Jason Elam's GW kick in the first game of the season was a better play than Phil Dawson's kick that got a double bounce.

If you don't remember Jason Elam's game winning kick against Buffalo, here's how it went down. The Broncos were trailing the whole game and were in the fourth quarter with about 30 seconds or so when Jay Cutler threw a first down to Brandon Marshall. The clock kept running and the Broncos had no timeouts. The clock was ticking down with 11 seconds to go and the special teams unit had to sprint for their lives to at least get the kick off to win it. Only eleven seconds. Never before has a special teams unit got out that fast, , get the kick off, AND make it, which won the game. That made Denver have the lead for one second, the last one. This was a better play than Phil Dawson's double bouncer and back onto the field kick, to tie Baldymore and go into OT. We've all seen A FG hit the side bar, but never have we seen it hit it, then bounce off the "Dawson Bar" and back onto the field. That's incredible and all, but, earlier football players haven't had a chance to do that because there used to be 2 side bars that went all the way down to the ground, and a middle bar wit no back bar. Not to say this might have happened, but there would've been more of a chance to do it.

No way......I have the up-most respect for Elam, but I hope he burns for that one.

As far as I can remember, there has never been a kick that did what Dawson's did. The thing that make's it special is the ravens thought they won. Fans were on the field, players were headed towards the locker room, and then they were called back. The Refs had never seen anything like that either. Thats evident because NIETHER REF made a call wether it was good, or not. That sent them to overtime where Cleveland got the win.....Whats important about that win is that moved Cleveland into prime postion for the post season....Even though they didnt make it, with out that win they would lost serious MOMENTUM.....Plus it was a divisional game which always out wieghs a non-divison game. That game had playoff implications...Where as Denver didnt even break .500

Haha. You're just jealous. JK. And I did mention that no one has ever done what Dawson did. And that wasn't the kick that made them win, it made the go into OT. If that bar wasn't there, their would be no dispute if he made the field goal or not. Let's not forget, that the refs this year have been a little, stupid. After looking at the replay, they were looking right at the ball and they still had to talk about it. That could be stupidity or just remarkableness. And again I'd like to bring up that that kick was a game tying FG. Even Dawson himself would say that his GW kick was better than the double bouncer that just took a nifty little bounce, that would've been good back in the days of the two bars and the one n the middle with none in the back. But Denver was playing for something important in that first game. They played the game in the memory of Darrent Williams and Damien Nash. And I think Shanahan said it best when he said that he didn't know which of the two helped in the first an second games, cause if yo remember, Elam had another GW kick in Denver's game 2 also, against the Raiders.

"Remarkableness".......WTF is this??? Are you making stuff up lynch??? JK

Its as simple as this...

Non-divisional game VS divisional game
FG that was clearly good VS FG that boucned around
Game that did not go into OT vs Game that did go into OT
Game with no playoff implacations VS Game with playoff implications

I think the Refs made the right move by not making a call. No matter how long they were in the NFL, they never had to make a call like that before, so im glad they took thier time and made the right one. True, if they were playing back in the day, it would have been good NO QUESTION. Too bad they were not playing back in the day

Elam's FG was greater because it wasn't a matter of OT. It was a do or die situation, and he decided to do instead of die. And the non-divisional game they were playing for went passed football because they were playing for Darrent and Damien. And the FG that was clearly good, almost didn't happen considering they only had 11 seconds to do, 11 players with eleven second. Let's keep in mind that these weren't wide receivers, corners, and halfbacks getting out here. It was 9 linemen, a kicker, and a holder, who was the punter. Not speed demons in my mind, sorry, but they're not. And if the Browns didn't win that game they'd still have a good chance to make the playoffs considering the Titans were blowing at the time. And if it weren't for Jason Elam, Damien Nash, and Darrent Williams, the Broncos would have a top 10, maybe top 5 pick right now.

"And if it weren't for Jason Elam, Damien Nash, and Darrent Williams, the Broncos would have a top 10, maybe top 5 pick right now. "

The same can be said for Ryan Lindell too. If not for him, the Bills would have a top 3 pick this season...But thats not the TD. Nor is the fact that Elam has hit GW FG's his whole career...It comes down to your TD Title which states Elams kick was better. As HEARTBREAKING as it was for me to witness on opening day...Its not as good a Dawsons.

If the Browns had lost that game, thier playoff hopes would have grown dim. They were tied with Pitt late in the season for 1st place in the AFC North.....

I dont know if you know, but this is how playoff tie-breakers work. If two wildcard teams are tied with the same record, the first tie breaker goes to thier record in their DIVISION. Thats why the Titans made it with a win over Indy....A DIVISION OPPONENT. It gave them a 1 game edge in thier divisonal record over Cleveland because they lost Cincy late in the season. If they had beat Cinncy, VY would be watching the Playoffs from the couch with Cutler

coming out and rushing a kick is more impressive than a random bounce of a support post. Dawson's kick was good no doubt...but a meaningless bounce doesn't make it a special kick. Having to get on the field and make any kick in 11 seconds is more impressive. How long was Elam's kick?

42 yards. not easy with 1 second left with the clock still ticking

ok, yeah wasn't a 20 yd chip shot......i don't even see how it's close....strange bounce or rushed 42 yarder? ask any kicker and i think they'll tell you the rushed kick is more difficult.

yea, I mean, It's not like Dawson ment to do that, he never even called a bank

but really, I can't empisize enough that it was just a crazy bo8nce, that Dawson didn't wanna be part of. He even said, well, I don't wanna be named after bars, that's for sure. That play was filled with skill and luck. The skill part was Dawson actually making the field goal, the bounces were %100 percent luck. Elam's play was filled with luck too, but not as much as Dawson's. The luck part was there not being 10 seconds on the clock instead of 11.

Lynch.....

Im sure Ol Mikey boy had his ENTIRE FG unit ready to storm the feild at the end of the play. Its not like they were all spread around, looking for Helmets and chin straps.....Wondering where the Water Boy is with thier Latte.....

But still, how often do you see a FG unit made up of almost all linemen sprint like their **** is on fire? Dawson's kick was made up of bounce, An inch to the left, the bounce doesn't happen, an inch to the right, the bounce doesn't happen. For Elam's kick, an in to the left, he still makes it, an inch to the right, he still makes it. We all know football is a game of inches. That's why Elam's kick is better. It's skill(Elam) over luck(Dawson), in this case.

do playoff implications really make on play better than another? having time to take the field, check the turf, mark your spot, step back, and take a breath makes it so much easier than having to rush out and make a kick in 11 seconds. that takes way more skill, on the snapper and holder too, than a freak bounce. If the ref's had called dawson's fg good right away it would be a big deal. it's more of a blooper than a highlight. crazy and cool yes, more skillful, no.

Elam did his kick as an end game part of a Chinese fire drill that was the Donkeys running onto the field at the last second. Dawson's kick was lucky to have even cleared the crossbar.
