The biggest flaw in Harper's game

07:12 AM ET 05.15 | Young Bryce Harper wanted to know how bad it was. He kept asking Denard Span, the first person who reached Harper on Monday night after he ran chin-first into right field wall at Dodger Stadium. ... Harper listed off what hurt the day after: "Both legs. Shoulder. Ribs. Hand. Wrist. Chin, of course." ... Harper can do just about anything he wants on a baseball diamond, but at 20 and still learning the outfield, he lacks the instinct to protect himself. Harper's utter abandon helps make him the player he is, helps separate him from so many others. It also may endanger his long-term prospects and threaten the Hall of Fame career earmarked for him since his youth.

07:10 AM ET 05.15 | When the Giants arrived in Toronto, they did so bearing gifts for Melky Cabrera. Ryan Vogelsong was the first Giant to walk over and embrace [Cabrera] in between his rounds of batting practice. Gregor Blanco soon followed. Members of the coaching staff shook his hand and smiled. ... Bygones can be bygones when everyone owns a World Series ring, it seems. And now Cabrera owns one, too. Giants manager Bruce Bochy presented the four-month sensation turned disgraced outfielder with the signature baby blue Tiffany bag. The exchange was made where lenses and note pads couldn't go, in a tunnel between the two clubhouses -- a private affair, which is what Cabrera wanted.

07:09 AM ET 05.15 | From St. Louis, the Mets are handling top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler with care. [Wheeler] is heading back to New York to be examined by team doctors after he complained of soreness in his right collarbone. "I think we're being a little bit conservative given who it is and making sure our guys see him right away," assistant general manager John Ricco said. Wheeler, 22, likely will miss his next scheduled outing. The righthander first mentioned the soreness on Monday, two days after his previous outing for Triple-A Las Vegas. Wheeler showed no sign of an injury as his velocity registered in his typical range. Nevertheless, Ricco said the Mets opted to take a cautious approach.

12:15 PM ET 05.14 | Washington Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper was involved in a scary incident on Monday night after chasing down a fly ball from Los Angeles Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis. Harper ran face first in to the wall and crumbled to the ground. The particular part of the wall that Harper hit had no padding and it resulted in a cut on his chin. After a few minutes on the ground, Harper was able to make his way off the field under his own power and he was examined for a concussion. Harper's agent, Scott Boras, said that Harper did not suffer a concussion. Instead, he just needed to have stitches to treat the cut on his chin.

07:12 AM ET 05.14 | With Anthony Rizzo's contract set, many look at Jeff Samardzija as the next very expensive domino to fall for the Cubs. Samardzija's agent Mark Rogers told ESPNChicago.com there is nothing to report on a potential Samardzija deal at this point. It appears after the 2013 season both sides will re-evaluate their positions and see if a long-term deal makes sense for everyone involved. "It is not really important to me to tell the truth," Samardzija said. "I am the type of guy that his play speaks for itself. Most importantly you do the things you are supposed to do to win ballgames." ESPNChicago.com reported last November that the two sides had preliminary discussions about a three-year deal in the fall of 2012.
