Best Punt Returner in the AFC this year

I'm going to have to go with Roscoe Parrish of the Bills.

This year, on 22 returns, Parrish averages over 17 yards a return and also has a touchdown to his name. Also, out of the top 5 leaders in return yards, Parrish is in 3rd and has had 15 less returns than anyone else on the list. Although clearly not as effective as Devin Hester in the NFC, Parrish has put together a great year in the punt return and has had some some teams fearing kicking to him.

Parrish is the best punt returner in the AFC this year easily.

Im going to go with Joshua Cribbs. I know he is more dangerous on kickoffs than punt returns, but I like to think he is like Devin Hester in the regards of a "fear factor". For example if someone asked me as a punter who would you rather punt to Parrish or Cribbs I would say Cribbs because of his breakaway ability. And Hester is a much better Punt returner, but knowing his ability, you probably dont want to kick off to him either. That is the point I'm trying to get at. So Cribbs is a great kick off returner, so wouldnt you think twice before punting? Meanwhile Parrish is not that great at kickoffs, so you might take a chance on punting to him. See where I am getting at?

-Cribbs: PR- 22 Yds-238 Avg.-10.8 Lng.-31 Td-0
-Parrish: PR-22 Yds-386 Avg.-17.5 Lng.-74 Td-1

Yes I understand that statwise Parrish is better. I am quite aware of that before I accepted this td. But I just think that Cribbs is better overall, when you look at stats coupled with the "fear factor." Good luck Wallace even if I get trucked!

Problem is although Cribbs is having a great year, he is not Devin Hester. He has yet to strike that fear factor into players whenever he is on the field. His kick return has been spectacular this season, but like you said, Parrish is having a much better year.

Parrish has become known as a force on punt return. Parrish has also only returned 3 kickoffs all year, so we still don't even know what he could do in that regard.

This is a good argument for stats, because they both have the same number of returns in 22.

Touchdowns: Parrish 1, Cribbs 0

Yards: Parrish 386, Cribbs 238

Avg: Parrish 17.5, Cribbs 10. 8

Returns of 20 or more yards: Parrish 6, Cribbs 3

Returns of 40 or more yards: Parrish 2, Cribbs 0

So, although Parrish leads in every major category, you would still say Cribbs is more feared? I'm sorry, but I can't agree with that. Cribbs is a very dangerous kick off returner. However, his punt returning has been good, but Parrish's has been great.

In every 4 returns that Parrish has, he has broken it for more than 20 yards. In every 10 returns, he has almost 1 return for 40 or more yards.

That, my friend, is putting fear into an opponent for you.

Wallace thanks for putting up the stats again for me. I understand your point. Very much I do. And you are not supposed to agree with me Wallace so thanks for reiterating that for me too. Think if you are a punter...Cribbs or Parrish? Really think from a special teams coordinator's standpoint. I could be wrong but if Cribbs is not the most feared and dangerous return man in the AFC than I must be mistaken greatly. And of course no one compares to Devin Hester. But the circumstances certainly do, and in my eyes the two are similar in more than one way. And I know stats are your main argument here. And you really can't argue with stats. But if stats counted for everything, there would always be one clear cut best, and never any room to argue.....and thats why stats are not everything.

Fear is when the man is standing on the field, and you refuse to punt to him because of how dangerous he is (Devin Hester). Neither Cribbs nor Parrish have achieved this fear factor that you speak of.

Also, you get feared in punt return for doing what? The answer there is breakin big runs. Cribbs has yet to do this in his career, while Parrish has shown that he can do this. I know Cribbs is a better kick returner than Parrish, that's a given. However, he has yet to shown that he can be a huge factor in the punt return.

You've said it yourself, Cribbs' long is only 34 yards. That is not enough to say that other teams "fear" punting to him.

Parrish has shown the ability to break huge runs time and time again.

If your main argument is going off of the fear factor of Cribbs game, I cannot say that is enough to give him the best punt returner in the AFC. Parrish has made bigger plays than Cribbs while on the return, yet you don't think he is feared? I cannot agree with you one bit in your analysis.

Parrish is clearly the top dog when it comes to the best punt returners in the AFC.

Alright then Wallace it is settled...but wait, maybe there is one last glimpse of hope for Anthony E. oh just checking to see if cribbs did anything in this weeks game with ..2 pr for 5yds. Parrish in the very same game(ironic they play each other no?)? He's returned nothing. So when they went head to head Cribbs beat him out. I guess I win then no?

Wow. Two great throwdowners going at it in this one. Should be interesting. I'll wait for at least 2 arguments from each to vote though.

Cribbs for sure.

December 16, 2007  02:20 PM ET

i did read the argument. i also saw the stats. Roscoe is averaging 7 more yards on the same amount of carries. Believe me, i was going to argue for Cribbs, but when i saw that stat, i declined.
