Tourney X- Championship- Houston vs. Wake Forest

Rules for the throwdown can be found here: http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/82160

I will be choosing Houston. All players have to be post-1982. All stats are from the NBA.

G- Damon Jones- He's averaged 7 points (high of 12), 3 assists (high of 6), and shot 39% from deep for his career. Jones hasn't had a fantastic career in the NBA, but a solid one at that.

G- Otis Birdsong- This is the surprising one. He averaged 18 points (25), 3 rebounds (4), 3 assists (4), and shot 51% from the field for his career.

F- Clyde Drexler- Hall of Famer. In the League, he averaged 20 points (27), 6 rebounds (8), and 6 assists (8). He had a great career in the NBA.

F- Bo Outlaw- Averages of 5 points (10), 5 rebounds (8), and shot 57% from the field for his career. Also worth mentioning is his near 1200 career blocks to his name. Outlaw was a good role player in the League.

C- Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon- He averaged 22 points (28), 11 rebounds (14), and 3 blocks (5), and he seems well on his way to Springfield. This was a pretty obvious pick.

I think my team is very balanced. I have two scorers, some good rebounders, a solid point guard, and, overall, a pretty good team.

PG Muggsy Bogues Apg 7.6 Spg 1.5 ppg 7.7 One the best assist/TO ratios in NBA history and a DEADLY halfcourt defender

SG Chris Paul 16.6ppg 8.3apg 4.8 rpg

SF Josh Howard 13.9ppg 6.2rpg 1.6 apg

PF Rodney Rogers 10.9ppg 4.5rpg 2.0 apg

C Duncan- You might have heard of him

21.8ppg 11.9rpg and 3.2apg with 2.5 blocks to boot.

My Backcourt is a bit undersized but Muggsy was VERY protective of the ball and Paul averages 2.5 TO per game as a 2nd year lifespan.

Rodney had a VERY good streach where he averaged 15 and 5 in LA and had a very good shooting record until he became a 3 point shooter late in his career for some reason.

First off, Chris Paul is a point guard. Secondly, one is 5'3" and the other is 6'0". VERY short backcourt at any level, not just the NBA. Birdsong (6'3") could post up on Paul on the shorter Paul. Damon Jones has an entire 12 INCHES on Bogues. Another mismatch in the post.

I definitely have you with Drexler over Howard. The tough ones are power forward and center. First, I'll do Rogers vs. Outlaw.

Rogers: 45% FG, 2.0 apg, 0.5 bpg
Outlaw: 57% FG, 1.6 apg, 1.3 bpg

Definite edge to Outlaw in FG% and blocks. They're pretty even in assists. Rebounds are also fairly even, but the edge in scoring goes to Rogers. This is a pretty close one. I'll call it a draw for now.

Olajuwon: 21.8 ppg, 51% FG, 71% FT, 11.1 rpg, 2.5 apg, 3.1 bpg
Duncan: 21.8 ppg, 51% FG, 68% FT, 11.9 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.5 bpg

What's interesting is that they are almost identical in all the stats used for big men. However, Duncan's stats will go down when he nears the end of his career. I'll compare their first 10 years in the league:

Olajuwon: 23.6 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 3.6 bpg
Duncan: 21.8 ppg, 11.9 rpg, 2.5 bpg

Now I think you can see that, if anything, Hakeem should be given the edge.

Jones VS Muggsy

Muggsy wins .7ppg, 4.6apg and 1.1 spg

I sweep you Stat Wize

and "Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?"

1-0 Wake

Chris Paul is improving- and lets not forget we are not exactly walking the Ball vs Phi Slamma here

You take pts by 1.4 but I have apg 5.3 and despite your size I out board you by 1.8

I'll take this one thank you as your size has not helped you board and I'm a better passer to overcome your ppg advantage

Open court I will smoke you as Otis is not exactly Drexler going up and down the court.

Clyde vs Howard

Oh thats you there- Josh can;t hang with Clyde- YET

Let not forget that Clyde was a SG for the bulk of his time there as well.

Bo vs Rodney

I double you on points and steals

Screaming about FG% really is a bit skewed when your guy launches a grand total of 38 3s in 14 years and mine almost shot 35% from Downtown

3-1 Me so far

and the Fun one

Timmy VS Dream

Oddly enough Tim stands tall vs Dream- and I disagree that he's going to dip too much- Tim has been NOTHING but consistant his entire span- in 10 years he has ALWAYS been around 20 pts he is consistant to a fault.

I'll give you the edge at point guard, but I'll now continue arguing centers. This is Duncan vs. Olajuwon comparing their 11th years in the League.

Olajuwon: 28 pts, 11 reb, 52% FG, 76% FT, 3 blk, 4 ast, 2 stl
Duncan: 18 pts, 9 reb, 54% FG, 71% FT, 2 blk, 3 ast, 1 stl

Let's see, Hakeem has him by a huge margin in points and has a couple rebounds on him. They are fairly equal in FG% and FT%. The Dream also averaged an extra block, assist, and steal every game. To me, it seems like Timmy is declining somewhat because minutes, rebounds, assists, blocks, and points.

