The Chicago Bears should start Devin Hester at QB.

I am only challenging the best in my TD's from now on, so don't take it as an insult.

The Bears should put Devin Hester under center in shotgun and give him more chances to put his hands on the ball.

I don't mean he should be their full time starter every season, but for the remainder of this season, I ask why not? You have seen what Their Qb's can do, so do they really need auditions for next season? Grossman has been horrible, Griese cannot get it done, and Kyle "friggin" (I gave him that last night) Orton looks like a cast away from the AVN awards. None of these guys are playmakers, Hester is. I mean they can't convert a 3rd down now, so really what's the worst that can happen. There is only one argument and that's injury but he's already out there for a ton of plays anyways. It's like with Philly, they get the ball into their playmakers (Westbrook's) hands any chance they can get, the Bears need to do the same. Start by snapping the ball to him, at the very least he can scramble for yards, with enough practice he could at least complete some throws, he's a stud athlete. The Bears should get the ball into Hester's hands as often as possible. He makes big things happen.

Put him at Quarterback?

No way would I put a return man at Quarterback. If anywhere, I would maybe put him as a slot receiver, or as a deep tailback.

Deep Tailback would be a better position, I know you aren't talking about full-time, but the Bears need a QB, and Hester is NOT a QB, I don't think he is the guy they are looking for at the end of the year, even if they are out of it.

It looks easy to throw a ball ACCURATELY to receivers, and Tight Ends, but it is not. It is harder than it looks. It is also harder to throw a football that it looks. Even ask some people who don't throw the ball that well. I don't think Hester would make a good QB, he has speed, but does he have the power and accuracy at the position? I will let you answer that one.

So, here is my idea. Put Devin Hester as a deep tail-back, and hand him off the ball, or screen pass it to him for more touches. This way, he would be a safety for the QB, for if he had nobody to throw to, and he could take a few direct snaps as trick plays too. So that kills 2 birds with one stone. Being a tailback, he could be the QB's safety guy, take a few direct snaps as trick plays, and get more touches on the ball.

I only started this TD because I have heard it like a billion times from Wilbohn on PTI. At first I was like ok I got it you have a man crush, but then I started thinking, they have ZERO ability to pass the ball now, I know as you say it ain't easy to hit a receiver, but the guys trained to do the job up there cannot do it. I say give him a shot, your Idea is a valid one, I mean it accomplishes getting him the ball more, so I really have no counter argument there. I still feel like he could be a Vince Young type QB if he could learn to pass even a little. If he could learn let's say a package of 20 passing plays, why not? Does having Orton under center make the defense respect the pass? NO they still stack the box. It would certainly keep fans coming to see games, it might even win the Bears a game so why not? Seems to me like there is no better option for a QB on that team. Wait didn't one of their receivers play QB in highschool or soemthing?

Well, I see what you are saying, and I am seizing the opporitunity to tell where I think Hester should go on the Bears Offense to get them to score more points. Well, not too sure if this helps, but the Bears average completion percentage per game is 58%, and IF Hester can complete half of his passes, it would be only 50%.

Which is better, 50% or 58%? Right, it is a small difference, but it depends on where the ball is on the field. 58, is better than 50. Also, the completion percentage isn't even their biggest problem. Look at these averages:

Griese - 61%
Orton - 58%
Grossman - 54%

It isn't the greatest average, but it is better than completing only 50% or less of your passes, which is good.

Now, onto Hester being a Tail-Back over a Quarterback. Here is why, he has the speed to get to the outside, and when they pitch it to him, he can take the ball and run to the outside, and make his way to the opened field.

Another perk to him being a running back, is that he would be able to get more completions on screen passes, and short passes that they would need to convert a short 3rd down play. I think he would be better off as a running back, than a Quarterback.

You forget that he would still make palys with his legs, I mean look at Vince Young, not a great rating last season with 51.5 % but they went 8-8, and he made a ton of plays with his legs. I know it's hard to take a guy who hasn't played before but if he could run a base package I say its still better then any option Chicago has, their QB situation is Horrid.

Well, he does have legs and they would be put to good use as a running back as well. That is how I see him using his legs to his use. Also, he could be used as a wide-out from an audible play, and they would still have the QB able to throw to him, because the QB they have now, should be able to throw at least a short pass to him, and Hester would be able to complete it.

So, in conclusion, I leave you with this:

Hester would be better at running back over a quarterback, IF they used his skills to their advantage on offense.

How do you put a quarterback under center....in the shotgun?

December 18, 2007  10:59 AM ET

If a team sees Hester in the backfield there will be 9 guys in the box instantly. If you put him back there with a QB it has a potential to work, but still is very unlikely. They are better off getting the ball into his hands with bubble screens, reverses, and high % passes. His speed also makes him a constant deep ball threat, but if you put a player at QB who is a bad passer teams will key on the run, and if he can't pass that leaves Chicago's offense exactly where it started. Terrible.

This only works in college where the disparity in talent allows for a superstar skill position player to outflank or outrun the defense...

December 18, 2007  11:10 AM ET

you got to be kidding me, they need to do soemthing......what else can they do

December 18, 2007  11:10 AM ET

Bombers = Alley...Detroit = Oop...
Bomb, did you owe Detroit a favor or something?

December 18, 2007  11:10 AM ET

John he would line up both under center and shotgun

Put Hester as a very, very deep tailback. that way the QB is still there as a passing threat (kinda), but they can also pitch it back to him and make it like a punt return.

December 18, 2007  03:49 PM ET

Last return man I know of that became a decent QB...Joe Theismann... Of course, the idea of Hester under center is ridiculous.

December 18, 2007  05:52 PM ET

have you seen how many kicks he has muffed? Chalk him up for 6 fumbled snaps a game.

Add to that his backwords running would have the Bears looking at a lot of 3rd and 35's

December 18, 2007  07:23 PM ET

Are you kidding me? Thats gotta be joke.

December 19, 2007  02:58 PM ET

season shot..they already throw him all over the place...why not?

December 19, 2007  03:18 PM ET

Here are 3 reasons why I could see him as being under center or in the shotgun.

#1 - Bears season is shot, why not?
#2 - Lovie is the type of guy that I can see trying out new things
#3 - Lovie would love to insert new schemes against the Packers and do just about anything to beat the Packers.

December 19, 2007  03:43 PM ET

Let's say they do it and he gets seriously injured. Then you've gotten a guy hurt by trying to have him do something he's not accustomed to doing in a season that was going nowhere.

What do they gain by putting him at QB?

December 19, 2007  03:47 PM ET

NO WAY. Hester would increase his chance of injury greatly and he is the Bears most volatile commodity and valuable enough where he is now. The Bears just gotta suffer thru a bad decision they made in the offseason which was to run out the Grossman-Griese-Orton conga line as a means to win games and get back to the SB. Wasnt gonig to happen under any circumstances this those untalented nobodys at QB.

December 19, 2007  03:49 PM ET

Not quarterback, but maybe just drop him back and have him take direct snaps and run for it.

December 19, 2007  04:33 PM ET

Vote to Detroitfan but I got to give B0mb3rs props for being ballsy enough to make the argument.

December 19, 2007  04:50 PM ET

thanks J.hova....I will take that...it wasn't my idea though originally sometimes I post ones like this to "feel the pulse" of sporting fans and see if they agree with a sports pundit. Whilbon has been saying this for like 8 weeks.

December 19, 2007  05:03 PM ET

Sure why not! All the Bears' real QB's suck anyways! He could probably get it done or atleast give the fans something to cheer for this season! We should start a march......Hestor for QB! HAHAHAHAHHA FUNNY!
