04:16 PM ET 05.24 | Former defensive tech defensive tackle Delvon Simmons, who was a five-star prospect out of high school, visited Southern Cal last week and will be in Miami this weekend. Originally a North Carolina signee, former Red Raiders head coach Tommy Tuberville convinced Simmons to move to Lubbock as part of the Class of 2011. Tuberville, a defensive-minded coach, left Texas Tech for Cincinnati in December, and with Kliff Kingsbury, who is thoroughly focused on offense, running the show, Simmons decided to move on from Tech. He has two years of eligibility remaining and will have to sit out the 2013 season if he transfers to another FBS program.

04:14 PM ET 05.24 | West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck said that the school would like to add a few marquee non-conference contests to future football schedules. Included in the list of desired opponents are Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Each of those schools has a history with the Mountaineers. West Virginia and Pittsburgh played 104 times between 1895 and 2011 in the Backyard Brawl, one of the best rivalries in college football. But like so many other great things, the dreaded scourge of conference realignment killed it when the 'Eers moved from the Big East to the Big 12. West Virginia and Virginia Tech met 51 times between 1912 and 2005, including every year since 1973. Penn State played West Virginia in each season from 1947 to 1992 and a total of 59 times. While Virginia doesn't have as much familiarity with the Mountaineers, the schools have played 23 times.

02:53 PM ET 05.24 | Alabama received a commitment Friday on the same day it extended the offer. O.J. Smith, of Bossier City (La.) Airline High School, tweeted that he had committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide Friday. Smith is currently unrated by most of the major services, which shows just how early we are in the recruiting process. He stands 6'2 and depending on the listing, weighs about 320 pounds. He's a very wide and stout prospect, and profiles as someone who would fit as a nose guard for Alabama. Smith also held offers from a few other major schools.

02:50 PM ET 05.24 | Florida added another prospect to its 2014 recruiting class on Thursday night with the commitment of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Northridge High tight end Cyontai Lewis. Lewis is listed by 247Sports at 6'5" and 208 pounds, by Rivals at 6'5" and 212 pounds, by ESPN at a suspicious 6'4" and 230, by Abolverdi at 6'6" and 211 pounds, by his own Hudl page at 6'5" and 196 pounds. If Lewis is going to be a tight end at the collegiate level, he's a receiving tight end first and foremost, and will need to add considerable weight before ever taking the field for Florida, which has four scholarship tight ends on the roster, none listed at less than Kent Taylor's 224 pounds.

02:43 PM ET 05.24 | Lydia Murphy-Stephans, the newly-minted president of Pac-12 Networks, told reporters Wednesday that it is the obligation of Pac-12 sports fans to leave DirecTV if the satellite provider continues to refuse to cave to the network's demands. "We're on schedule, and right on plan, in terms of distribution for the Pac-12 Networks," she said. "I feel good about that. There's an obligation as fans, that if they want Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV is not carrying the Pac-12 Networks, the fan has to be willing to drop DirecTV and pick up a carrier that is." Murphy-Stephans' comments come on the heels of recent remarks by Pac-12 President Larry Scott, who also instructed fans to drop their DirecTV packages in favor of providers who carry the conference's new channel. DirecTV has not placed the fledgling Pac-12 Network on its system yet, claiming that the conference's price and placement demands are too great. The satellite company is one of four major providers -- Verizon, AT&T, and Charter -- who all have refused the network's demands.
