07:19 AM ET 05.21 | The legend of Johnny Manziel continues to grow. SMU coach June Jones, whose team lost to Manziel and the Aggies 48-3, recently said "Johnny Football" is the greatest college football player he has ever seen. That's what Manziel wants the consensus to be when he is done. An encore, with a national championship, arguably would push Manziel past Vince Young, Sammy Baugh, Jim Thorpe, Tim Tebow, Herschel Walker, Red Grange, Archie Griffin, Dick Butkus, Earl Campbell and whomever else is in the debate. "My goals are lofty," Manziel told the Star-Telegram. "I know what I want to achieve. My biggest goal is I want to do something at A&M that will never, ever be done again. Never."

07:18 AM ET 05.21 | What a difference a few weeks make in the case of defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes. Less than a month before he was to start his Notre Dame football career with summer school and informal workouts, [Vanderdoes] and his future morphed into a runaway rumor Monday. And seemingly the only two people not talking about it in the college football cyber-world were the two who could bring actual substance to the discussion -- Irish fourth-year head coach Brian Kelly and Vanderdoes himself. ... Should Vanderdoes defect -- and UCLA is the reported targeted alternative -- it would take away what figures to be a cornerstone on the defensive line in 2014.

07:17 AM ET 05.21 | On the surface, without games to play or practices to coach, this is the slow season in college football, but not for coaches at top programs. Butch Jones says his job is nonstop. ... Yet even amid his travels to various speaking arrangements, fan and alumni events and booster receptions, and his long hours in the offices in Knoxville, Jones takes time to review the work he's done running the Volunteers' program. "I evaluate myself hour by hour, minute by minute," the coach said before Thursday night's Big Orange Caravan stop at the Chattanooga Convention Center. "Every night when I kind of slow down a little bit, I always replay the day over in my mind. What would you have done differently?"
