I'm not arguing Cunningham as a first ballot
Not only did he usher in an age of diversity at qb but Cunningham served as the herald of a new era of fleet footed, mobile quarterbacks. While many remember him for his athleticism, Cunningham actually had a better passer rating than quarterbacks Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, John Elway, Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw, etc.
Then, Cunningham returned from retirement as a 35 year old with a re-invernted game with the 1998 Vikings, who came a FG away from a trip to the Super Bowl and had Terrell Davis not run for 2,000 yards would have been the NFL MVP.

QB Rating is an overrated stat.......
Did ya know his QB Rating is same as Jeff Blake who had same Rating as Fran Tarkenton......
Out of those 3 who would you take???
Tarkenton is hands down the best of those 3 QB's......
Cunningham was a very good QB but HOF material??? I dont think so and I dont think we induct him because other QB's got in that didnt deserve it
Aikman, Elway and Moon were all better than him......
Bradshaw and Namath??? Debate-able for sure
D.J. Dunson said 12/23, 09:14 AM
U say Namath and Bradhaw are debateable yet, they were definitive hall of famers. Passer rating aside, Cunninham won the MVP award twice, and his +73 touchdown to interception margin was higher than Warren Moon, Troy Aikman, Bradshaw, Namath and was slightly lower than Elway and Tarkenton.
. Statistics aren't the only barometer for a hall of Famer. As a playmaker Cunningham made HOF-worthy plays displaying his superior talent including his ducking under a Bruce Smith sack in his own endzone, eluding pressure then connecting on a 95 yard TD pass.
Cunningham was a prototype that unlike Vick was a great decision maker who only scrambled when necessary.
djroxalot said 12/23, 10:48 AM
Namath, 50%, 27,663 yards in 140 games= 197 yards per game, 173 TD's and 220 INT's=very questionable if he should have ever sniffed the HOF......1 season where had more TD's than INT's.....
Bradshaw, 51.9%, 27,989 in 168 games=166.6 ypg, 212 TD's, 210 INT's......He is a better argument than Namath
Cunnigham isnt a HOF caliber QB.....Never considered 1 of the best of his era (generally HOF'er are)
D.J. Dunson said 12/23, 05:40 PM
But the fact is that they did. Cunningham's stamp on the game was bigger than numbers.
djroxalot said 12/24, 07:49 AM
Just because mistake's were made (Namath) doesnt mean we induct very good players into the Hall of Fame......Its not the Hall of Very Good......And I loved Cunningham as a QB......
But he wasnt considered an elite QB of his era like Elway, Montana and Marino were......
Jim Kelly didnt deserve to get in but he did......

(struggles to control himself over the Jim Kelly comment)
Ok, I'm good now.
I was undecided about RC, but I followed rox's argument a little better. Hall of Very Good would be PACKED with players, Hall of Fame is a step up.

gotta go dj on this one... the Hall is getting bloated with good/not great QBs at the behest of defense and other offensive positions (esp. O-line)...

He lost me when he said Namath was a definitive Hall of Famer. Well, he lost me when he said Cunningham was a hall of famer, but I regress. Cunningham didn't "usher in diversity". There were many black football players before and since him.
And DJ didn't say Kelly is a lesser QB than Warren Moon. He said he'd take Moon over him. personal preference. That's all. I'd take him over Kelly also.

You had my vote all the way until you said Kelly didn't belong. Sometimes you go out on a limb to make a point, and I give you credit for that, but Jim Kelly was an absolute lock for the Hall.

"Cunningham didn't "usher in diversity". There were many black football players before and since him."
But how many black QBs? That's what he was talking about.
The only "big name" black QB that started before Cunningham that I can think of was Doug Williams, and he's only best known for Super Bowl XXII.
Cunningham paved the way for Vick, Young, Garrard, Jackson, etc.

Namath is in because of he was instrumental in proving the AFL could compete with the big boys. Also he was the first household name from football.
I know his stats weren't great.

Cunningham was the first "Mobile" QB. He deserves consideration on that basis.
