#5 will belong to the Vikings

#6 will belong to the Saints

I left the Giants off because they play in Buffalo, and than they play the Patriots... Both extremely tough games. Plus the Giants have been struggling lately, going 3-3 in their last 6, but beating the Eagles by 3, the Lions by 6, and the Bears by 7. All 3 of those wins were very close games.

The other team I left off is the Redskins... They are a pretty decent team, but had a 4 game lossing streak not too long ago, and have to go into Minnesota and than play at home against the Cowboys, 2 very tough games. And likely they would have to win both to have any shot at making it.

#5 Vikings
#6 Giants

I agree with the Vikings, but I say the Giants get in and not the Saints. First off, the Giants are 9-5 and the Saints are 7-7. So the Giants already have a 2-game lead and there are only 2 games left.

So for the Saints to even force a tie, the Saints would have to win both games against the Eagles, who just beat the Cowboys and look pretty good right now, and the Bears who can give the Saints trouble. Then the Giants would have to lose both games against the Bills and the Patriots. That is tough to have happen.

The Patriots have not looked like they are unbeatable of late, so do not count out the Giants winning that game yet. In the least 3 weeks, The Patriots barely beat the Eagles and Ravens, 2 teams with losing records and the ravens who just lost to the Dolphins who have a record of 1-3 and then they only beat the Jets by 10.

The Bills offense struggled very much against the Browns defense which is not great. The got shutout by the Browns defense, that is not a good sign. The Giants defense can get after the QB.

Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward have rushed good this season. Jacobs averages 4.9 yards per carry and Ward averages 4.8.

Going into Buffalo right now to beat a Bills team that is determined to make the playoffs is going to be extremely tough. The Bills have lost only 3 games in their last 9, and one of them was to the Pats and the other one was to the Jags. Not an easy win by any means.

Then the Giants would get the pleasure of having the pressure as being the only team remaining to prevent the Pats from gaining that ellustrious 16-0 record. You really think the weak-minded Giants will have the fortitude not to collapse under that pressure? Eli is weak, and his game will be too under that kind of pressure.

The Saints meanwhile have Philly at home, and the Bears in Chicago. Neither of those teams have any real reason to keep playing... And while I dont think those teams wont play the Saints tough, I really dont see them having the motivation to beat a team that is desperate to get back into the playoffs...

The Saints are not really a very good rushing team, so they are kind of one-dimensional on the offensive side of the ball. They average 92.2 yards per game rushing (26th). On the other hand, the Giants are 17th in passing and 6th in rushing, so the defense against the Saints can just play the pass.

Now one defense the Saints cannot defend the pass, they allow almost 250 passing yards per game which is 30th in the NFL. The Giants rank 11th in defending the pass and 12th in stopping the run. So the offense has to mix it up out there.

The others are against the Saints in many of ways. It would be very unlikely for them to make the playoffs.

I do not know what happens if the Giants lose their last 2 games and the Saints win their last 2 games, then they will be tied. I do not know what the tiebreaker is since they did not play each during the course of the season. I guess a 1-game playoff or something. So even if that happens, the Saints are not guaranteed a playoff spot.

The Eagles can play well at times and when they play well they can be tough to beat, as they just beat the 1st place team in the conference, that is says something, don't make the injury excuse

Forfeited Turn

Nothing to say since you had to forfeit your argument.

It would be tough for the Saints to comeback and tie and then force a tiebreaker.

Good Luck

I dont see the Giants winning either of their remaining games...

@ Buffalo and v. the Pats?

And I dont see how the Saints will lose...

Home v. Philly and in Chicago...

The argument should be between the Saints and the Vikings. So point to Phillyman. Saints will lose to Philly.

December 17, 2007  05:08 PM ET

You really think so... Even at home?

December 17, 2007  05:18 PM ET

Gonna be a homer for a bit

Just some comments for Philymans arguments:

1: "So for the Saints to even force a tie, the Saints would have to win both games against the Eagles, who just beat the Cowboys and look pretty good right now" -- Looking pretty good? Coming off 3 losts and beating a confused Cowboys team yesterday. Horrible play calling. Cowboys were in the redzone 3 seperate occasions and chose to throw the ball instead of running. 'Boys threw the ball 36 times and only ran ball 15 times, only 4 in the second half!

2: "The Bills offense struggled very much against the Browns defense which is not great. The got shutout by the Browns defense, that is not a good sign." -- did you see the weather in Cleveland? I dont care what offense you have, that weather is what defeated the Bills, not the Browns defense. The weather at foxboro wasnt even remotely as severe and that humbled even the mighty Patriots.

3: "Then the Giants would have to lose both games against the Bills and the Patriots. That is tough to have happen." -- Giants are without Shockey and Eli hasnt really been lights out all year. He hasnt been the most consistant QB and losing one of his top targets will hurt him even more. They've been winning ugly all year and their luck has run out.

Hope i dont jinx my team but...The Saints has owned the Eagles recently Gruden.

I'm a Viking fan, and I'm not so sure that they are getting in. The Bears always play them pretty tough, they still have a tough game against Washington, and then they play IN Denver. The Vikings haven't been much good while playing late in cold conditions. I believe, though, and I could be wrong, but if Minnesota wins tonight doesn't that eliminate the Saints?

December 17, 2007  05:26 PM ET

We are not done yet Phillyman lol.

Lets go Bears tonight!!!!

Giants and Vikings get them.

December 17, 2007  05:32 PM ET

no it doesnt eliminate them hoffa. WHEN the Saints win out, they'll be 9-7. WHEN the Vikes lose 1 out of 3 games, they'll also be 9-7 with the Saints owning the tiebreaker. (not 100% sure but i've heard on espn radio that this is true)

Giants beat the bills, lose to Pats, finish 10-6, 5th playoff slot, Aints stay home, sorry guru.

December 17, 2007  07:10 PM ET

Bowdown, Im counting on the vikes downfall more then the Giants actually.

December 17, 2007  07:28 PM ET

Yeah, I was thinking they were 6-8, not 7-7. The Bears, Eagles, Lions and Cardinals are eliminated. I think the tiebreaker comes down to conference record if the teams haven't played.

December 17, 2007  07:41 PM ET

Those team mentioned are "mathmatically" still in it and will be eliminated if the Vikes win...IF.

December 17, 2007  09:24 PM ET

I saw your blog on what the eagles need to happen for them to make the playoffs, highyl unlikely.

they are 99.99 perecent out of it.

December 18, 2007  10:26 PM ET

Don't see the Giants beating a 15-0 Pats team, but how much will N.E. be willing to put into that game with the playoffs coming? If Brady or Moss got hurt in a meaningless game (to them), they'd never hear the end of it.

December 18, 2007  10:59 PM ET

"Those team mentioned are "mathmatically" still in it and will be eliminated if the Vikes win...IF."

That's what I meant. I was correcting myself after saying that I wasn't sure about whether or not the Saints would be eliminated.

December 19, 2007  01:50 AM ET

loucatfan, its Bill Belichick. You think he's not going to go for a perfect year, and push his players as much as it takes, to do it?

December 19, 2007  01:53 AM ET

I think the Giants will lose one of these next two. And Washington might actually win the last spot, if NO loses one of their next two. Remember, Washington played the Cowboys a few weeks ago and only lost by 5, even though they were something like 17 point underdogs. Now they're playing better football, and the game's in DC - they could win that. I know Green Bay's rooting for that, because if Dallas loses one of their next two, Green Bay would probably clinch homefield.
