As a Yankee fan, it pains me to say this but, Manny Ramirez is the best player currently in baseball to have never won an MVP award, though he should've won in 1999, the year he drove in 165.

Manny is a career .319/.409/.593 hitter--that's excellent. Over his 15 year career, he's belted out 490 homers and driven in 1604 runs (averages out to about 33/107 per year), good for 5th amongst active players and 28th all time.

He has finished in the top ten in MVP voting 8 times, and in the top five 3 of those times.

He is simply an amazing hitter and one of this generation's best and is definitely the best to have not won an MVP award.

I am going to go with Todd Helton. His career stats are .332/.430/.583- and that's not only excellent but his average and OBP are better than Manny's and his slugging percentage is only .10 lower. His HR count is 303, but he's not a power hitter, and thats still not bad, as well as his RBI's (1087). And Manny has been in the league for four more years, and has had some playoff time as well which helps with career stats. And if you think about it, Helton has played for the Rockies who obviously besides this year are a pretty off the radar team, unlike Manny who plays with the Red Sox. Helton plays his position better than Manny. Not to say Manny is not great, because he is, and he should definitely have an MVP... but I think Todd Helton is the best overall current MLB player not to have an MVP award.

Not a bad choice at all but I do have two small issues to start with: 1. playoff numbers do not count toward career stats so that argument is null and void. 2. playing first base is A LOT easier than playing outfield. Yes, Todd Helton is a great fielder but to compare playing 1B to OF is, cliche as it might sound, like comparing apples and oranges; the only thing they have in common is that they're both fruits.

While I hate bringing this up, it must be discussed. Manny's home/away splits are pretty much equal. Helton's are not. His BA drops from .367 at home to .295 away. His OBP drops from a crazy .465 to (still great but substantially less) .394 away. His slugging goes from .663 to .502 and his OPS goes from 1.128 to .896. His away slg/OPS are still good but that drop off is hard to ignore.

Now let's go a little head to head: Manny has won 9 Silver Slugger awards (8 of which since Todd Helton has been in the league) compared to 4 for Todd Helton. In 11 of his 15 seasons, Manny has driven in over 100. Helton has only done it five times, and none since 2003. Helton has also only finished in the top ten for MVP voting 3 times, compared to Manny's 8.

cont. in comments.

great research...but the same can be said about manny. when not playing at Fenway his average drops from .303 to .289. His OBP drops from .403 to .373 (both numbers lower than heltons numbers), and the drop offs are hard to ignore in those numbers as well as his OPS which drops as well from .891 to .871. Manny's home OPS is still lower than Helton's road one. And yes Helton has nto hit as many hrs or driven in as many, but the real reason he was not considered more for the MVP is the fact that he plays with the besides this year irrelavant Rockies. Its because Manny has played on the Red Sox who will always be relevant that he gets the attention. I live in PA, and i will tell you that i hear a lot more about manny than about Helton even if helton is doing better, because of who he plays with.

Yes Manny's numbers drop a bit but their still a little more reasonable. Helton's average drops 72 points, his BOP 71, his slugging 161, and his OPS 232 points! Manny's only drop 14 points, 30 points, 13 points, and 20 points respectively. While it's still a drop, it's MUCH more manageable than the crazy dives that Helton's numbers take.

As for the teams they've played for, Manny may've been on better teams but if you're really good enough, you'll still win--take A-Rod winning MVP on a last place team, for example.

Another astounding thing is that ten times in his career, Manny has gone at least .300/.400/.500. That is absolutely incredible. Helton has done it a great six times, but again he falls short of Manny.

Last but not least, we come to their 162 game averages. Per 162, Manny puts up: .313/.409/.593/1.002, 41 HR, 133 RBI. Helton does: .332/.430/.583/1.013, 31 HR, 112 RBI. Each win three, with Manny taking homers, RBI, and SLG. I'll sacrafice 21 points of OBP for the extra power. Also, Manny wins the tiebreaker of TB/162 348 to 339.

