07:37 AM ET 04.14 | With the arrest of linebacker Aldon Smith, the 49ers now have a more difficult decision to make. It's extremely unlikely they'd cut him, because he'd be gobbled up on waivers -- possibly by another team in the division. Because Smith arrived via the first round of the 2011 draft, the 49ers have to decide by May 3 whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Smith's rookie contract. Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the 49ers haven't decided to exercise the option. ... The analysis will entail further homework regarding Smith's off-field issues, especially since the obvious question that arises from Smith's decision (allegedly) to joke about a bomb with a TSA agent is whether Smith was under the influence of alcohol, or something else.

07:36 AM ET 04.14 | Years removed from his own often-elusive playing days, John Elway remains a difficult read. Elway, the Broncos' general manager, began this offseason staring down the middle linebacker position. He even had D'Qwell Jackson in for lunch with quarterback Peyton Manning. But just as it appeared middle linebacker was the Broncos' top offseason priority, Elway looked away. Jackson left for Indianapolis, and the Broncos instead signed Pro Bowlers at three other defensive positions in strong safety T.J. Ward, cornerback Aqib Talib and pass-rushing end DeMarcus Ware. ... [If] they pick the best player at a position of primary need, the Broncos will wind up with a middle linebacker, cornerback and center-guard -- not necessarily in that order -- with their first three picks.

07:35 AM ET 04.14 | Not everyone is enamored with Jadeveon Clowney, and the dial on criticism has been turned up a bit. There's at least one who doesn't like the University of South Carolina pass rusher at all. "He's spoiled, and he's lazy," the NFC personnel man said. "He's never worked hard a day in his life, now all of a sudden you're going to give him a bunch of money and expect him to work hard. I don't see it." Clowney, who despite one man's convictions, is going to be a top five pick in next month's draft. He could be the No. 1 pick, if Houston decides it doesn't like any of the quarterbacks enough. "Oh, he's going to be a high pick," the personnel man said. "Some team will fall in love with him. But wait and see, just wait and see. I just don't think you can count on him. I'm betting the under on him."

07:34 AM ET 04.14 | Having finished at 6-10 this past season, and landing last in the AFC East, the Bills could use quite a bit of talent on the roster -- but could a Griffs hoopster wind up wearing the red, white and blue? It's a long shot, but Chris Manhertz is going to give it a go. Eyewitness Sports has learned the 6'6", 235 lbs forward is scheduled to work out for the Bills. He will most likely be a tight end prospect. Manhertz has never played a down of organized football. The Bronx, NY native just finished his senior season at Canisius College.

07:31 AM ET 04.14 | As per usual, LSU's pro day featured a number of NFL prospects, and there are more than a handful who could be drafted next month -- with receiver Jarvis Landry and quarterback Zach Mettenberger likely leading the way. Odell Beckham did not do any measurable drills, but had an excellent day running routes and catching the ball. He will be the third or fourth receiver drafted. LSU's two interior defensive linemen, Anthony Johnson and Ego Ferguson looked very good working for defensive line coaches. ... Jeremy Hill is a very talented running back. He ran faster than he did at Indy, with times of 4.52 and 4.55 at 234 pounds. If he didn't have a few off field issues, he very well may be the best running back in this draft. The issues though will drop him down some on many boards.
