WVU's Huggins bumps his head

Posted: Friday May 09, 2008 08:22AM ET

Bob Huggins had a bad trip when he flew to North Carolina. West Virginia University officials said Huggins, the former Kansas State basketball coach who now leads the Mountaineers, was taken to a hospital in Charlotte for precautionary reasons after tripping on an airport tarmac Thursday and hitting his head on the pavement. Athletic director Ed Pastilong said Huggins had a bump on his head and never lost consciousness. Pastilong said Huggins and other athletic department staff flew to Charlotte for a Mountaineer Athletic Club event. After Huggins got off the plane, he was checking his cell phone messages when he tripped over a cone on the tarmac and hit his head.

Posted: Friday May 09, 2008 06:23AM ET

New Indiana coach Tom Crean wasted little time trying to salvage what's left of the Hoosiers' incoming recruiting class, securing the signing of Champaign Central's 6-foot-4-inch Verdell Jones. Jones, who averaged 17.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists, was considered the state's top unsigned prospect.

Filling a void created by the departure of guard Ramar Smith, Junior college All America Bobby Maze has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Tennessee, the school announced Thursday. Maze, a 6-2, 185-pound point guard, played last season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he led the team with 20.7 points, 6.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game as a sophomore. Maze began his career at Oklahoma where he played in 22 games, starting five of them, during the 2006-07 season. He visited Cincinnati last weekend and was set to visit Kentucky but decided UT was a perfect fit, according to the Associated Press.

Weis: 'To hell with Michigan'

Posted: Thursday May 08, 2008 07:28AM ET

A video clip shows Charlie Weis has taken a shot at Michigan in a speech sometime around the Blue and Gold scrimmage last month. Weis made a speech to fans and claimed the Wolverines would make excuses about their new coaching regime under Rich Rodriguez. "I always been one to never make excuses and not go about airing it," Weis said. "We're going to start on September 6 with San Diego State. I think that the first opportunity we're really gonna have to make a statement is that day. "And then we'll listen to Michigan have all their excuses as they come running in and saying how they have a new coaching staff and there's changes. To hell with Michigan!" Notre Dame plays Michigan in its second game, Sept. 13 at South Bend.

Another Hoyas player will transfer

Posted: Thursday May 08, 2008 06:30AM ET

Georgetown guard Jeremiah Rivers has decided to transfer, becoming the second Hoyas reserve to leave the program since the season ended. Rivers's classmate, forward Vernon Macklin, announced his intention to leave in late April and reportedly plans to enroll at Florida. The two departures, coupled with the graduation of four seniors, leave the Hoyas with just four players who played significant minutes for the Big East regular season champion.
