It has got to be Ron Zook. Now let me start by saying that I decided on him before he was name Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year.
Now I see three possible choices that could be argued very well, but I will not name the other two as of right now.
He has done an amazing job with this program in such a short amount of time. His team showed some signs of success last year in the game against Ohio State, but they were pretty bad outside of that one game. Their only three losses came to one elite team, one good team, and one team that they should have crushed. But that happened a lot this year, so you can't really fault them for that. There only wins last year came against a Michigan State and Eastern Illinois. They got shut out by Rutgers. They also had losses against Cuse, Indiana, Northwestern, and Ohio, none of which was very good.
Juice Williams came into the season as a decent player, and Zook turned him into a fantastic quarterback. And while Mendenhall was already a good player, Zook made him into one of the nation's elite backs.
He has turned a terrible team into a top fifteen team with a chance to win the Rose Bowl. No team had a better turn around this season in the Big Ten

I'm going with Mark Dantonio, the turnaround at Mich. St is very good. Maybe not as impressive as at Illinois, but I'll tell you what Illinois has had Zook for a bit of time now what 3 years? Not as short as this year which is all Dantonio had. Zook's been recruiting for a bit, and Mendenhall and Juice have been in the program for two years now, and this team showed signs of breaking out last year. And last year Illinois beat this MSU team. Ilinois was pathetic last year, but they were a team on the rise. MSU just looked confused, and collapsed at season's end again. And this team made their first bowl game since 2003? and they won their last couple of games, which was a rarity in the Smith era. To turnaround not only a team, but a whole program, in one year that's something. And Juice fantastic? More like good runner eratic passer. And Mich. St. showed some real heart in their losses, unlike Illinois who came out flat against Mich., and woke up late against Mizzou. I know Zook gets acclaim, but I'm going with Dantonio. and how impressive was that bowl performance against BC? I know they had the 4 picks, but they still played good against a heavily favored team. Ill. might not..

Maybe I went a little far if I called Juice Williams fantastic. I realize that is a mistake.
Now no doubt Dantonio has done a great job this year, but Michigan State was
While Mendenhall and Juice did start to break out last year, they were never really thought that highly of until this season. Zook turned Mendenhall into a Heisman contender, while he finally got Juice some respect. He has done a great job turning Arrelious Benn, a true freshman, into a big time playmaker this season.
Danotonio did a nice job with some new pieces, especially after losing Drew Stanton, who I always thought was underrated, but just about every single part of Illinois is young. Young and inexperienced.
Last year Michigan State managed four wins, making this season only a three game improvement. But this team was extremely close to being bowl eligable. If not for very close losses against Purdue and at Penn State, this team could have gone to a lower tier bowl. Illinois was nowhere near bowl eligable.
Michigan State had one "big" win this season, against a falling apart Penn State team. Zook went from losing to Ohio to beating Ohio State in one year.

Well, there are a couple of things in your argument I can point out....
1) I never heard Mendenhall even considered in the Heisman race. I must live under a rock...
2)Arrelious Benn is an athletic freshman, that means two things. 2a) A coach can't teach athleticism. 2b) And if he is a true freshman, Zook didn't turn him from nothing to something.
3)Illinois is young and unexperienced- Yes, but all that youth was recruited by Mr. Zook, therefore he was able to do more with his own recruits, than Dantonio who had to work with Smith's.
4)Mich. St was close to being bowl eligible last year- Yes, but they collapsed again. That is the coach's fault for not keeping his team focused. Dantonio did not let them collapse, instead they beat PSU at the end, something they haven't done in 3 seasons! Remember we are talking about Coach of the Year, not most improved team or coach. Zook on the other hand, had a young team, that also had a close loss to PSU last year, and was leading for much of the game against PSU at Happy Valley. And in the year of the upset, beating OSU can not be accredited to Zook. Remember Zook wanted to punt on that 4th down, whereas Juice convinced him to go for it.

1. What I meant by that Mendenhall comment is that he will be a Heisman contender next year.
2. Zook brought Benn in and made him an impact player right away. You can't come in and make an impact without good coaching. High school football and college football are very different, and the transition is tough for anyone. Any breakout freshman are good because they are coached well.
3. How well someone is able to bring in recruits over the spring should be considered. It is a part of the season. Dantonio had a few months to recruit. While that may not be much, it is still plenty of time to sway recruits away from other programs. Without a signed letter of intent, it is easy to change your mind as to where you want to go.
4. Penn State won by two touchdowns over Illinois last year, not four points like they did against Michigan State. The Spartans defense was able to mess with Tony Hunt, a very reliable back who didn't make mistakes. While the award is not for most improved team, it helps Zook's case that his team made a much bigger improvement than the Spartans did.
And if Zook felt that the right move on that play was to punt, he would have punted. People change their minds.
Anthony E-is out. said 12/31, 10:30 PM
Haha I see what you meant. And by the way, PSU only beat Illinois by two touchdowns that year, because Anthony Sdirotto returned an onside kick for a td, and they returned a pick at the end. So it was much closer than the score indicated. But you can't teach athleticism in Benn's case, so I don't attribute that to Zook. And you heard what Zook told Juice. "If you don't get this...I'll kill you!" Juice ran for the fourth down, not Zook. Great td, bigdleech!

The other two I was thinking of were Jim Tressel and Bill Lynch at Indiana.

Wow - didn't see that choice coming.
I thought about Tressel, but OSU anything is a suicidal TD in Fan nation, reserved for those of us dedicated to preserving our "Pristine" no win records.

Nice arguments Anthony. To be honest, I don't really feel that I put my best arguments forward on this throwdown. You made a good and very gutsy pick, and it looks like it payed off. I had fun throwing down with you. If you ever want to do this again, I am up for it.

Hey, I had a great time, and I could see I kind of threw you off with my pick. Seems like people voted for me because I chose a pick no one saw coming and defended it well. Your arguments were great. And I'm always up for a challenge.

Yeah, I honestly didn't think of Dantonio when I made this throwdown. I assumed you would choose Tressel. Three years from now when Greg Schiano, after Paterno retires, leads Penn State to a national title, Zook won't even be considered for this award. He will let that program fall apart in a year or two.

No Tressel has great talent, and those are his recruits. Same with Zook, which is why I accepted this, because I knew I could argue well for Dantonio. Again great td, and great job.

Evan Royster for Heisman!

Yeah, him or Daryl Clark. How about Derrick Williams? I actually prefer that no one from PSU wins the Heisman. Instead we win at least a Big Ten Title, and a BCS berth!

How about the Heisman, Big Ten title, and National title?
To be honest, I would want to see Butler win it more than Williams. Deion has had a much tougher road getting to this point, being a walk-on, and Williams was a five star recruit. Penn State should have more than one Heisman anyway. My boy Kerry Collins should have won it in '94, either him or Carter.

Ki Jana or Collins. And Butler is actually a better pure wr than williams.
