Auburn and Arkansas are still preparing for their annual spring scrimmages in front of fans, but that isn't stopping the Razorbacks from looking ahead to their season opener against the Tigers. Arkansas plans to use this week of spring practices to prepare for the Tigers' hurry-up, no-huddle offense. ... "It'll be a little bit different," [Bret Bielema] told reporters in Fayetteville. "After three weeks you need a little bit of pace, so we'll really go hard into Auburn and Texas Tech prep and work on some of those early non-conference opponents." The Razorbacks and Tigers open the 2014 season Aug. 30 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game is something of a brooding rivalry for the schools.

It happened almost every offseason with Tubby Smith, so Gophers fans should be used to other programs interested in their head coach. Now Richard Pitino's name is getting thrown around for an opening in the Southeastern Conference. USA Today mentioned Pitino among 11 coaches the Tennessee Volunteers "will consider" to replace Cuonzo Martin, who let to become California's new head coach on Tuesday. ... Pitino's pedigree and potential as a top-notch recruiter made Minnesota hire him despite his age (31) and having just one year of head-coaching experience at Florida International. An NIT championship in his first year with the Gophers makes Pitino even more of a hot name in coaching searches. But his buyout is $1.5 million.

07:38 AM ET 04.16 | During in a week in which Mizzou could use good news, Drew Lock delivered. The Lee's Summit High School junior, one of the state's elite recruits and one of the country's most coveted quarterbacks, announced last Wednesday he was verbally committing to Mizzou's 2015 recruiting class. ... On Saturday, the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Lock took another step in becoming Mizzou's most celebrated quarterback recruit since Parkway West's Blaine Gabbert signed with MU in 2008. Lock took part in the Elite 11 Chicago Regional and earned an invitation to this summer's Elite 11 Finals at Nike's premier summer camp event, The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. Another strong outing there and Lock could lock down a spot in the Elite 11 field, the most prestigious quarterback camp in the country.

With Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III declaring for the NBA draft [Tuesday] and fellow sophomore Mitch McGary weighing his options, the Michigan basketball coaching staff is moving forward, especially in the backcourt. After last week's revelation on umhoops.com that U-M was pursuing Wisconsin prep school shooting guard Ryan Taylor, more names are emerging in the mix for the 2014 recruiting class. The Recruit Scoop reported Monday night that shooting guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman of Allentown (Pa.) Central Catholic will take an official visit to U-M this weekend. U-M coach John Beilein has made it a policy in the past not to offer a scholarship until a player takes an official visit. ... U-M's 2014 recruiting class currently stands at four players.

The Auburn Tigers landed a commitment from one of the state's top prospects [Tuesday] in Madison Academy athlete Kerryon Johnson. The Crimson Tide had been recruiting the 6-foot, 200-pounder for quite some time at both running back and defensive back. With his solid commitment to the Tigers, who should be Alabama's top priority be now? ... Jovon Robinson, RB (Georgia Military College, Valdosta, Ga.): After failing to qualify academically at Auburn in 2012, Robinson is now considered the top JUCO running back in the nation. The five-star prospect visited Auburn last week and is set to be in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Tide's A-Day. He racked up 2,387 yards last season.
