I will say Stanford over #1 USC at the time. Stanford comes stumbling in at 1-3 against 4-0 USC. Stanford came in with back up quarterback Pritchard starting. The whole season Stanford was beat up forcing them to start 2nd and 3rd string players at key positions. Stanford was also a 41 point underdog on the road against the #1 team at the time in USC. USC did not have Booty in that game but either did Stanford. Then Stanford is down 6 with 2 minutes on 4th and a lot and convert and score on the road in USC is unheard of. The only game that compare to this is Michigan and App St. but Michigan was not the #1 team at the time and it was the 1st game of the season and it is always a struggle the 1st week.

It was App. State over #5 Michigan that was the biggest upset of the year. Michigan wasn't number one, but App. State is from a whole other division. And unlike USC, Michigan had all of their playmakers in the game. This game was also a very close one and was capped off with one of the best and memorable plays of the year when App. State's Corey Lynch blocks the Michigan's kicker's kick. And this game will also be remembered for more years to come than the Stanford-USC game.
Jasonbash said 12/29, 04:48 PM
Yes, but it is often forgotten that even though App. State comes from a different division they have won their title for at least back to back years. They are no bad team in that division. They could probably could beat some of the teams that are in D1. Yes but Stanford had to convert on two 4th down conversions in USC to win the game. Not to mention they were not easy 4th down conversions. I believe one of them was a 4th and 20 and the other was a 4th and goal. The 4th and 20 Pritchard was on his own because the play did not come in from the sidelines. It was also Pritchard first start and normally in those situations rookie mistakes are shown but not here. Stanford scored 17 points in the 4th quarter making this the best upset of college football this season.
LYNCHisOUTtoGETyouONElastTIME said 12/29, 05:36 PM
Yea, App. State has won their title back to back years, but if they were good enough to be in D1, they'd already be there, not stuck in D1AA. This is like comparing FIU beating LSU and U of Delaware beating Georgia. U of Delaware beating Georgia would be more impressive because they're in a whole different division. Even if App State beat someone like Notre Dame, it would still be impressive.
Jasonbash said 12/30, 12:05 PM
You still have to take into consideration the fact that Stanford has a first year coach and a back up quarterback starting in this game. I am a Stanford fan and going into USC and winning is very rare. Not to mention that USC had a long home winning streak. Sure you have App. State on the first week but you don't see too many upsets against a #1 in midway through the season.
LYNCHisOUTtoGETyouONElastTIME said 12/30, 09:56 PM
Don't underestimate the talent of a first year coach at a different college (Jim Tressel). And winning at the Big House, I think, is more impressive than winning in USC. The Big House is one of the most toughest places to play, all though it doesn't look like it when Ohio State plays them. Also, one last thing, your last sentence is fiction. There were a lot of upsets to the #1 teams this year compared to other years.

Appalachian State plays in I-AA. They lose to other I-AA teams. It's a little misleading when someone says that they've won three I-AA championships in a row, because in I-A you have to be almost perfect to get to the championship game, while I-AA is playoff based. And history was made when App State won against Michigan (no I-AA had beat a ranked opponent before).
I'm tired of hearing Stanford was the bigger upset.

App St. definitely!
USC was favored over Stanford by 21. That number is just a number the bookies made because of what they thought they would have to put down to keep an even number of bettors betting on each side of a number.
It was made early and obviously did not take into account all the injuries USC had just before this game.
USC is healthy now and Illinois will rue the day they got chosen to play in the Rose Bowl.

Booty started the game. He was injured midway through the 2nd quarter.

I gurantee you that App. State could beat Stanford. Not only that, but we soon saw that Michigan never deserved that 5 ranking. It was a PRE-SEASON ranking, which means absolutely nothing. It became clear that Michigan wasnt a top 5 team, or a top 20 for that matter...

App. State loses to other D1AA schools, its not like they're going undefeated every year.

just because a school in D-2 is good enough to be in D-1 they can't...its the size of the school that puts them in that Division...

the michigan collapse was the biggest upset. stanford-usc wasn't even CLOSE to the biggest upset. pitt beating west virginia was a FAR bigger upset than stanford-usc too.

It's Stanford over USC. Even a lot of the commentators agreed that the App State win paled in comparison to Stanford upsetting USC at home. App State got all the hype because it was the upset that kicked off the year of the upset, but USC-Stanford was an upset for the ages.
Jason, I don't think you can win this one, but you've picked the right upset as #1.

App St, the little school that could. A division II over a major division I school.
USC's qb Booty went down and USC really never had one decent running back. The bookies giving Stanford 21 points was ridiculous.

The official line on the USC game was 41 points at kickoff. By Vegas numbers, this was the single biggest upset in history. App St was a 26.5 point underdog.
Also, Stanford was playing its BACKUP quarterback against a team that hadn't lost at home in six years. The App State upset was huge, no doubt. But App St is a great team, a championship team who won the playoff the last three years in a row. To me it's sad that what Stanford accomplished will always be overshadowed by App St's win, simply because App St carries the Div I-FCS label.
