Bill has been a god send to floundering franchises for over 20 years. He came to the Giants in the early 80's and brought respectability back to NY. Then he moved on to New England and took them to their 2nd Super Bowl. The Jets, well he got them back to being a better team that could contend but never won the big one and did the same in Big D. The man has an eye for talent in unexpected places. Give him a couple of years and COMPLETE control and the Dolphins will be a team to contend with in the already strong AFC

If they give Bill COMPLETE control they will go nowhere.

Parcells is fantastic at talent evaluation and developing young players. His act gets old to the veterans real quick, however. Bill has some major flaws that hurt him in todays game.

1) He's loyal to a fault. You might consider that a good thing most of the time, but not when it means bringing in the likes of washed up QB's like Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe while your young talent (Tony Romo) languishes on the bench for 3 years without so much as an opportunity.

His hand picked choice to succeed him in Dallas? Charlie Weiss...

2) Bill is incredibly hard headed. Each of his four years in Dallas the Cowboys faded down the stretch in December. In nearly every instance it was because Bill refused to adapt what other teams were doing to counter them. He still ran the same plays in the same situations even when they were failing time after time.

Give Bill authority over the scouting department and player personnel matters then get out of his way. But you have to limit his authority to those specific areas or you are only going to go so far.

Oh, and get him in front of the microphones. His pressers are classic.

Romo didn't start because he was not ready to start early in his career...ask him and he will agree. He was developed over time...something that doesn't happen in the NFL too much anymore. Other young players were given the opportunity but didn't work out. Bill put the best he was allowed to get. Jerry Jones never actually gave total control to Bill in Dallas.
yes Bill is hard headed but he has also been the reviving force for three teams in 20 plus years in the NFL....Though only two have suceeded after his departure...NE and Dallas...I am a Cowboys fan but they have faded not due to Bill but due to the personell and injuries the past few years....Let him rule the roost and buy the groceries and get Cam Cameron the players he needs and they will all prosper

Romo was ready for an opportunity two years ago. He was obviously ready last year, but Bill still stubbornly stuck with Bledsoe until it became obvious the old guy was done (something New England and Buffalo had long since figured out)

Bill had as close to total control in Dallas as he's ever had anywhere else. Virtually every draft pick, every free agent signing, every trade, and every coaching decision was made by Parcells. That's not ALL bad, he just needs someone to knock him upside the head sometimes when he allows past loyalties to cloud his judgment.

How'd ya like that Galloway for Keyshawn trade? Tell me you aren't extremely happy he didn't get his way on his replacement at HC. One of the few times Jones over ruled him was cutting Key and signing T.O. who Parcells wouldn't even recognize half the time and refused to call by name.

The only major injuries they had at the end of the year under Bill was Greg Ellis last year and Flozell Adams the year before. That's it. It wasn't injuries that caused those fades, it was Parcells being hard headed.

Parcells is a great choice as long as he's limited to doing what he does best and leaving the rest of it to others.

Bill was stuck early in his start with Dallas due to Jones loyalty to Q-Carter and we all know how that turned out...Tony was not ready 2 years ago...he couldn't even manage a preseason game back then...I agree that Bill should have no contact with the staff as far as coaching decisions but his evaluation of talent is better than 3/4 of the rest of the league. Dallas would not have the team that they do if it was not for him.

Wait. You just used your last argument to AGREE with me.

The reason I accepted this TD is because in your first argument you wrote: "Give him a couple of years and COMPLETE control and the Dolphins will be a team to contend with in the already strong AFC"

Both of my previous arguments extol the virtues of Big Bill as a talent evaluator, but stress that he is lacking in other areas...IE Coaching decisions and staffing...That as long as they use him for his strengths and keep him away from other organizational decisions he'll be fine.

Really not much left for me to argue since you are changing your stance and agreeing with me.

"Give him a couple of years and Complete control and the Dolphins will be a team to contend with in the already strong AFC"

Maybe a couple more years after those first "couple of years."

Nothing can save the dolphins besides joining the CFL

December 20, 2007  05:56 PM ET

CCC will do well with this, I'll check back in here shortly

December 20, 2007  06:24 PM ET

December 20, 2007  06:35 PM ET

December 20, 2007  07:17 PM ET

U mean the Raiders that beat the Dolphags?

December 21, 2007  01:17 AM ET

easy vote to mmos... we're not talking about Dallas, we're talking about the Dolphins!

December 21, 2007  01:55 AM ET

Actually, Ruby, we were talking about Bill Parcells, not that it matters. The easy vote was against me, not for my opponent.

December 21, 2007  08:15 AM ET

If he just sticks to his job they should turn it around, there is no way they can't improve after the year they have had.

Cowboys-Celtics-ChiSox, the reason Parcells brought in Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe was to give Tony Romo time to sit on the bench and learn. When Parcells first came to Dallas, they had no talent. You never throw a young quarterback out there with a no-talent team because they almost always start to develop bad habits. The one exception to this rule is Peyton Manning. Take a look at Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger(although he started in his rookie year, he was put into a very talented team), Jason Campbell(who's played pretty well in his first year as a starter), Derek Anderson, Matt Shaub, David Garrard, Tony Romo, and Matt Hassleback. Those quarterbacks are the best quarterbacks in the league right now with the exception of Peyton Manning. Bill Parcells allowed Tony Romo to watch from the sidelines, which helped him become as good a quarterback as he is now. If Parcells threw Tony Romo out there in his first two years, he would've sucked and he wouldn't be in the league right now. Allowing a quarterback to sit and learn is so helpful today because of all of the complex offenses and defenses that exist right now. I wouldn't want to throw a rookie quarterback out against Dick LeBeau or Bill Belichick. What you're doing is feeding him to the wolves.

December 21, 2007  10:27 AM ET

You can add Philip Rivers to that list of good quarterbacks too(I know he hasn't had a great year, but I still think he'll become a very good player). Even Drew Brees sat and watched during his rookie year in San Diego.

What do you mean there was no talent on the team when Parcells first got there Bah? That was actually their best season under Big Bill, they went 10-6 and went to the playoffs with Quincy freakin' Carter under center.

I'm not saying Romo should have been starting as a Rook, clearly he shouldn't have. By his second season he should have been getting some snaps, though. The revolving QB door wasn't just QC, VT, and Bledsoe. There was also Chad Hutchison and Drew Henson as well. Every scrub they could find was getting a shot except the kid with the most talent and smallest pay check.
