NASCAR feeling ripple effects of cheating scandal

10:27 AM ET 10.20 | The cheating scandal at Richmond International Raceway that rocked Nascar more than a month ago continues to be felt in a sport whose credibility has been questioned by fans, the news media and even its drivers. As the 13-car field for the Sprint Cup playoff enters the second half of the Chase with Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway, the fallout widens. Last week, Michael Waltrip Racing announced it was eliminating 15 percent of its staff, including the No. 56 race team and Martin Truex Jr., a driver at the center of the scandal, who has paid the highest price even though it appears he did nothing wrong. That development is among the repercussions from Richmond, the race that set the field for the playoff but was manipulated by drivers at Michael Waltrip Racing to try to help Truex qualify for the Chase at the expense of others. "We aren't finished seeing the ripple effects of what went on at Richmond," said Kyle Petty, a longtime driver and broadcaster.

04:54 PM ET 10.13 | Brad Keselowski, the defending Sprint Cup Champion, has finally won a race after a 37 straight losses. The win is more than just a win though; it was a rare occurrence for a driver who wasn't in the season's Chase for the Sprint Cup. Matt Kenseth, who finished third at Charlotte, has managed to bring his lead to four points in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings.

12:24 PM ET 10.09 | On Monday, Tony Stewart underwent surgery for a third time following his scary car crash in early August. The results have been looking promising, as Stewart is expected to fully recover and be able to race next season. His first two surgeries were over two months ago, on Aug. 6, and 8, so as long as there aren't any setbacks, he could be back on the track soon.

10:38 AM ET 09.29 | If Denny Hamlin were to give Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth a performance review for the first 28 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, the verdict would be "Meets Expectations." Though Kenseth's breakout career-best seven-win season may have stunned casual observers, Hamlin wasn't the least bit surprised at his new teammate's success. Hamlin has endured health issues of his own this year. He suffered a compression fracture of his first lumbar vertebra in a wreck at Fontana, Calif., in late March, missed four races subsequently and made an early exit from his car at Talladega. A chronic issue with bulging discs has kept him in pain throughout the season, with little opportunity to heal. Hamlin hopes to use the offseason to recuperate fully and concedes that surgery might be an option.

11:31 AM ET 08.24 | Kurt Busch has been offered an extension from Furniture Row Racing. The contract comes five days after FOXSports.com broke the news that the 2004 champion had received an offer from Stewart-Haas Racing to pilot a fourth car in 2014. Although Busch was offered a deal from FRR earlier this year, he opted to wait and "kick the tires" before making a final decision. Busch, who is currently ninth in the point standings but sans a win, didn't seem concerned about his plans for next season. Right now he said his "main goal is making the Chase." "The timing of making a decision is what it needs to be," Busch said. "There are timelines on things and things that have to fall into place. The timing of this is tough because it's the middle of August and it's the run towards the Chase. But it's a decision I have to put a lot of time and effort into."
