Brett Favre will retire after this season

A lot of the pundits, 'experts', etc. seem to think that it's a given that Favre will be coming back next year. They point to the fact that this is a young team that will be better next year, and that Favre is having fun again so there's no reason for him not to come back.

I think they're wrong ... reasons to follow after someone accepts this challenge.

Should Favre retire? Maybe
Will Favre retire? Don't bet on it.

Every season Brett has given clues that he was going to hang them up at the end of the season, and each season he eventually decided to come back. This year he is dropping hints that he will be back.

He has a young team around him, a coach that he clearly is getting along with, and a shot at another Super Bowl.

The Packers are only going up from here, they are very young, I can see Brett riding with this team for another season easily.

He is a competitor, one of those guys that thrives on competition. Football to Brett is like an addiction, and if he didn't get out when he had no team around him why get out now that the Pack are actually good?

The team is already planning on his return next season, something that they have not done in years past. I'm thinking that the decision has already been made.

There are three components to my argument:

First, the age thing. He's 38 years old. He's played 250+ straight games. He'll be playing at least 17, if not 19 games this season. While I'm sure he'd love to play forever, he can't help but feel the injuries he's been suffering of late.

Second, the next season thing. Yes, it's a young, good team. But there are many reasons to think that next year 10-6 might be a challenge:
A) The schedule. No soft AFC West and NFC East (the teams in the East got better as the season went on; by playing them early, the Packers caught a huge break). Instead, they'll be playing the AFC South (possibly three playoff teams this year AND next year) and NFC South (mixed bag). Also, instead of lousy St. Louis and Carolina teams, they get Dallas and Seattle by virtue of winning the division.
B) The competition. Minnesota will be better next year. Dallas will be better. Washington (although they won't play them until the playoffs, if at all) will be better. The Pats and Colts will be just as good, and the Chargers will look better than this year. Making the Super Bowl will be a lot harder in 2008 than in 2007.

rest to follow in next post

The age thing isn't a huge deal right now. He has a better team around him so he isn't taking the beatings that he used to take back there. Also see Vinny T this season, you can play past 38. And as long as you can play age is only a number.

Now on to your schedule, you are forgetting what this season's schedule looked like a year ago.

-The AFC West was supposed to be MUCH better, SD was just 14-2, KC was a playoff team, and Denver improved almost everywhere. This past off-season you would be hard pressed to find someone that would call that a cake schedule.

-St. Louis was picked by most people as a contender for the NFC crown.

So you never know how teams will turn out, I don't think he will base his decision on next season's schedule.

As it looks now, Brett is starting in the Pro-Bowl, breaking every record in the books, and on a contender.

Walking away from a sport isn't as easy as it seems, see Michael Jordan, Emmett Smith, Deion Sanders, I could go on. It is even harder when you are still at the top of the game.

Favre hasn't mentioned retirement at all this season, in most other years he has said that he will think about it. TRUST ME he will be back.

"As it looks now, Brett is starting in the Pro-Bowl, breaking every record in the books, and on a contender."

And that's the 3rd component of my argument. After the last two seasons, 2007 must've felt like a godsend. If it wasn't for Brady, he'd be the MVP. Pro Bowl, playoffs, possible shot at a Super Bowl. The only way it could get better is if the Packers win it all.

Unless the Packers lose by 30 to the Giants in Lambeau, there's no way anyone could criticize Favre's season, and even in the unlikelihood Brett gets outdueled by Eli Manning, there probably wouldn't be much criticism.

Brett Favre wants to go out on top. He did not enjoy 4-12. 8-8 wasn't much fun either until the end of the season. He's looking at a surprising 13-3 or 12-4, and maybe one last shot at a ring. Once you've had steak, you don't want hamburger. Next year is an unknown. The competition may be tougher. The injuries might strike. Favre might get injured (I believe the one thing he wants is to end the consecutive game streak by choice, not injury). Get out now while the gettin' is good.

And finally, Brett Favre will retire because no one expects him to.

Not the worst argument I have ever seen, but you are not taking Brett Favre's love of the game into consideration.

If you have ever played a sport, I mean seriously played a sport. The hardest thing in the world is to walk away. At this level it is all you know.

Brett came back at 4-12, it isn't about records for this guy, or going out on top. He LOVES to play. If he were all business he would not sprint down the field and pick up his WR on a TD pass. He is clearly having fun, and when you are having fun you don't just quit.

Do yourself a favor and listen to a Favre interview, he doesn't seem to worry about his age. He doesn't play to break records, he plays just to play all of that stuff just makes it more fun.

While I am not the biggest Favre fan, I will admit that he is playing for all of the right reasons. Favre may be 38, but he looks similar to an 8 year old in the back yard.

Ack, just my luck ... maybe I should forfeit now ...

December 29, 2007  08:37 PM ET

haha, if you don't want me to take it I'll decline

December 29, 2007  08:38 PM ET

No, that's ok. :) Bring it on!

i have a question about the game, I know it is on NBC and CBS, but are they just showing the NFLN broadcast?

We have the game on, but only on one station.

December 29, 2007  08:54 PM ET

BSchwartz: Yes, it's a simulcast. Same NFLN announcers, hence the mute button.

December 29, 2007  08:58 PM ET

Something I couldn't fit in the post: for the NFC South, the Packers play at New Orleans and Tampa Bay (the two good teams) while Carolina and Atlanta (both likely lousy next season) are coming to Lambeau. The Pack would much rather have it the other way.

The ONLY way I see Favre hanging them up this year is with a Super Bowl ring...and that's not likely.

December 29, 2007  09:03 PM ET

Denver should have kept Hixon, they have the longest streak of returns without a TD

December 29, 2007  09:13 PM ET

BSchwartz, I have 5 less wins than you, but way more losses.

December 29, 2007  09:14 PM ET

Favre will play next year. He still looks like he loves playing it and loves playing the game still. I want him to continue playing.

December 29, 2007  09:35 PM ET

I think the Patriots have gotten bored with routing their opponents, and are trying to FG the Giants to death.

December 29, 2007  09:43 PM ET

BTW, I watch pretty much every single Favre interview, and the one thing I've gotten out of it is how stunned he is by how the team is doing. Some of his comments are pretty weird (to the point that someone else on the team could even be offended).

December 29, 2007  10:39 PM ET

"Ack, just my luck ... maybe I should forfeit now ..."

LMAO - was it his record or his icon that scared you?

...and you did a swell job of making som valid points... not enough to get my vote, but a good try none the less...

"LMAO - was it his record or his icon that scared you?"

It was the fact that he has taken on Peter King in the past. That's experience.

December 29, 2007  11:30 PM ET

Ok the freaky bug with a tie is scaring me

December 29, 2007  11:39 PM ET

Technically, he's an evil bookworm. At the same time, however, he is a desert hallucination of a good bookworm. So you don't need to fear him.

Too much.
