ast, 4 reb), and Dominique Kirk (8 pts, 4 ast, 3 reb) all logged considerable minutes on that team. So you can add experience to that list.

Also worth mentioning is this team's shooting. Jordan is shooting 80% FROM THE FIELD and Joseph Jones is making 59% of his attempts from the field. They have some decent outside shooters as well. Kirk is shooting 53% from deep, Roland is 47%, and Carter is 39%. This team is good.

Although I am sure that you have already made an argument against them, I will say Pitt.
They have had a fairly tough schedule thus far, with wins at Duquesne and at Washington, and a thumping of Oklahoma State tonight at home. And Duquesne may not be a top school, but that is still a very good win in a heated rivalry.
Pitt also has very good depth, with six players averaging over 20 minutes per game. Four of those players average double digit points per game, with the other two scoring at least six each. Their dominant freshman, Dejaun Blair, is a force inside the paint, possibly better than Jordan. He averages 11 points and 9 rebounds per game, along with over one block per game and about two and a half steals per. He shoots 55 percent from the field. He also shoots 82 percent form the line, compared to Jordan's 31.
One huge and underrated stat is free throw percentage, Hitting a good amount, and hitting them in the clutch is very important when March Madness rolls around. Pittsburgh hits a very good 72 percent, while Texas A&M hits only 59 percent, which is very bad for a team as good as them.
Pittsburgh plays much better defense, averaging 8.8 steals per game, to A&M's 4.4.

Pitt's schedule is nothing compared to A&M's. Duquesne=average. Washington=maybe a little above average. Who did they play after that? Houston Baptist, North Carolina A&T, Mississippi Valley State. Their schedule is the definition of a cupcake schedule. We'll see just how good they really are on Thursday against Duke.

Now, DeJuan Blair is good, but he has no experience whatsoever, similar to Jordan. That's why you need some upperclassmen leading the team. This team's leader was Aaron Gray last season. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocks. One of the biggest factors of the Panthers' success so far has been Sam Young, yet he played 17 minutes a game last year and averaged a paltry 7 points and 3 rebounds. Can he really step up? His worse game to date was the one against their toughest opponent, Washington.

Weak schedule? Check.
No true leader? Check.
Final Four bound? I don't think so.

A&M already has guys stepping up and filling the leadership roles that Acie Law IV left. Joseph Jones has been fantastic and a true team player. He's been doing whatever it takes for his team to pull out a victory. I will tell more about that in my next argument.

They have had a weak schedule thus far compared to A&M, but they have done a great job blowing through it. Oklahoma State is a solid win, and they blew them out. There is nothing wrong with playing the better non conference teams at the end of the non conference schedule, it is actually smart.
Although the loss of Aaron Gray is big, he was not able to display leadership skills all of the time. In fact, the Panthers were able to win many games in spite of him when he would fall apart. And Sam Young may have not played much last year, but he has done a great job stepping in as the leader of this Pittsburgh team, just as Jones as done for A&M. Young also has a great supporting cast with Ramon, Levance Fields, and Mike Cook.
People say that defense wins championships. Well, there aren't many teams in college basketball with the defensive skills that Pitt has. They have held four teams under 53 points. Gray was great at blocking shots, but Blair has stepped in as the offensive and defensive presence that Gray was. He had five blocks against Oklahoma State, and he has been getting better and better over the last few games.
The offense is damn good too, averaging 82 points per game.

Oklahoma State is 5-4 with a loss against...North Texas. How solid of a win can that be? The point of my stating they have a weak schedule is simply to prove that you can't tell if they are a Final Four caliber team or not. I think the game against Duke on Wednesday will be a very good barometer for how good they'll be this season.

Regarding the 'defense wins championships' thing, it's true some of the time but not ALWAYS. The 2004-05 NCAA Champion UNC Tar Heels outscored their opponents by an average score of 88-70. So much for great defense, huh? By the way, the Aggies' last game finished with a score of 64-37 in favor of them. That's good defense. A&M has held their opponents to less than 55 points a grand total of four times in 10 games this season. More good defense.

Our offense is averaging pretty close to Pitt's as well, with 78 points per game. But let's not forget, the schedule that each play factors into all these nice-looking stats for Pitt.

Now, I can't tell when the non-conference schedule ends for Pitt, but I'm pretty sure it would be Jan. 2nd. To finish it off, they have a tough game against Duke, an average game against Dayton, and an easy vs. Lafayette.

I'll be honest, I only have a few minutes to do this and I will make this quick. It looks like I will lose it anyway. So:
These are two very good teams, and I could honestly see either one of these teams making the Final Four. If Pitt is able to beat Duke on Thursday(it is on the 20th I think) then there will be no doubt that they deserve talk as a top team. The advantage that Pitt has is that they have not faltered against an inferior team. Texas A&M was hot, and they fell apart against an average Arizona team. Pitt has played well enough to stay undefeated. A&M has had a tougher schedule, but they should be undefeated like Pitt is. They were better than every team that they played, and they just weren't consistent enough to beat Arizona.
If Pitt can beat Duke, they would have a ton of confidence going into the Big East games, with the only team better than them being Georgetown, who have also failed to beat any top-notch teams.
To make a late run into March, you must be consistent and play well enough to win every night. Pitt has done that, and A&M hasn't. They both have good defenses, I should have given them credit for that as well. Pitt has hit needed shots and free throws.

I really like this topic. It should be a good one. Good luck, Bigdleech.

i remember that philly.
thats when they had jameer nelson and he was going crazy

Report Offensive Comment

Jameer Nelson and Delonte West formed a crazy-good backcourt that year. I was somewhat upset that they lost so early on as well. I expected more. Of course, I was even more livid when Duke (as a #1 seed) lost to LSU in the Sweet 16 during JJ and Shelden's senior years.