Manny is a phenom. The fact that he hasn't won an MVP as one of the game's best hitters is almost criminal.

Great job jetstolehome. Really I really enjoyed this td, and as much as I hate to say this, for a Yankee fan you are pretty smart! But think if Manny played at Coors would his stats not do the same thing with the air conditions? I'm sure we all can say that is true, and both are great players. I just think Helton has never got the same respect as Manny even though their stats are similar. Just because he plays in Colorado. So I'm still sticking by my guns and going with Helton, because Manny still will have a chance at another WS title, and the MVP will follow soon. By the way, MVP means most valuable player. To his team, no one, and I mean no one can rightfully say Manny has been more valuable to his team than Helton to his. Manny has had a great supporting cast for a bit of time. Helton meanwhile has stuck through the thick and thin of a Rockies franchise, and did his best without the players around him. That's why he is my man in this td. Stats are sometimes inflated by certain factors, but when it comes down to it, MVP should mean something other than stats. We have made our arguments. Let the fans decide. Again Great Job Jetstolehome!

good luck. if i don't get to this again for a while, i apologize--holiday shopping and what not.

If you're including pitchers, I think Maddux and Pedro Martinez were better then Manny. It's hard to argue against Manny for every day players. Derek Jeter and Mike Piazza are probably the only players that can make a case against Manny.

December 18, 2007  03:14 PM ET

yeah, i was thinking either Jeter or Manny. you miiiight be able to throw in Thome. maybe.

December 18, 2007  04:00 PM ET

Helton is a great pick.....didn't see that coming...

December 18, 2007  04:02 PM ET

Jeter is a bit overrated, Manny is better, but pitchers have the Cy Young, so they rarely win MVP's, and I don't think they should be included

December 18, 2007  04:03 PM ET

Vote to Helton. One of the most under appreciated players in the MLB for so many years.

Hell, he even got snubbed of a Gold Glove award this year!

December 18, 2007  05:03 PM ET

no vote coletrain?

December 18, 2007  05:32 PM ET

i know that helton's stats are pretty good, but i willl tell you even im surprised

December 18, 2007  05:35 PM ET

Since Manny has payed for a little longer, I subtracted his pre 1997 totals (TH's rookie year) and Manny still beats him by 233 RBIs and 104 HRs. Helton beats Many in hits, but only by about 55. That's not bad considering I took four years off of Manny's career.

Manny hasn't been just good, he's been downright dominant. Helton has been great, but not nearly as good as Manny.

December 18, 2007  05:55 PM ET

david ortiz hasnt won one ...has he?

December 18, 2007  05:59 PM ET

no he has not...

December 18, 2007  06:03 PM ET

and none of them say anything about him
shame

December 18, 2007  06:07 PM ET

I'll wait for the final arguments... comparing Manny playing OF to Helton playing 1B isn't a very good argument because let's be honest... Manny plays an AWFUL left-field. Possibly the worst in the AL. Helton plays a very solid 1B. If anything that hurt the argument.

Other than that the progression and depth of your argument is a little stronger than Anthony's so with it being so close I'll await the final arguments. Good stuff thus far guys.

December 18, 2007  06:18 PM ET

Anthony E does NOT take easy TDs, that is for darn sure....

December 18, 2007  06:21 PM ET

there is no such thing as an easy td jim. I am passionate about sports, and will take tds that i believe in and argue them to the best of my ability. thx for taking a look!

December 18, 2007  06:45 PM ET

yep pretty much haha

December 18, 2007  08:04 PM ET

great TD, Anthony E. best of luck.

December 18, 2007  10:50 PM ET

That wasn't a shot against you, Anthony...seems you have tough TDs, that's all...that's good to see, and it's also good to see you argue them well...even if you're on the wrong side sometimes...

...and, yeah, there ARE easy TDs :-)

December 18, 2007  10:59 PM ET

i didnt take it as a shot haha jim. thx for the compliments, and yes i am on the wrong end sometimes :-) I try..
