Alright, when we look at how good of a season a position player has had, we look at three things: batting average, RBIs, and home runs. Whenever you ask someone who the best hitter ever is, they'll say, "Ted Williams", or "Ty Cobb." I ask, why? Why do we almost never consider the batting title winner as having the best season, as all time greats, they're always #1. It makes no sense. In Hank Aaron's 23 seasons, he made 25 all-star teams! He had 755 HRs, 2297 RBI, and is 3rd all time in hits! How is he not the best? He had more hits, HRs, and RBI than Teddy Ballgame and nearly as many hits, more HRs and RBI than Cobb. For some reason, now that he technically doesn't hold the HR record anymore, everyone forgot about him. I think he's the best hitter in history, and they're is almost no argument.

Easily has to be pete rose...betting aside he has:
most hits out of everyone in baseball history 4,256
most in a season by a switch hitter 230
most seasons with 200+ hits, 13
pretty versatile with the switch hitter...most ever and 200 plus a season is great stats...and if its not even pete rose...
Ty cobb has some amazing swings at teh ball himself...
most ever in the american league 4189
seasons with the most 3 of them
second with most 200+ hits in a season with 9
2nd for most hits in a game with 6
even without those two there are still great hitters in history that hit the ball better than hank aaron...
current day Ichiro Suzuki....with 264 in 2004...

Okay, I love Pete Rose, and I do think he should be in the hall(but that's another throwdown for another day), but you can't really say he was better than Hank. I love the pure hitters like Gwynn, Suzuki, and Cobb, but I'd rather have the all around slugger any day. If I was a pitcher in the majors(maybe I'll be someday....) I would be worried about giving up 4 singles to Ichiro, but having to fear Hammerin Hank hitting a HR, 2 2B, and knocking in 6 RBI. Plus, Hank Aaron had amazing pure hitting skills. .305 career average, 3771 HITS! That amazing. Like no other player in history, year in and year out, you could count on Aaron to have a fantastic season. In terms of beautiful swings, Aaron's was so sweet and pure, it makes me weep. Also, I didn't realize hits was the only way we judged hitters. Even if it is, the top 3 are 1.Rose 2.Cobb and 3.Aaron. He was the greatest.
Steveo16220 is a GGTK said 12/19, 11:17 PM
ok you say Aaron is the best but then put him third in your list of greatest hitters....
Rose had 500 plus more hits than Aaron...thats about 2 1/2 3 season worth of hitting that he has over Aaron..with only 1 more season in the league over Aaron
FaustoCarmonaFan Ocho Cinco said 12/20, 06:53 PM
No, actually, I said in terms of HITTERS FOR AVERAGE hitters, Aaron is third. Pay attention. Secondly, you really didn't even bother rebutting my argument. I say I'd rather have the all around superstar, and you say Pete Rose has more hits than Aaron. Thanks. That really helps. Finally, Pete Rose had only 500 more hits than Aaron, but Aaron had 595 more HRs and more than 950 ore RBI. His stats are clearly superior.

Rose was just an example of ONE player that was better than Aaron, i simply put out there that there are better players and he was an example...the TD wasn't about whos better rose or aaron. so if you want me to argue babe ruth or ted williams or ty cobb, no problem i could pt them in this ts as well...your job is to argue against the players i would put in here. no aaron wasnt the best ALL TIME hitter..

Report Offensive Commentuhh because Ted Williams missed a bunch of years during the War. If you calculate (based off average) what he would have hit, I believe he would be considered the greatest slugger, however Pete Rose is the hit king for hits only........interesting TD topic

Williams has the all-time best OBP at .482! That's beyond ridiculous!

Report Offensive CommentRuth had a career slugging percentage of .690. Players like Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard and Alex Rodriguez have never reached that mark during a single season.

Report Offensive CommentHere's the deal, most experts agree Hammerin Hank was not the greatest "hitter" he was a hell of a "slugger" there's a difference, Tony Gwynn was probably a better pure hitter then Hank, however at the top goes Ted and Pete, Ted smokes Pete all day so......

Report Offensive CommentI would say:
1. Williams
2. Ruth
3. Cobb
There's an argument to be made for both Ruth and WIlliams at #1, but I give Ted the very slight edge.

Report Offensive CommentThe only knock I put on Babe, or Ted, is that they played in an all white era, they didn't have to face the best the world has to offer, only white guys so in my book that down grades them a little, because I think talent wise some of the best players weren't even in the bigs at that time
B0mb3rs (HoF) | 12/19/07, 04:07 PM

Report Offensive CommentRose is ahead of Cobb only because he played against the best of all worlds, not just the best white players my list would go
Williams
Ruth
Rose
Cobb

I had to review my stats. I think I'd actually put Gehrig in 3rd above Cobb. And probably John McGraw at 5th.

Report Offensive CommentRuth dominated Negro competition as well. Buck O'Neill told a story about Ruth hitting a monster homerun off Satchel Paige. Paige admired the homerun so much that he shook hands with Ruth when he crossed home plate. Then, he had the ball retrieved and signed by Ruth.
