Brian Davis opens RBC Heritage with first round lead

09:45 AM ET 04.19 | England's Brian Davis fired a six-under par opening round at The RBC Heritage on Thursday afternoon. Davis' 65 on the par 71 Harbor Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island was good for a one shot lead over a threesome that includes Tampa Bay Champion winner, Kevin Streelman, Johnson Wagner and Charley Hoffman. This is the only the third time in his career that Davis has had the lead after the first round of a PGA event. His lead would have been two, but Davis called a penalty on himself at the 12th hole when he hit a strand of grass while in the hazard next to the green. Davis called the official over, explained what he had done, and confirmed the mistake. This is the same type of penalty Carl Pettersson incurred at the PGA Championship last August while playing the first hole in the final round at Kiahwah Island. The PGA received over 200 emails from viewers who saw the infraction.

Tiger Woods named Avis Player of the Month

08:02 PM ET 04.17 | Who else could they have picked? After winning two of the four tournaments on The Florida swing in March, Tiger Woods wins the Player of the Month provided by Avis for March. Woods captured over 61 percent of the vote that is tallied up on PGATour.com, with Kevin Streelman, D.A. Points, and Michael Thompson in the voting. Tiger Woods won the March POY by virtue of wins coming in WGC competition at The Cadillac Championship in Doral, and his eighth career win at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Although Tiger didn't pick up another Green Jacket in Augusta last week, with three wins on the season, I don't look for this to be his only Avis award in the 2013 season. There is a lot of great golf left before we wrap it up at the Tour Championship in October. Kevin Streelman came in second with over 31 percent of the vote.

03:54 PM ET 04.16 | Graeme McDowell will be licking his wounds after missing his second cut of the year at The Masters last week as he leads a nice field of PGA Tour regulars into South Carolina for The RBC Masters. It's going to be hard to put the drama and excitement of Adam Scott's first major victory behind us, but it's time to move on. The RBC Heritage gets underway Thursday morning at the 7,101-yard Harbor Town Golf Links Course on Hilton Head Island. The course was designed by Pete Dye in consultation with Jack Nicklaus, and plays to a par of 71. This is Jack's first attempt at course design and is a fine old Scottish layout that is a favorite for many of the tour pros. Harbor Town is built on the site of the oldest golf club in South Carolina, and possibly the United States. It was formed in 1786 by Scottish merchants.

Adam Scott's win at Augusta will rekindle putter debate

06:24 PM ET 04.16 | Well, it's finally been done. With his victory at The Masters on Sunday evening, Adam Scott makes it all four majors that have been won with a belly putter. The champagne stains haven't dried on his new Green Jacket, and the people are already accusing him of cheating. Now he will hear the cat-calls, and boos during practice rounds as he makes his way around the country during the next few months as has Keegan Bradley, and Webb Simpson. The great thing about golf, and why bifurcation would stink, is from its inception in the pastures of Scotland, golf has always found a way to equalize every player. If I am good enough, I can enter the qualifiers, and play in the U.S. Open. No other sport offers the same opportunities. Bifurcation would destroy that aspect of the game.

05:10 PM ET 04.13 | Dustin Johnson had the lead briefly at -7 under par during the second round of the 2013 Masters on Friday, but once again found a way to lose six strokes in the last five holes. Oh, by the way, he did make one par at the par 3 16th hole. Dustin made a mess at the par five 15th, (the same hole Tiger Woods took a snowman), and figured a way to double bogey the par four 18th. He made normal bogeys at 14, and 17, and on a day where he had it all going, it all went away. Johnson also had a couple of bogeys early during the rain, at the first and third holes. His day ended with a four over par 76 for his second round, and a tie at 19th place at -1 under for a total. Dustin Johnson blew a final round lead at the 2010 U.S. Open that was eventually won by Graeme McDowell. He also made an error a couple of months later when he lost to Martin Kaymer at Whistling Straights at the 2010 PGA Championship. He grounded his club in what turned out to be one of hundreds of sand hazards on the golf course. He was assessed a penalty, and eventually ended tied at the end of regulation play. He lost in the playoff to Kaymer.
