11:36 AM ET 05.21 | The Washington Nationals bullpen has gotten even weaker after relief pitcher Ryan Mattheus suffered an injury in the locker room following his brutal performance during the team's 13-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday night. After the game, Mattheus took his frustration out in the locker room by punching a locker. Unfortunately, that just added to his frustrations by causing Mattheus to suffer a broken throwing hand. There is no immediate timetable for his return, but he is expected to "be out awhile" following his trip to the hand specialist.

07:15 AM ET 05.21 | It appears that Jayson Werth, who has not played in a major league game since May 2, won't be returning very soon, either. After getting what Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson called "kind of an alarming report" on [Werth] following another MRI on his strained right hamstring, it appears the right fielder's return will be delayed even further than the start of the team's upcoming homestand. "Our doctors say that he's going to be a while longer," Johnson said Monday afternoon at AT&T Park. "I think he was rushing it. And hearing from Jayson, he felt like it was a slight strain he could play through. He's starting to realize that your hamstring is going to take a little more time."

07:14 AM ET 05.21 | In the course of a week, the best starting staff in baseball has become something of an uncertainty. [The] temptation for most amateur general managers in Cardinal Nation is to accelerate the future and rush last year's first-round draft pick Michael Wacha up from Class AAA Memphis. Well lead us not into temptation. At least not yet. ... [After positive reviews from Memphis], the 21-year-old righthander is the obvious move of every fantasy-league loving fan who doesn't have to consider anything beyond the right here and the right now. Luckily, the real GM in this game, John Mozeliak, doesn't run the Cards like that. He's willing to show a little more patience with Wacha. At least for now.

07:14 AM ET 05.21 | There was a time when any Albert Pujols at-bat was a slice of must-see TV. The thing that's strange -- the thing that's sad -- is how little excitement there is now when he comes to the plate. ... Each of the last two seasons, he hit well enough the last four-plus months of the season to end up with strong numbers. Last year, for instance, after May 14 he hit .312/.374/.589 with 42 doubles and 29 homers. You have to believe that he will start hitting again at some point. But, even assuming he does again find the range, even assuming he has a few more productive years, the truth is that Pujols has entered a different phase of his career. After years of being the best player in baseball, Pujols is now sort of beside the point.

07:13 AM ET 05.21 | Ian Stewart picked up a rare Iowa Cubs start at third base recently with Josh Vitters having reinjured his left quad the day before, but Principal Park was a long way from where he'd like to be. Stewart's wrist is healthy, and he's very thankful the Cubs helped him get the surgery. But he knows he has dropped on the organization's depth chart. Last week in Washington, general manager Jed Hoyer was asked if Stewart still had a future with the Cubs. "I hope there's a future here, but at this point, it's going to be about performance," Hoyer said. ... Is he prepared to spend the entire season in the Minors? "I need to play to get everything figured out, and if I end up staying here the whole year, then it is what it is.