1-1.

Now we can compare CP3's and Otis's second years.

Birdsong: 22 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast, 51% FG
Paul: 17 pts, 4 reb, 9 ast, 44% FG

I'll take points and FG%. You have assists by a large margin and rebounds are equal. For right now, unless someone can convince me otherwise, it's a draw. MAYBE a slight edge to Paul for his having the better rookie season though.

I take SF. 2-1 or 2-2 (possibly).

For PF, I'll compare the first 10 seasons for each.

Rogers: 11 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2 TO
Outlaw: 6 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 1 TO

An extra rebound & fewer turnovers definitely help. Draw.

2-1 or 2-2 (maybe).

ok- you wanna know something else Hakeem didn;t have after 10 years in?

4 rings

Hakeem won his 2 rings in his 10th and 11th year

Duncan has his 4th ring after his 10th. already doubling up what Hakeem has in his entire carrer

Lets Go to the Videotape

Head to Head Matchups Duncan VS Hakeem

Wins: Duncan 10 Hakeem 0

Points Duncan 21.1 Hakeem 13.8

Rebounds Duncan 11.4 hakeem 8.5

Assist Duncan 3.0 hakeem 1.3

So Uh- yeah I think Duncans doing OK vs Hakeem

And I'm sorry- you are never going to convince me that 1 rebound per game gives you a draw over 5 points and a TO

Sorry- your BEST scoring year does NOT equal my average

The ONLY position you have a clear advantage is SF and we can go Center all day- but the other 3 is all me all the time

You admit PG
You Admit SG
I'll give SF

PF is All me- Bo played 14 years and Rodney 12- I don;t know why you keep popping up 10 years

Rodney takes a 5.4ppg 0.4apg vs Bo's 0.4 rpg and 0.7 TO per game less.

no Contest Rodney is the Better player.

PF Me
C- Debateable- Could go either way- I'll take Duncan Personally- 4 rings (and counting) to 2

NCshvDavid's team runs circles around GOAT's team

Drexler/Olajuwon

vs

Howard, Duncan and Paul basically

Bogues is better than Jones

Paul better than Birdsong

Howard vs Drexler=slight edge to Drexler

Outlaw vs Rogers=even

Duncan vs Olajuwon=even

Report Offensive Comment

He didn't even have a shooting guard in his lineup though, DJ! He had two point guards.

I have the edge at center and small forward. There is a tie at power forward. All that is left is the backcourt.

Report Offensive Comment

Hakeem is better than Duncan at center, Hakeem manhandled Shaq when theyplayed each other in the finals and that toward the end of Hakeems career. Drexler is better than Howard, but GOAT, as Birdsong and Jones are not as useful offensvely, and they will be houlded with full court press by much quicker players, the ede in the guards goes to NCshvDavid

Report Offensive Comment

Okay, so that would put it at 2-2. How does he get your vote for tying with me? Anyways, I think you're overrating his backcourt. Yes, it's very good, but they have no size and it would be easy to make passes over the top. And how many teams apply full court pressure in the NBA? I almost never see it until the very end of games when one team needs the ball. The reason they don't press is because, at that level, everyone can handle the ball very well, including Birdsong (who's a pretty good scorer) and Damon Jones.

Report Offensive Comment

Are you NOT the guy that popped up a 6'3 Small Forward in out last TD?

Don;t give me that noise!

Report Offensive Comment

Haha, a shooting guard becoming a small forward really isn't that different because in most offenses it wouldn't matter. They'd both be on the wings anyways. But a point guard to a shooting guard? I don't know about that...

Report Offensive Comment

I think the key in this throwdown is Paul vs. Birdsong. Other than that it's 2-2 in positions IMO. For now, I give a slight edge to GOAT, as his detailed and convincing arguments influenced my basketball retarded mind more.

Report Offensive Comment

"Basketball retarded mind"? Hahaha.

Report Offensive Comment

What a great TD. I am gonna have to think about this one. I do agree that Chris Paul can not be moved to the shooting guard spot, unless we are just saying choose the 5 best players from each college.

Report Offensive Comment

When Hakeem and Duncan matched up it was near the end of Olajuwon's career and Duncan was young guy running around out there. Very different. Secondly, that's what you're going on? Rings? That's BS. Rings should not weigh that heavily. TD has had great teammates through the years, most recently Tony Parker and before that he teamed down low with David Robinson.

I didn't come out and say shooting guard is yours no contest. It's very close either way. So what if Hakeem had his best scoring year in his 11th season. Duncan definitely isn't playing fantastic this year. I'm sorry, but he's on the decline whether you'd like to admit it or not.

It's still 2-1 or 2-2 (on a good day).

Did the Dream have Drexler for his Ring?

and some guy named Charles as Well- and some dude named Pippen too?
