Bubba Watson shares the gift of giving

08:31 PM ET 08.03 | PGA golfer (and hovercart aficionado) Bubba Watson bought Chipotle meals for more than $60 people the other night. The total coast of the burrito binge? A mere $497.76! (He also tipped over $100, because Bubba Watson is a kinder and richer man than you.) Of course, it's a little difficult to think about Chipotle's food without thinking about South Park skewering the tendency of the burritos to induce horrible bowel problems in its loyal customers. However, I think that criticism is an unfair and unfounded urban legend.

Rory McIroy responds to Gary Player's marital advice

09:29 AM ET 08.03 | This level of restraint and the degree of emotional control you'll read about here is so severe it is appropriate, of course it belongs to a golfer. To back up a bit: Golf great Gary Player backhandedly insulted Rory McIlroy's girlfriend last week, all under the guise of "friendly advice." Here's what the 77-year-old Player said about the supposedly struggling McIlroy: "When you're in love as a young man naturally golf seems to take second place for a while. It's natural. Love is still the greatest thing that ever happens in our lives. But the thing is for a man like Rory with talent galore he's got to make sure he has a woman like I've got, who has been married (to me) for 56 years, that has only encouraged me to do well and made sacrifices. He's got to be intelligent and find the right wife. If he finds the right wife, if he practices and if he's dedicated, he could be the man." McIlroy is dating tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy was given those comments and was asked to respond. Golf Channel has the whole thing, should you be inclined, but there's the meat: "I have the utmost respect for Gary Player," McIlroy said. "He is an incredible man. Obviously the success he's had on the golf course, but just the way he's lived his life and how healthy he is. Obviously he's an inspiration for everyone. I don't know what he said. This is the first time I've heard it. I don't really know, all I know is I've got a lot of respect for the man, and he's someone that I definitely look up to."

Inbee Park hoping to generate buzz for LPGA

10:43 AM ET 07.30 | Unfortunately, the LPGA is just starting to make a little noise in the U.S. this year, but lacks the popular American star that could drive it to the levels it needs to be. Inbee Park is a wonderful golfer, but casual golf fans are wrapped up in the start of football season and the preparations for the PGA Championship next week. With a win at St. Andrews for the Ricoh Women's British Open, Park would become the first golfer this year to win four majors.

Hideki Matsuyama penalized for slow play at British Open

06:23 PM ET 07.20 | If the course conditions at the British Open at Muirfield don't get you, the officials will; Hideki Matsuyama was only thee shots behind the leaders on Saturday when he was assessed a penalty for slow play on the 17th hole, evidently taking too long to hit his shot out of the rough. Matsuyama went from a par to a bogey on the hole, a crushing blow considering how difficult is has been for golfers to record good scores on the treacherous course. The Royal & Ancient golf society said Matsuyama and partner Johnson Wagner were 15 minutes behind schedule. Wagner defended Matsuyama after their round.

British Open attendance down

10:11 AM ET 07.20 | In case you were wondering if the fans were coming dressed as empty green grandstand seats, the answer is now. Prices may be harming Open attendance at Muirfield despite great weather and sound infrastructure work by the R&A to get people here with relative ease. Ron Sirak Tweeted the shocking drop from the last Open at Muirfield through two rounds. Attendance at Muirfield down from 2002 in @The_Open with 23,393 Thursday compared to 30,620 in '02 and 29,144 Friday vs. 34,479. The Daily Mail's Mike Dickson wrote in the Tee Room notes today that "Charging 75 pounds for a ticket is looking very steep in this economic climate."
