For those of you that don???t know, Stockton holds the record for most career assists 15,806 by a considerable margin, as well as the record for most career steals 3,265.

Stockton missed 22 games his entire career. Yes only 22 out of 1526. How many other point guards can say that?

Stockton consistently averaged a high amount of assists. There have been 9 seasons where a player had 1,000 or more assists, 7 of the 9 times it was by Stockton. He also led the league in assists for nine consecutive seasons.

Look at today???s elite point guards, excluding Steve Nash. Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, Gilbert Arenas, Allen Iverson, and Tony Parker all are so much more scoring orientated. Stockton averaged 13.1 points throughout his career. Even Tony Parker averages about 20 per game.

The only real threat to Stockton???s assist category is Steve Nash, but even he has a very long shot of beating Stockton???s record. Nash right now in his career has roughly 5,890 assists; at the same time in Stockton???s career he had 10,394. Steve Nash has a lot of work to do in order to catch up, especially since he is not getting any younger.

All records are breakable.

I do think that his records will be broken someday, but I don't think they will be broken by anybody playing today. Whoever it is, has yet to enter the NBA. Maybe it's some 5 year old somewhere...

Many "unbreakable" records have fallen. For example Gehrig's consecutive game streak. Nobody thought that would fall then along came Cal Junior.

Records are made to be broken but is there anyone that you can see that will do it. I cant, there is no one that is consistent for 20 years that will do what Stock did. They have to be able to be selfless and care more about the team then themselves.

Now, records are made to be broken though. Every new generation of basketball players is generally a little bit more athletic, so with more time a new Stockton could come along. But how long will it be before a player who thinks pass first, has a group of competent players around him, and plays as long as Stockton did? I am not sure if it will ever happen. At first I believed that his record would be broken eventually but the more I line up the facts, the less likely it seems. So in the end, I doubt it will ever happen. So while the Jazz continue to struggle, just take comfort in the fact that Stocktons records are safe.

Stockton's records are safe for the time being but I believe that someday someone will come along and break them. There might be some Chinese (or other nationality) kid in a village somewhere that thinks passing the rock is the best thing to do in the whole world. We don't know.

It may be 15 years from now, it may be 80 years from now. To me, there is no reason to believe that a superior assist man may not come along in the future.

I just dont think it will happen for a long time. You have to get a player to play about 20 years and be consistent.

Stockton???s assist mark will stand forever, mark my words. Simply put there will never be another player like him, although I like to watch Steve Nash play, and see some similarities of toughness. Stockton didn???t ever chip teeth or bloody his nose quiet so much, but then again he had Malone to keep other players in line.

Records are made to be broken. Nobody thought Lou Gehrig's record of consecutive games played would ever be broken.

The NBA game now is scoring oriented. As for players in today's day, perhaps we do not have that individual that will break Stockton's records. There will come a time, when the game will change again, and become a team oriented game again, the type of league that Stockton flourished in, and there will be a player that will change the game back to the way it was with Stockton, with unselfish play, a desire to make his team better by sacrificing scoring records and making others around him better.

It may not be one individual, however history is against Stockton and all record holders. Another thing that could impact the chase for Stockton's records is expansion. Giving someone a chance to flourish against less quality opponents. And who knows what the future may hold, the NBA could always add more games to the schedule, increasing the chance of someone generating more assists.

History repeats itself, and it will continue to do so, and eventually, in the end, Stockton's records will be surpassed.

Records get broken, point in fact New England is about to break Miami's Perfect season record.

December 26, 2007  04:50 PM ET

That's not an absolute certainty. Those records are not protected by law. Theoretically, they are breakable.

You gotta be concise and get across all parameters of the debate in your TD topic, joe... the topic (or resolution) sets all the ground rules for what what direction the debate will take. Further, you have the opportunity to set those boundaries again in your first statement. They give you 1200 characters to use for a reason...

Jazinho gets my vote...

williams and paul are not more scoring oriented at all. they are like nash in that they both score and pass. Chris paul is a little to injury prone but someone like him could come along anytime. D williams has a great chance too. regardless someone will do it.

How do you break a perfect record? They will match the perfect season, and break the record for most wins in a complete season without a loss.

Your right Paulie. You can't break a perfect record. It's like trying to eat an Oreo without milk, you can't do it.
