Anyone who has ever played any sport seriously can understand how you form habits while playing that game. Whether it's the way you kick a soccer ball, the way you pitch, the way you dribble a basketball, or in Roy Williams' case, the way you tackle. Roy Williams has effectively used the 'horse-collar' tackling technique throughout his college and NFL career, and possibly his high school career, too. (who really knows how he tackled back then, though.) Therefore, he deserves to be excused, in my opinion, because not only is the tackle a habit for him, it's a last resort. He only uses the technique when a usually faster wide-receiver is escaping. At that point in time, instinct takes over.

A habit?? Dude it is cheating. He should get flagged everytime, which doesn't happen. I have seen him get away with a few of them. I am sure when a OL-man gets beat his instinct is to hold or do whatever it takes to save his QB. If he does do it what happens? He gets a flag. Why should Williams get special treatment? He is a grown man and knows what he is doing. If he can't figure out another way then he deserves what he gets. I personally think it is very dirty and dangerous.

Forfeited Turn

I guess this TD is over.

He's already done it three times this season. Ricky Williams had a habit of smoking weed. He was suspended by the NFL. I guess he quit that habit.

Roy Williams is the reason that the rule is in place. No way he gets an exemption.

December 20, 2007  12:17 AM ET

I am going to bed, thanks for the TD. Hopefully we can finish tomorrow.

December 20, 2007  12:17 AM ET

Exemption? From the "Roy Williams rule"?

While calling it "very dirty and dangerous" is WAY overstating it, the rule IS in place largely because of Roy. He didn't invent the technique, but he perfected it and people were getting hurt bad.

I do have a problem with players taking advantage of the rule and taping their jerseys to their pads, though. That shouldn't be allowed, either.

December 20, 2007  12:19 AM ET

Dumb idea for a topic. Obviously he should be punished for it.

December 20, 2007  12:22 AM ET

Texassports, did you really say "he deserves to be excused"?

Charles Manson developed some bad habits from his childhood - perhaps a pardon for him? Thinking like this could really help prision overcrowding.

(I can't believe some of the things I read)

December 20, 2007  12:23 AM ET

LOL. Love the Charles Manson reference in at TD.

December 20, 2007  01:07 AM ET

Roy Williams to Charles Manson... wow. I thought some guys comparison of the Mitchell Report to mccarthy's redscare witchhunt was extreme

December 20, 2007  04:27 AM ET

"I thought some guys comparison of the Mitchell Report to mccarthy's redscare witchhunt was extreme"

Ah, that WAS extreme sooner. Those guys literally made that comparison. Here I think coupe was just using an extreme example to illustrate a point, not make an actual comparison. I found it quite funny.

December 20, 2007  05:45 AM ET

Give the guy a break, it was in accident :)

December 20, 2007  07:59 AM ET

Instead of an exemption, why don't you give him some speed so he isn't always behind the player he is tackling.

He does the horse collar because he is slower than everyone on the field except for the Dline and the Oline. If he was faster, he would be able to tackle head-on or from the side, not from always behind.

December 20, 2007  08:20 AM ET

"He only uses the technique when a usually faster wide-receiver is escaping"

What you are saying, is to make up for his poor speed he should be able to break the rules. Does that mean if Pacman returns if he is beat he should be able to use firearms to stop the WR, thats seems to be his habit. Why stop there? Let lineman leg whip and hold when they get beat.

December 20, 2007  08:30 AM ET

No way

Cheating is a little steep norcal... it is a rule infraction just like offsides, illegal motion or a chop block. But as far as an exemption, no way. I just want to see it called on everyone that breaks the "Roy Williams Rule" because anyone that watches football sees it at least once a game regardless of who may be playing.

December 20, 2007  09:46 AM ET

Ricky Williams smoked weed before he got to the NFL, he deserves an exemption.

December 20, 2007  10:24 AM ET

What exemption does the player that has his leg snapped because Williams couldn't control his "habit?"

Should we excuse the drunk driver that kills someone because the poor soul has a "habit?'

Sometimes I am baffled by what some people can justify when it is to their own benifit!?!?

December 20, 2007  12:09 PM ET

LOL...Texas is an idiot.
Excused because he's always done it??
It's an illegal dirty move that's named after the dirty player that has "always done it".This should be a blog for morons, not a TD.

December 23, 2007  05:27 PM ET

True that, Spaul.

December 23, 2007  06:06 PM ET

I do not agree that he should be excused but, I do get what Texas is saying. The guy has been playing that way for 10 to 15 years. Other players in the past have done it. I am not making excuses for Roy but understand that it is hard to break a technique that you have been using for the last 10 years and now must change your entire instinct.
