Even though Philip Rivers has been undefeated when facing the Broncos, he is not one of the main reasons why he is undefeated. It's because of guys like LT, Antonio Gates, their line, and their defense. Jay Cutler has never won against the Chargers, but, he is still a better QB. He is is a better all-around QB, good in the pocket, even better out of the pocket.

The title of this throwdown is nothing but an attack on rivers. Sure you stated that his supporting cast does all the work, but thats ironic seeing as how bailey and company do all the work for cutler. Before cutler began starting at denver the broncos hadnt had a losing season since 99. Before Rivers began starting for the chargers they had never experienced a 14-2 season. Whether your supporting casts help or not number dont lie. Jay cutler has 19 interceptions in 21 career starts. Its not about who covers whos **** but more of whos less of a liability. Cutler threw an interception in every one of his starts until half way through the 07 season.

I don't have to attack Rivers to say that Cutler is a better QB. And one reason why Rivers did have a better start to his career is that he sat for 2 years in front of a great QB in Drew Brees. Jay Cutler had only a little bit than more than half a season to start. Before that, he was a backup to a choke artist. The only reason Philip Rivers is starting and that the Chargers don't have Drew Brees is because Rivers and his agent bitched to the Chargers that they either get the starting position or trade Rivers. I'm going to give some comparison stats between Rivers and Cutler over the last 2 years:

Completion %: Cutler- 62.6% Rivers-61%
Ave: Cutler-7.4 Rivers-7.1
QB Rating: Cutler-88.2 Rivers-87.2

I couldn't compare non average stats because Cutler hasn't played 2 full seasons. But, Cutler had more yards this season than Rivers's last 2 seasons, had 1 less INT this season, only 1 less TD this season.

Which brings me to my point. When their statistics are as close as they are-

Completion %: Cutler- 62.6% Rivers-61%
Ave: Cutler-7.4 Rivers-7.1
QB Rating: Cutler-88.2 Rivers-87.2

then their skills derive from the success of their team. Which basically means which quarterback has had a had more wins while starting. Thats one statistic that might have slipped your mind when evaluating their last two seasons.

Cutlers wins/loss since 06: 7-12- 36%
Rivers win/loss since 06: 25-7- .78%

"These" numbers tell the tale as cutlers inability to win puts him below rivers. Your next argument will consist of "Well the chargers are good rivers not" blah blah. But hey, his numbers are just as good as Cutlers. So if you would continue bashing your own QB in the process be my guest.

Well, the Chargers are great but not Rivers. How do you like that? But it's true. Wins for a quarter back aren't as impressive as stats are, which you do need to prove a good QB. For example. A quarterback that has 4500 yards and 40 TD's on a 5-11 team is a better QB than Rivers, no? All you have to hang on is the fact that Rivers has more wins than Cutler, which doesn't at all mean that Rivers is a better QB, but that the Chargers are by far a better team. If I were to put John Elway on the Dolphins and Akilii Smith on the Patriots, with the same records that they have now, are you trying to tell me that Smith is better than Elway. Cause this is the bull **** you're implying.

Whoah, Whoah, Whoah.....slow down. I must have either misinterpreted what you had written or you just put Cutler in the same league as Elway. That has to be the biggest joke i've ever read in my life. Not only that but you also practically stated that the difference of skill between Elway and Akilii smith. Are you nuts? Your perception of rivers and of the football as a sport are clearly biased. How would you compare a player (akili smith) with a career rating of 52.8. To Rivers whos 87.4 as a starter. For someone whos been on this site as long as you have. Your sure flirting with the line that is reality and belief. Your hatred for rivers and the chargers is causing you to speak out of your ****. If you think i'm wrong than look at your own words.

^ I was not implying anything. But more that you were implying that cutler is elway in this scenario. Better luck next time Donko fan

Yeah fo sho, Philip Rivers better sleep with one eye open. Jay cutler had better stats and is just better

December 31, 2007  01:43 PM ET

Lynch go to the numbers, they don't lie. Cutler is the real deal, and Rivers is just living it up, take the snap hand it to LT and talk some trash.

December 31, 2007  01:48 PM ET

Who does Rivers play for? Never heard of him. Cutler on the other hand is an impressive QB. A QB that makes the team around him better always gets my vote. Not a QB who makes his team worse like that Rivers guy lol

December 31, 2007  01:49 PM ET

Until Cutler wins against the Chargers, he's not going to be seen as the better QB when compared directly. If you want to compare them based on specifics such as accuracy, arm strength (vastly overrated but vaild), yards per completion, etc.. do so in your next argument.

I'll wait until then to decide.

Guru: You're kidding, right? I sure hope so.. Phillip Rivers plays for SD. As far as making the team better/worse, that really depends on the talent around you since this is a team game. Mind you, San Diego is going into the playoffs whereas Denver is not, so I can't say that he makes them worse.

December 31, 2007  01:59 PM ET

I disagree skybill, I think Cutler is already seen as a better QB, outside of San Diego of course. RIvers has Gates, LT and Chambers to throw it too and still doesnt have the numbers Cutler has. Cutler has a spotty run game this year and MADE Marshall a possible probowl reciever. Thats something Rivers could not do with Vincent Jackson, whom some predicted would be his "breakout" season.

December 31, 2007  02:01 PM ET

I see your point in that SD has better pieces in general and that Cutler has helped one of his players develop.

I remember the Cutler comparo originally being with Leinart, but it's hard to make that work when he's out for the season. I can't say I'm a fan of Matt, but he's got no choice to pull it together here in AZ. I don't see Warner lasting much beyond next season at best.

December 31, 2007  02:06 PM ET

Yes Skybill, im kidding about not knowing Rivers lol. Chargers are going to the playoffs because of the play from their defense and star players. I dont consider Rivers part of that group. Denvers defense was the reason for their downfall this year.

December 31, 2007  02:09 PM ET

Leinart is a huge disappointment. Warner proved that a decent/good QB and post great numbers in AZ. If Matt doesnt post similiar numbers next year, he shouldnt be a qb in the nfl. The weapons he has their is every qb;s dream

December 31, 2007  02:27 PM ET

lynch NICE N3W PIC

December 31, 2007  02:28 PM ET

rivers will be the reason why the chargers lose in the playoffs...him and norv just watch

December 31, 2007  02:36 PM ET

DEN needs to tightened up for sure. Once that happens, they'll be in significantly better shape.

As far as Leinart, I don't think he should start right away. He's shown flashes of stellar play but his questionable plays outnumber those great ones. Warner is and should be the starter, and Leinart needs to learn from him while he has the chance.

December 31, 2007  02:36 PM ET

really? I think Rivers is much better

December 31, 2007  02:37 PM ET

oops.. that should say:

DEN defense needs to be tightened up for sure...

December 31, 2007  02:42 PM ET

denver got a little crazy paying the corners, keeping grandpa lynch, and not adding a stuffing style lb, their defensive line may be ok with another yr on them

the bright side is that cutler, and his 2 favorite tartets sheffler and marshall are all 2nd yr players, i like the future for this offense

December 31, 2007  03:28 PM ET

Cutler posting better numbers with less talent then a guy with tons of weapons....That shows me Cutler is better. He took an unknown 4th round draft choice, Brandon Marshall, and elevated him to Probowl numbers.

December 31, 2007  04:23 PM ET

Haha I laughed so hard when Rivers went to go sit down beside LT and LT walked away.. serves him right. He's garbage.

December 31, 2007  04:41 PM ET

He's garbage.
