Yes the Pats would. The 49ers' secondary was an elite group, but it's weakness versus the Pats would be it relied on strengh and powerful hits it would not be able to catch up with the Pats fast paced passing offense. The 49ers offense though is a different matter they would probably pick apart an earlier Patriots d, but lately the Pats have moved from 32nd in red zone defense to 22nd and they rank 2nd in points allowed at 15.9 and rank fourth in yds given up at a respectable 286.5 yds per game, also it is hard to compare two areas because the players are different today's players are bigger, stronger, faster than they were 18 years ago, so yes I would take the Pats by a touchdown.

im a pats fan but id have to go with the 49er on this because..they won with great defence and a bussness man type offence. there zone coverage was one of the best in there era...and moss going over the middle dont think thats gonna happen to much with the hard hitting ronnie lott and we know what happens when moss gets hit to much and getting after brady well you saw what the eagles did to him..now picture a young charlies haley and bill romanowski getting after brady. and george seifert wasnt to shabby a head coach either....now the bussness like offence can you say jerry rice in his prime remember at ths time he was the best hands down. roger craig, and rathman did dazzle you but they go the job done by wearing out defences then is was taylor and rice ticking you apart and the dont forget the good son brent jones.. think the game would be close but the 49ers would end up on top for one reason joe montana

Yaeh but the Pats win with passes that are based on what the defense gives them. Usually in the normal 3, or 4 receiver set the Pats have a safety valve(for your pass rushers(probably Faulk)), a short to medium receiver for a five yder(probably hammer-head Welker), then one or two first down and more receivers(Stallworth and Moss). The fast recievers would fly around the slow, but still powerful 49er secondary. This would probably make the 49ers defense like the Pats who rely on big hits and stops. The Pats d is anything from perfect so I think J. Montana would pick them apart, with his specatular receivers, although I don't think they mesaure up to the Pats' receivers.Did u watch SportsCenter today the Big Tuna and the Shawun both agreed the Pats would win and I think they both know a lot more football than we do.

the 9er are a great team in an era when the players played with everthing they had and the refferees didnt throw the flag when lott would knock a reciever into next year...montana can you say anything more..sure the pats have great wideouts but what made the 9ers secondary so dam good was the pass rush that alway made the qb rush his throws and make bad choices..so i know 1 thing i wouldve love to watch that game for sure

Yeah the 49ers would have been called for flags. Did I mention the Pats are undefeated and your 9ers lost to 10-6 Packers team that failed to make the playoffs, they also lost to 11-5 Rams team. The pats played in a harder era, where the players are bigger, stronger, and faster than they used to be, and what do you know there undefeated.

interesting I could make a case for the Pats....but in my heart it says the 89 9ers would win...as soon as ronnie lott hit moss he is out of the game....

I agree with 9ers. Lott knocks Moss out of the game first time across the middle.

I am a Cowboys fan so no homerism here, but I don't think the Pats D could contain Bill Walsh's offense. Moss would be a non factor after a couple of early hits by Lott. It's well known that while Moss is a freak of nature, he doesn't like to get hit and when teams pound him early in the game he tends to be a non factor later. Advantage 49ers.

When you think of great defenses, the 89' 49'ers are not even in the top 10, all time. You see that D containing the most productive offense in NFL history? And as long as I have seen Belichick coach, I have seen him game plan and shut down great offensive teams, 93 Bills, 01 Rams & 03 Colts.
Lott would not even touch Moss, watch the games, when have you seen Moss go over the middle at all this year? The Pats would spread that D out and light them up.

hey you like saying undefeated lol ya they are but i do think this era is tougher back then the quality of the teams were more spread out as opposed to now each division really has 1 team in front and the rest are just around for the scraps
