Careless Jets already steaming Ryan

07:02 AM ET 05.23 | So far, so not good for Rex Ryan and Gang Green. Some defensive formations were not in the playbook, and there were plenty of false starts. But the most aggravating were the turnovers, a point of emphasis for the Jets each of the last two seasons. Mark Sanchez tossed three interceptions today. Geno Smith added another. "Today, obviously, I was not happy about how many times we turned the ball over -- four interceptions and a fumble, I believe," Ryan said. ... "You can do 90 percent really good things. But if you do 10 percent poor things you're going to get beat in this league. And those are the things we have to get better at, protecting the football over anything else. Today was a disappointment as far as that's concerned."

Crabtree injury has Niners scrambling

07:01 AM ET 05.23 | The headline, of course, is that key wide receiver Michael Crabtree may miss the 2013 season. This is a massive development for several reasons, of course led by the assumption that the 49ers are more than capable of getting back to the Super Bowl (and winning this time) and that Crabtree -- and his connection to QB Colin Kaepernick -- is a major piece of that assumption. Now: That Anquan Boldin acquisition sure looks better and better and ... are you ready for a big role on a Super Bowl-driven team, A.J. Jenkins? ... They had Kaepernick ready to go behind [Alex Smith], and now they've got a bunch of receivers they can try to put into Crabtree's spot. I doubt it will be as smooth as the Kaepernick move, though.

Why some Eagles are going to 'fall by the wayside'

06:59 AM ET 05.23 | Generally, the NFL has its own brand of roster attrition, but the addition of a new coach can further twist the definition. [Eagles GM Howie Roseman] was asked about whether the changes in scheme would delay the Eagles wanting to extend the contracts for certain starters that are entering the final years of their deals (i.e. wide receiver Jeremy Maclin), and while he didn't directly address Maclin's situation, I did find his answer interesting. Roseman admitted that there will be certain valuable Eagles in seasons past that will "fall by the wayside." He didn't mention any names, but I wouldn't surprised if he was thinking of former defensive ends Trent Cole and Brandon Graham, who are being asked to play outside linebacker.

Nicks' unstated goal in skiping OTAs

06:59 AM ET 05.23 | As if the Giants didn't already have a contract concern in Victor Cruz, they can add fellow wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. [Nicks] sent the team a little message by not showing up for practice Wednesday. Pay day is coming soon for Nicks, too. That was the unstated goal of Nicks' not attending the Giants' organized team activity practice, a team source indicated Wednesday. However, Nicks' agent Peter Schaffer strongly denied that the wide receiver missed the practice because of contractual reasons. Schaffer said only he and Nicks were fully aware of the reason for the player's absence and was unwilling to further discuss. Strictly speaking, Nicks didn't violate any rules. OTAs are, after all, voluntary. However, in the lexicon of NFL, voluntary is a synonym for mandatory.

06:57 AM ET 05.23 | There are some new toys in Miami, rounding out the receiving corps that is Mike Wallace, Brain Hartline, Brandon Gibson and Dustin Keller. OTA days don't directly translate to regular season success. Players that look brilliant in shorts sometimes fade in the padded violence of games. But OTA do speak to alignments and the vision of a coaching staff. They do serve to provide a glimpse of what may be coming in those areas. And that's why the Dolphins four-wide set during Tuesday OTA was intriguing. ... Two speedy receivers who have both had 1,000-yard seasons. A proven big, physical reciever that can work the middle and occasionally get deep. And a seam-threat receiver who has a reputation for uncovering quickly and making himself available to his quarterback. Boom.
