Odds are the New York Mets are going to be favored to win the National League East in 2008. But the Mets are acually going to be worse this season then they were last season. Yes David Wright is the best 3rd baseman in the bigs, but Jose Reyes is the 3rd best SS in the division behind Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramirez. Luis Castillo's best assest has been his speed, which is why he was so effective with Florida, but now hes a few years older and a step slower hes not the player he once was. The rest of thier core is old, Delgado is past his prime and it shows. Moises Alou is over 40 and is a nice player to have when hes healthy, but is not a game changing player. Brian Schnider is an excellent defensive catcher but a subpar hitter, and endy chaver and Ryan Church are good role player, not every day outfielders for a contending team.
The Mets starting rotation is made up of 5 questions marks. Pedro is old, cannot pitch deep in to games, Maine struggles through out a whole season, El Duque isnt good anymore and Oliver Perez gives up too many walks. Pelfrey and Humber are highly touted, but highly touted prospects dont always work out. The bullpen is old and ineffective. Mets=4th

Okay, I took this because the dirst thing I noticed was your very BOLD opening statement, "The Mets are going to be bad next season." You then open your argument by stating that they will most likely be, "favored to win the National League East 2008." How can that be?

The fact of the matter is that the Mets do have a solid base team and they are doing the things necessary to bring in some new talent as a supporting cast. I'm not sure how you can say that Pelfrey and Humber will not produce. No they (prospects) don't "always" work out but there is nothing for you to base an opinion on to say otherwise.

To say El Duque is no good anymore is pretty bold as well and just not true. You mention Oliver Perez and ignore the rest of the pitchers and the bullpen.

For you to think that they will go to fourth place is just unrealistic and premature. So for you, Wright is the man and they just go down from there. I don't think so...

Wagner gets worse each each year and his velocity gets noticibly slower. The Phillies and Braves have better offenses and pitching staffs. Rollins, Vicorino, Utley, Howard Burrell and Escobar, Kelly Johnson, Teixera, Jones, Francouer is a better nucleus then Reyes, Castillo, Beltran, Wright, Delgado. The Marlins, even with losing Cabrera and Willis are going to be better this year and have a strong nucleus to for the next couple of years.
The Mets bullpen, like the rotation is old and will be ineffective down the stretch. Heilman is overrated and pedro felicano is too old to be good down the stretch. This past season proved how the Mets old pitching staff can catch up to them at the end of the season, and with 3 of the other 4 teams in the NL can expecedly be better this year, the Mets cannot. They have no significant off season pick ups, where as the Braves added Jair Jurriens and Tom Glavine and the Phillies got Brad Lidge and could move Myers back in to the rotation. While the Phils and Braves are a year better, The Mets are a year older, and will likely fall apart sooner than the last month in 2008. There wont even be a chance for a collapse because they wont getthat far.

Your argument is unfortunately based upon pure speculation. The fact is that the Mets have picked upp some young talent (prospects) and they will continue to do so. Can we at least wait for Spring Training to have a TD of this nature? Your whole argument is that the Mets are getting older... Wow!

I still like Wagner and I do think that the rotation is pretty solid. Pedro will lead the way. The key for the Mets will bhe what they do in the bullpen for their closers. They will certainly be in the mix and be in serious contention with any other NL team.

Right now both NY teams are quite, don't expect that to last for much longer and don't expect the Mets franchise to do nothing abou the collapse they had last year. People on all levels are going to do everything in their power to make sure it does not happen again, at least not the way it did. I also think it's hard for one to just blame the Mets pitching at the end of the season. I think it had a lot to do with the bats.

Jose Reyes is better than Hanley Ramirez. And he's probably better overally than Rollins too. Just because Rollins played out of his mind last season and Reyes dropped off in the second half doesn't mean that Reyes is a poorer player. He's younger, faster, has more home run potential...Rollins is a great player, but let's not go nuts.

I do agree though that the Mets did nothing to help themselves so far in the off-season. They need to add a few more peices to the puzzle if they hope to compete. RIght now the balance of NL power has swung to the West.

I would rather have Hanley than Reyes actually. I think Hanley is more of a complete player.

The Mets will still be a good team. They can obviously hit and Wagner can still be great(in the regular season anyway). The pithcing isn't great but you do have Maine, Perez, and Pedro still. If they were in the AL, this might be different. But they have enough talent in the NL to be a good team.
