The Big East does not deserve BCS or "major" status.

Not only was it a "too little, too late" reaction to the expansion craze in the early 1990s--Penn State had sought to become a member earlier, but the Big East wasn't interested in being anything as tawdry and disreputable as a "football conference"at the time--but its membership proved extremely ephemeral, with the strongest football programs being sucked away by the ACC scarcely a decade after its formation, and the weakest being embarrassingly demoted, despite being one of the traditional basketball powers in this traditional basketball conference.

In order to preserve its semblance of dignity, the Big East recruited mid-major schools Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, and had prospective member Connecticut make the jump from mid-major earlier than planned. Still, the conference consists of only eight teams, and has little lasting identity as a football conference.

Given the fact that half of the members are mid-major transplants, and that despite the increasing competitive nature of the conference, the Big East has largely failed to distinguish itself from the stronger mid-major conferences such as the MWC, the Big East should not receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl.

This will be simple and quick,

Have you watched football this season at all?

-If so you would have seen South Florida take down Auburn and North Carolina, West Virginia beat Miss State and Maryland, Cincy beat Oregon State, Louisville Beat NC State, U Conn beat Duke (I know Duke is bad, but still ACC), ALL BSC schools that fell to Big East teams.

-Also the Big East did not lose a single bowl last year including those BCS bowls they "shouldn't be in" (shows their strength vs. the other conferences)

-Had Pitt not pulled off an upset the Big East would have a team in the title game this year.

-The Big East has 3 teams in the top 25, the Big 10 has 3 teams in the top 25

-The Big East also has 3 teams that did not lose a SINGLE non-conference game this year.

You may not like the Big East, but they are deserving of their BCS status.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Big East will never win another football "national championship." Note that the Big East has only existed as a football conference for 16 years or so, and that the only team to win a national championship in football as a member of the "Big East" (Miami) has since left the conference. The reason Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College left was a perceived weakness (as they saw it...I'm just adding my perception to theirs) of the Big East, and the stated aim of the ACC to become more of a "football" conference.

I liked the old Big East. The one with Boston College. I would have liked it more had it formed earlier, when it SHOULD have, when Penn State wanted to join.

You're right, I don't like it now. And it doesn't deserve an automatic berth any more than the MWC or WAC does. If that means the MWC and WAC deserve automatic berths, that's another throwdown. But I stand by my argument. The Big East as a football conference is at mid-major level. I see Boise State, Hawaii, and BYU as the peers of the Big East schools, not LSU, USC, or Oklahoma.

Miami? You know they are pretty awful right now?

To say that the Big East will NEVER win a title is not only wrong but silly.
West Virginia was an upset away from a shot at the title THIS YEAR! Saying that is like coming out and saying that the Big 10 will never win a title.

You may have liked the Big East more in the early 90's, but in the early 90's the ACC was Florida State's stomping grounds, and Nebraska was the team to beat. Unfortunately for you it ISN'T the early 90's, it isn't even the early 00's.

South Florida is a new program on the rise Cincinnati is on the way up as well, just signed their coach long term. Pitt has one of the better young RB's in the game. Trust me this conference will continue to be good.

I don't understand where you are coming from, sure the Big East may not have the history of the SEC or Big 12, but history is just that history. No one has more history than Army and Navy, so should they be BCS teams?

Yup. 5-7. Too bad, dat. (I'm an FSU alum).

I guess that means their 2001-02 smackdown of Nebraska should be wiped from the Big East's records, now that they're not good enough for the Big East? ;-)

Again, I don't see ANY of the current schools--West Virginia included--being able to survive a regular season, much less a title game. The power schools have left the building.

South Florida is out of place. Literally. Unless the Big East adds Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, and Florida International. I wouldn't put it past them, by the way... they already cherry-picked the mid-majors for their new members, because they coudn't get any from "majors". In a sense, the ACC proved its superiority in that regard... it didn't have to go to mid-majors to get its new members.

Pitt and Syracuse *were* powers. As independents. ;-) Not as members of the Big East. West Virginia was also an independent the last time it came this close.

The Big 10 (11) has been around a bit longer than the Big East, as a football conference. Of course I wouldn't say the Big 10 won't win a national championship. It's got the track record. It also got Penn State. They've got a track record, too.

Well for fans of Big East teams I'm glad they don't rely on you for their hopes for next season. Lucky for them they can put their hopes on the fact that the Big East has had success against other BCS schools

NCAA football is no longer a 2 to 3 horse race every season, parity rules. And don't be shocked to see the Big East take advantage of that.

Mountain West is not FBS...

December 29, 2007  09:38 PM ET

Well...Wake DID beat UCONN 24-10 today, but BS makes some very good points...

December 29, 2007  09:39 PM ET

agreed, SuperSquirrel. Hence the term "mid-major".

December 29, 2007  09:40 PM ET

Yeah, but Wake is DA BOMB! Woo! (They would've beaten Nebraska if Riley Skinner hadn't missed the game. Sigh)

December 29, 2007  09:40 PM ET

The Big East has been around since 1979...

December 29, 2007  09:41 PM ET

MWC is FBS, but not BCS. They're also not FCS (Go ASU!).

December 29, 2007  09:41 PM ET

KansasToonami must like the Big East, or he must hate the Big East. Not exactly sure since all three of his throwdowns tonight have been about the Big East.

December 29, 2007  09:42 PM ET

For those with short memories (less than one year), this is from Wikipedia's article on the Big East:

"After the completion of the regular season, Pittsburgh received the Big East???s automatic BCS berth with a #21 ranking. In the Fiesta Bowl, Pitt was defeated, 35-7, by the undefeated #6 Utah, the first team from a non-BCS conference (the Mountain West) to qualify for the lucrative bowls."

December 29, 2007  09:45 PM ET

My bad, ChrTh... didn't see that, got my acronyms in a twist. Of course MWC is FBS. unless Supersquirrel was *intending* to diss the MWC big-time... ;-)

December 29, 2007  09:45 PM ET

Not in football, Esco. This throwdown be about the oval-shaped rock.

December 29, 2007  09:47 PM ET

woops, meant BCS...so yeah...got ya toonami

December 29, 2007  09:48 PM ET

Lessee.... I hate the *current* Big East. I hate the *current* ACC (see my third of three throwdowns). That's the extent of it... geographically absurd conferences (my major is geography, I tend to notice things like that.

I don't have a gripe with the Big 10, unless it adds Syracuse. The SEC is fine and dandy, so is the Big 12. The Pac 10 hasn't changed membership in 30 years.

December 29, 2007  09:50 PM ET

yeah, but Kanas with modern travel it is all about better matchups than just teams that are close.

December 29, 2007  09:53 PM ET

Ah, you are correct Kansas.

December 29, 2007  10:07 PM ET

yup, might as well have USC join the Big East, then, BScwhartz... not that I'd mind seeing them go. (also a UCLA alum)

I understand the "matchup" thing, it's played havoc with some of the conferences. But then explain why the non-conference schedules are so pathetic? OSU schedules Miami-OH or Kent State, and LSU schedules Louisiana-Lafayette? It's just not consistent, actually it's quite hypocritical.

December 29, 2007  10:09 PM ET

Modern travel is why a Pennsylvania school is in the B10...

I will also go out on a limb. The ACC will never win a BCS title either.

December 29, 2007  10:16 PM ET

I'll say the SEC will never win on, it's big 10 and pac 10 from here till forever. jk
