Okay, we agree on # 1. But, I think Detroit, which always is soft on the defensive side of the ball, would need a stud LB like Willis more than they needed another WR. They could have grabbed a good WR later in the draft but not a LB w/ as much upside and potential as Willis definitely has. Willis has done much more this year than Johnson has, and Johnson is in a bigtime passing offense under Martz.
Cleveland has had problems at tackle (particularly LT) for years now. Thomas started every game and was exceptional. His pairing w/ Steinbach on that side of the line is awesome. Also, Cleveland has youth at LB which is green and needs a little more experience but has alot of potential. Your pick of TB taking Lynch is interesting because at draft time they had no clue that their "Cadillac" was going to break down. If it was AFTER Cadillacs injury then i could see what you mean more but look at how well Earnest Graham has done filling in for him. While Arizona could haved used Thomas definitely, Edgerrin James is getting up in age & they have no one behind him w/ any bright outlook or real potential as an every down back. They need to start grooming someone asap & Lynch would have fit.

well, i think Calvin Johnson has a chance to be one of the greatest ever WR, a franchise player, something any team would want and Detroit doesnt have. A linebacker can't have the same impact as a marquee wide reciever. I dont think Willis can be a urlacher or ray lewis kind anyway, but comparing TO or Moss to ray lewis as far as single handed impact goes has to be favoring a WR.
I also think a linebacker can have alot more impact on a team then a tackle, thats why i picked willis over thomas. i dont think thomas is gonna be another jonathon ogden, but willis looks like a perennial pro bowl linebacker, I'd compare him to a DJ Williams in effectiveness, eventhough Williams is a natural OLB. Thomas will become a good tackle, but finding a LB like Willis is much more important to a team than solid tackle in my eye.
TB have a strong selection of WR, of course, if they should pick calvin, i think they should with there aging WR, but he gone. lynch would have been a solid pick because eventhough earnest graham and cadillac williams are available, Lynch is capable of being a superb RB, the others may only reach a couple probowls in my eyes. James is a great RB a needs help, i.e. thomas

A LB can't have the same impact as a marquee WR huh ? Well defense wins championships and have you ever heard of guys like Ray Lewis, Mike Singletary, Jack Lambert, Dick Butkus, etc. They all had as much an impact or more as marquee WR's did. I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss Willis about being another Urlacher or Lewis. Did you see how high he was in tackles this year ? Insane for a rookie on a soft defense like the niners D was for the most part. I also can't see how you think a LB can have more impact than a franchise tackle. Look at the impact that guys like Orlando Pace and Jon Ogden have had. LB's are very important but easier to find talent at than at a franchise tackle spot, trust me. Look at how many marquee LB's come out in the draft every year compared to tackles.

Defense wins championships, but a defense isn't one player. Randy moss can turn a game in an instant much easier than a single linebacker. a Defense working together is what makes them so great, they need to have great chemistry, like the Pats or Ravens defense, combined with stars. But a WR can do it on his own.
A franchise tackle is one piece of a 5 man offnesive line. if the rest of the line isn't any good, what kind of impact can a tackle have? a great linebacker on the other hand can make up for the problems in the rest of his linebacking core, as there is only 3 to 4 LB's in a defense at one time and they control a much wider space than a tackle, they can control much more on th field.

Here is mine:

1. Adrian Peterson
2. Joe Thomas
3. Patrick Willis
4. Calvin Johnson
5.Marshawn Lynch

If Detroit had the chance to get Thomas, they wouldn't second guess themselves.

I am still on the fence....

i give my vote to ED Reed, because Willis is a monster and i do not think Johnson was what we expected not to say he will not be a stud. by the way Reed, i'll take Ad Wilson over you, but its close, Reed is so good. but wilson is stuck in zona

Tampa Bay has 3 running backs, and Earnest Graham is one of the best this year in the NFC...

Joe Thomas was one of the best O lineman in football this year giving up ONE sack. If he wouldnt go first, its a crime. Peterson is good, but he benefits HUGELY from that O line. Just ask Mewelde Moore or Chester Taylor. They look like Barry Sanders behind that O line. Peterson is also widely inconsistent and if you subtract his 3 best games this year he would be a VERY below average RB. Plus he is very injury prone.

January 1, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Oakland doesn't need a running back, they have Justin Fargas. I would say that they would need a QB, because Jamarcus Russell is not the answer. WHAT THE HECK WERE THEY THINKING?

January 1, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Yeah, Joe Thomas would be a good fit in Oakland but Adrian Peterson is just too good to pass by.

January 1, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Maybe Trent Edwards or Brady Quinn for Oakland if there was a do-over draft maybe?

January 1, 2008  06:35 PM ET

what the hell, 13-3 and i havent even made a real argument, damn

January 1, 2008  06:52 PM ET

oh yeah, i think there is a strong quality difference between peterson and fargas as well as lynch compared to williams and graham

January 1, 2008  07:28 PM ET

and in an incredibly important position

January 2, 2008  01:57 PM ET

You could give the Lions 10 do-overs and they would still take a receiver

January 2, 2008  02:03 PM ET

you can never take a LB second overall. never. vote goes to whoever didn't.

January 2, 2008  02:06 PM ET

"you can never take a LB second overall. never."

And why would this be again ? you wouldn't take mike singletary, ray lewis, lawrence taylor or jack lambert # 2 overall ? Butkus maybe ? Nietzschke ? please explain.

Good TD. Tough decision so far..

January 2, 2008  03:14 PM ET

Find myself voting for Ed Reed alot lately. The guy knows his football. I'd have to take that LB Patrick Willis first, a RB with your first pick is asking for trouble. Horses are easy to find. That smart LB who can become a leader of that "D" for years to come would be more important to me. Than again I been watching guys torch Jason David like a boy among men all season so I'm looking at defensive guys.

January 2, 2008  03:15 PM ET

OAK: Patrick Willis: already a decent pass defense, but the run defense is atrocious, get somebody who can hit hard.

DET: Joe Thomas: a lot of sacks are given up by Detroit, get a solid lineman who helps in protection, and running the ball.

CLE: Calvin Johnson: Braylon Edwards is starting to look great, get another young guy to help out in the future.

TB: Adrian Peterson: You already have Cadillac, but he gets hurt, and so does Peterson, so you could run a two back system that would help the passing game, and would also keep both RB's fresh.

ARI: Levi Brown: They need OL help more than anything else on the offense.

January 2, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Saintsfan, thank gosh someone remembers the importance of LB's, then again you have to, cause it's what you guys need.

Close call, I would say that Oakland wouldn't need a RB, but my kicker here is that TB kind of does.
