07:28 AM ET 04.16 | The details of 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith's arrest continue to emerge, and they don't bode well. NFL source: Chris Culliver was with Aldon Smith in the Southwest terminal on Sunday, same flight, but was not involved in any of the trouble. Culliver is not presumed to have been spending time with Smith in LA. It's possible Culliver just happened to be there and was flying back on same flight. But the source did allow that it is a wild convergence that the two 49ers players currently under felony charges were together when Smith was detained in another potentially very serious incident. ... My view, after talking to several sources involved with the 49ers' decision-making, is that troubled linebacker Aldon Smith hasn't only lost the benefit of the doubt, he probably won't play for the 49ers in 2014.

07:27 AM ET 04.16 | Soon, Packers fans, soon -- the ice will ceremonial thaw in earnest. A reunion isn't far away. In fact, the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre nearly connected last year. At the team's annual Tailgate Tour, team president Mark Murphy said the Packers wanted to bring Favre back for a game last season. One problem. Favre's high school coaching got in the way. "We do have ongoing communications with him, and I think relations are good," Murphy said Tuesday. "We're hopeful to have him come back soon. We wanted to have him come back to a game last year, (but) his team kept winning and winning, so it kind of made it tough to find a time where it worked." Favre was the offensive coordinator at Oak Grove High School last fall, helping that team win a Mississippi state title.

07:26 AM ET 04.16 | Inside a month from one of the biggest days of his life, Derek Carr enters the event with more than a little confidence. [Carr] said he "absolutely" is the best quarterback in this draft. He made his proclamation on Tuesday's edition of "NFL AM" on NFL Network. Then again, which player isn't going to say he's the best available at his position? But Carr seemed quite comfortable with his claim, saying, "We can turn the tape on and watch it." Carr had a great 2013 season, but the season ended poorly with what was his worst performance in his final two years with the Bulldogs. Carr threw for 5,083 yards and 50 TDs in '13 -- both figures led the FBS ranks by a large margin -- but he managed to throw for just 217 yards, two TDs and an interception in a humbling 45-20 loss to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl.

New offense, same role for Bush

07:25 AM ET 04.16 | The Lions, comfortable with a split decision this past season, have another on their minds. Reggie Bush and Joique Bell split time on offense last year, with Bush playing 54 percent of the Lions' offensive snaps and Bell playing 49 percent of the time. New offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said he expects a similar split in workload this fall. "I think they both have their specific role and again, I'm familiar with them but it's been a few years since I've been with Reggie," Lombardi said Monday at a town hall meeting for season ticket holders. ... "But this game is a violent game anymore and it's hard for one running back to get all the carries. So much like they did last year, I see these guys kind of having a split role and both being very productive."

07:45 AM ET 04.15 | Sidney Rice, back in the Carolinas? [If Rice] wants a homecoming, he might have to take the hometown discount. A free-agent wide receiver from Gaffney, S.C., and most recently with the Seahawks, Rice has been cleared to resume football activities following an ACL tear. He has drawn interest from multiple teams including the Panthers, according to two league sources. But there are several hurdles that stand between the former Gamecocks receiver and the Panthers, and as of early Monday evening, no visit between the two had been scheduled. Along with the Panthers, the Giants, Saints and Seahawks also are interested, according to Pro Football Talk. Rice, 27, has a history of injuries and would have to pass a team's physical before signing.
